Space Quest Trivia Questions

1. In the original "Space Quest 1", when the scientist gets shot, what is the last thing he says?

From Quiz
"Space Quest 1" Original and Remake

Answer: Astral bodies

In the original "Space Quest 1," in the cartridge room, a scientist will walk in the room and get shot to death as soon as he enters the room. He warns Roger that he better get off the ship ASAP. He then points to the cartridges and says "Astral Bodies" in his dying breath. Roger then gets that cartridge, and takes it to Xenon, where his people will use it to create another Star Generator to replace the ones that the Sariens stole and that Roger blew up. Before the end of the game, he finds a computer and inserts the cartridge there and learns some useful information from it, including a password that'll be important later. If Roger doesn't take the cartridge from the Arcada, or he leaves it at one of the computers, he will be told that he forgot it, but "That's okay. You're only a janitor." In the remake, what the scientist says varies from playthrough to playthrough. You have to look in the manual and enter the code for whatever he says to get the cartridge. He could say "Astral Bodies." He could say one of the three wrong answers. Or he could say something else.

2. At the beginning of the game there are several creatures roaming the streets of Xenon. Which ones can kill Roger?

From Quiz Space Quest 4: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers

Answer: Zombie and Security Droid

The security droid will vaporize Roger if it sees him or if it's alerted. The zombie, if he spots Roger, will scream and alert the security droid who then promptly comes and vaporizes him. The energizer bunny is no threat at all. Roger captures the bunny with a rope, and then he takes out the battery and installs it in his PocketPal computer.

3. After landing on the moon of the volcanic planet, what did Wilco use to hide himself?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon" Pt. 2

Answer: he used the cloaking belt

After landing on the moon of Pestulon, Wilco put on Arnoid's belt and activated the cloaking device. He was able to enter the ScumSoft complex by being invisible. Once he descended the stairs leading into the complex, the battery pack on the belt gave out. Wilco was vulnerable for getting caught.

4. Where did Wilco's escape pod end up?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon"

Answer: on a garbage scow

In "Space Quest II", Wilco launched himself from Vohaul's burning asteroid fortress just in time. However, his troubles weren't over yet. The pod from which he escaped had low oxygen. Wilco climbed inside a sleep chamber. Over an undetermined amount of time, Wilco's pod was picked up by a robot controlled garbage scow. When the pod entered the freighter, it was set down with a thud which caused the pod's "Revive Mode" to be enabled. Wilco awoke, left the pod, and started to find his way off the freighter in another mode of transportation.

5. As the game began, what was Wilco sweeping the deck of?

From Quiz "Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge"

Answer: orbital station

At the beginning of the game, Wilco was sweeping the deck outside of Xenon Orbital Station 4. All of the sudden, his alarm on his wrist watch went off for a message from his boss. Apparently, a passenger got space-sick on the way into the station and Wilco was sent to go clean it up.

6. At the beginning of the game, where was Wilco hiding?

From Quiz "Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter"

Answer: Janitor's closet

Wilco was sleeping in the janitor's closet of the space ship named the Arcada. When the alarm for general quarters sounded, he had to hurry off the ship before it exploded.

7. In the original "Space Quest 1", if Roger presses the "Do Not Press" button, where does he go?

From Quiz "Space Quest 1" Original and Remake

Answer: Daventry

In the original "Space Quest 1", if Roger pressed the "Do not press" button, his ship goes to the "King's Quest" realm and crashed into the moat in front of Castle Daventry. Roberta Williams, the designer of the "King's Quest" series, wakes up and says "Ken, what was that?" Ken tells her that it was just some "Space Quest" player who hit the "Do Not Press" button and tells Roberta to go back to sleep. In the remake, Roger crashes into Nottingham, just outside the pub. This is a plug for the Robin Hood-themed game "Conquests of the Longbow".

8. Can you get killed using the smell and taste icons?

From Quiz "Space Quest 2": Original and Infamous Adventures

Answer: The taste icon can kill you but not the smell icon

At the end of the remake, there is an "Abort Self Destruct" button. Unfortunately for Roger, this button is stuck. The game says that it cannot be pressed until it is lubricated. Roger can try to lubricate the button with his tongue, but that will electrocute him. The narrator then gives you a false hint saying you should have searched the bathroom more closely. This got me stuck because I played the remake before I played the original, so I would restore to a point where I was in the bathroom and try to find what I missed there. Those who played the original game first know that is not the puzzle. The puzzle is to get into the escape pod before the robot gets you.

9. Much of this game was created by Josh Mandel, who is no stranger to adventure games. In addition to co-creating "Space Quest 6," Josh Mandel was the voice of what popular adventure game character?

From Quiz Space Quest 6: The Spinal Frontier

Answer: King Graham, from the "King's Quest" series

Josh Mandel does the voice of King Graham in "King's Quest 5", "King's Quest 6," and AGD Interactive's remake of the first three games in that series. He also voices the giant pig that runs the Monolith Burger in "Space Quest 4."

10. What does not exist in "Space Quest 5"?

From Quiz Space Quest 5: The Next Mutation

Answer: Voice acting

Even though "Space Quest 4" had a voice pack, "Space Quest 5" does not. The voice pack returned in "Space Quest 6".

11. Who is the narrator for this game?

From Quiz Space Quest 4: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers

Answer: Gary Owens

Owens also narrates "Space Quest 6." John Rhys-Davies narrates "Quest For Glory 4," Art Lewicki narrates "King's Quest 5," and Bill Ratner narrates "King's Quest 6."

12. What did the people that Wilco was sent to save call themselves?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon" Pt. 2

Answer: Two Guys from Andromeda

The Two Guys from Andromeda were known for coming up with cool ideas for computer games. However, they were being held captive by ScumSoft CEO Elmo Pug and was forced to come up with more stupid and quirky games and programs. Wilco tracked them down after getting a hidden coded distress message in the "Astro Chicken" game. Wilco played this game at the Monolith Burger when he stopped off for a quick bite to eat.

13. What was the name of Wilco's ship that he foundhe and repaired?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon"

Answer: Aluminum Mallard

As Wilco explored this trash heap, he found the Aluminum Mallard. This was his way off but he had to find things to get it going again. He found a warp motivator, wire, and reactor. A rat that was on board stole the reactor and wire from Wilco, but Wilco was determined to not let a rat get to him. He got it back and wired up his new found ship. He then fired his weapons at the side of the freighter. This action caused the sudden change in pressure to suck him out of the freighter. Wilco was free in space again.

14. How did Wilco get to the hatch above him?

From Quiz "Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge"

Answer: just walked to it

Since Wilco was outside in outer space, all he had to do was just walk to the hatch that was located above him. However, if he drifted too far away from the deck he lost his gravitational hold of the station and floated away. When he reached the hatch, the hatch automatically opened up and threw him inside the station.

15. What was Wilco's occupation?

From Quiz "Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter"

Answer: Janitor

It was later found out that Wilco was a space janitor. He loved cleaning up any mess he found. Most of the time he found himself in a mess of his own but he always managed to save his planet from certain doom.

16. What is in the control room of the Arcada in the remake that is not in the original?

From Quiz "Space Quest 1" Original and Remake

Answer: Magnet

In the remake, there is a magnet in the control room that can be used to rig the deadly slot machines, so that Roger always wins money from them and never gets killed. This doesn't exist in the original game. There is a way to rig the slot machines in the original game, but I can't mention it here.

17. Can Roger get his mop back in the remake?

From Quiz "Space Quest 2": Original and Infamous Adventures

Answer: Yes, but he will die

If Roger walks off the ship in the direction his mop went, he will float to his death. However, the death message in the remake says that if it's any consolation, you found your mop! You will both drift in space together forever. The original game does not specify that. "No and he doesn't need it" would be the correct answer if the question specified that you had to be trying to win.

18. What voice actor makes a return in this game?

From Quiz Space Quest 6: The Spinal Frontier

Answer: Gary Owens

Gary Owens returns as the narrator after being absent from "Space Quest 5." Strangely, Roger is portrayed by a different voice actor in "Space Quest 6" than in "Space Quest 4." Stuart Moulder and Kelli Spurgeon voiced Roger Jr. and Zondra, one of the Latex Babes of Estros. Neither appear in this game.

19. What does Roger do to pass the "StarCon Aptitude Test"?

From Quiz Space Quest 5: The Next Mutation

Answer: cheat

"Space Quest" can really give people some bad ideas of how to get by in life considering how much Roger cheats. In "Space Quest 1," Roger uses a magnet to rig a slot machine and eventually destroys the machine without paying for the damages. In "Space Quest 2," Roger orders a whistle via mail and does not pay for it. Now, "Space Quest 5" makes you solve a puzzle by cheating on a test! Cheating will again be encouraged in "Space Quest 6," in which Roger cheats at an arcade game to win a 300-buckazoid bet.

20. What did Wilco use as a disguise to get around ScumSoft?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon" Pt. 2

Answer: janitor

As Wilco walked the circular hallway of ScumSoft, he found a closet to his left (or right depending on which way he walked). Aha! Wilco found a janitor's closet. He found a pair of coveralls and a vaporizer. He always wanted a trash vaporizer. He went into the main offices of ScumSoft and made sure that he hit every single trash can. If he walked past one, security would get called.

21. What was the name of the purplish, sandy planet?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon"

Answer: Phleebhut

As Wilco was scanning the galaxy map for a place to go, he found a purplish planet called Phleebhut. Phleebhut was mainly another desert planet. (Remember the planet Korona in "Space Quest I"). Like all of our hero's adventures, this planet had a few dangers in it, too. If he traveled too far south, a snake would eat him up. Occasionally, a scorpion would be in the screen and bite him and kill him. He was startled, at first, to see a monster on the horizon. On further inspection, he found it was the World O'Wonders store and attraction. The monster's head was actually an observation deck but was closed for repairs at the time. There was also a dangerous lightning storm on the horizon.

22. What does Wilco pick up from outside the pod after he crashes on Korona?

From Quiz "Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter"

Answer: Glass

After Wilco escaped the destructing ship, he crash-landed on the planet Korona. It was a planet that sustained life, but was mostly desert. After emerging from the pod, he found a piece of glass which was used to burn out some destructive laser beams in an underground cavern.

23. In the original "Space Quest 1" you can just walk by the grate monster if you are careful enough. What do you need to do with the monster in the remake?

From Quiz "Space Quest 1" Original and Remake

Answer: Feed it a sticky plant

You feed the monster a sticky plant and it tries to eat the sticky plant, but its mouths get permanently stuck to the plant. After you do this, passing the monster is easy. Before doing this, passing the monster is impossible in the remake.

24. What is Vohaul's revenge?

From Quiz "Space Quest 2": Original and Infamous Adventures

Answer: Infesting Xenon with life-insurance salesmen

This is not a difference between the two versions of this game. I just love this revenge plot so much I had to ask a question about it. This kind of humor is what makes "Space Quest" different from other games.

25. In the introduction, Roger is convicted of many crimes and as a result is stripped of his captaincy. What is one of the crimes?

From Quiz Space Quest 6: The Spinal Frontier

Answer: Consorting with a female of higher rank

Roger is convicted of many ridiculous crimes, yet not even charged with blowing up the space bar or the Eureka. In fact, the game says that he somehow successfully returned the Eureka, even though he blew it up! It seems Scott Murphy did not play "Space Quest 5" enough.

26. What character, introduced at the end of "Space Quest 4," does Roger meet in "Space Quest 5?"

From Quiz Space Quest 5: The Next Mutation

Answer: Beatrice

After defeating Vohaul and saving his son in "Space Quest 4," Roger meets his son, Roger Jr., who tells Roger everything about what was going on and how Roger got there to that time period. He also introduces Roger to his wife, Beatrice. Roger Jr. is not the answer to this question because he does not appear in "Space Quest 5." The other two weren't in "Space Quest 4".

27. The Latex Babes of Estros nearly shave off Roger's legs. Then a creature scares them off, saving Roger from that fate but then putting him in danger of being eaten. What is this creature?

From Quiz Space Quest 4: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers

Answer: Sea Slug

The Latex Babes transported Roger through a body of water to their torture place. They sealed him to a chair and nearly shaved his legs off when a hungry Estronian sea slug rose up above water and scared him off. This creature removed the chains that bound Roger to the chair, but then it grabbed Roger and nearly ate him. Roger put an explosive device in its mouth and killed the creature. After this, the Latex Babes decided not to torture him after all. Instead, they escort him to the mall. Once they get to the mall they run off and leave Roger. Strangely, one of them leaves her ATM card behind.

28. Someone had followed Wilco to this planet. Who was it?

From Quiz "Space Quest III: Pirates of Pestulon"

Answer: Arnoid the Annihilator

Before Wilco entered the planet of Phleebhut, another ship decloaked. This was Arnoid the Annihilator. Arnoid is a bill collector and Wilco owed him money. It was for the Labian Terror Beast whistle which he had gotten in "Space Quest II". Arnoid followed him to Phleebhut and, using his cloaking belt, approached Wilco outside of World O'Wonders. He explained that he had better pay up. He also gave Wilco a chance to get a head start on him and that he might be generous enough to let him pass if Wilco got back to his ship before Arnoid did.

29. What did Wilco get inside the pod?

From Quiz "Space Quest I: The Sarien Encounter"

Answer: Emergency kit

Before he exited the pod, he grabbed the emergency kit which fell during the crash. Inside it, he found bottled water and a knife. He used the knife to pry open a vent on the Sarien vessel. He used the water to kill a pork beast.

30. How do you get past the root monster in the remake?

From Quiz "Space Quest 2": Original and Infamous Adventures

Answer: Feed it a dead rabbit with an explosive attached to it

Arguably the hardest puzzle in the original game was greatly simplified in the remake. In the remake, you go to the mushroom screen. You will see a green rabbit hop to the west. Go back west and the rabbit will hop into the concealed deadly pit. Reach into the pit and get the rabbit. Then, get the unstable ordinance from the wrecked plane. Unlike "Space Quest 4," you actually need the unstable ordinance this time. Then, attach it to the rabbit. Lastly, feed it to the root monster. The root monster will eat it and then it will blow up. When I played the original game, I had a really difficult time with this puzzle. The most difficult part was learning that this puzzle is not the same as in the remake. Then I had to learn what to do here. Ironically, the hint that helped me solve it in the original was in the remake. In the remake, after you kill the root monster, the narrator says "And you thought you'd have to navigate the maze-like vines." The puzzle made more sense in the remake. It gives purpose to the mushroom screen and the pit (what was the point of those things in the original? Funny deaths?). It feels like a classic "Space Quest" puzzle in the remake. In the original it's more like a "King's Quest" puzzle. It's usually "King's Quest" that has these things where you need to move very carefully.
