Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a Fighter, you will rely on your brute force and combat skills to get through the game. Although it can be acquired by other characters for a high price during character creation, which skill is unique to fighters?

Answer: Parry

Fighters are the only ones who can effectively parry an attack. Other character types must either rely on dodging, or buy up the parry skill using valuable character points. On the greater scale of things, there isn't much of a difference between parrying and dodging.

The throwing skill is shared by fighters and thieves. However, fighters will have little use for this in most games in the series.
2. Which of these items may only be carried by a fighter?

Answer: Sword and Shield

Fighters are the only ones able to wield a sword, and as such will benefit from greater combat damage, even before their great strength is figured into the equation. In addition, they have a shield that can block blows. Thus fighters usually cut-to-the-chase quite literally, and don't often have to worry about complex solutions to the problems they face.

While fighters will always have a suit of chainmail when they start the game, it may be purchased by anyone, or you could've brought it with you from Spielburg. It is very protective, but also very heavy. A fighter will easily have the ample strength to wear one, so please don't drop yours!
3. There are two new skills added to the game which involve the challenge of achieving the status of Paladin. One of these skills is shown on your character sheet, the other is hidden.

Answer: True

Actually, three new skills are added at the start of the game - Communication, Honor, and Paladin. The first two are shown on your character sheet, while the third one is hidden. While anyone can attempt to become a Paladin, it is much more important for fighters than for other character classes. This is because fighters are not very versatile and may find some situations to be difficult without a Paladin's holy powers - which makes paladins much more powerful than fighters overall anyway.

You will need to have sufficiently high levels of Paladin and Honor points by the end of the game in order to attain Paladin status. You'll gain them at about the same rate, but the biggest difference is that Paladin point can go down due to dishonorable actions...
4. As a fighter, there are no less than three important items you should buy at the weaponsmith's shop.

Answer: False

The weaponsmith sells only three items, and one of these is a suit of chainmail which you already have. However, you can buy a fine broadsword here, which will further increase the damage you inflict in combat. A must-have item.

Additionally, you could purchase a few throwing daggers. This could help make life easier for you once plunged into combat.
5. After listening to Omar read poetry at the Fountain Plaza, you may return to find that he has dropped a purse of some kind. What does the purse contain?

Answer: It doesn't matter - you should return it

This should be a no-brainer: As fighters are the most likely candidates to become Paladins (through sheer necessity, if nothing else), you should not pass that opportunity up, which means you should not keep the purse! Return it to Omar the next time you see him for extra Honor and Paladin points. Fail to return the purse, and you forfeit all chances for Paladinhood.
6. What reward will you win for beating the weaponsmith at arm-wrestling?

Answer: Issur's respect

This is a bit of a trick question, because Issur doesn't actually give you anything for defeating him. Once you've beaten him, you'd have to ask for the bellows at the right time if you wish to acquire them (the fine metal shield does not exist). If your fighter has magical skills, he might be able to get the bellows without arm-wrestling Issur at all. But then again, you're as strong as an ox, so just go for it.

The bellows will also assist you in capturing the Air Elemental. Arm-wrestling is tough, and requires that you have a high Strength score. Don't forget, you'll actually have to ask for the bellows at the proper time.
7. When an Earth Elemental begins tearing up the city streets, you will need the help of fire to defeat him. Which of these characters will give you a flaming sword?

Answer: Rakeesh the Liontaur

Rakeesh is a Paladin, and his magical sword is called Soul-Forge. It will burst into flame when you go up against the Earth Elemental, allowing you to damage the beast. This is still one of the toughest battles in the game, and you had better find an item to contain the Earth Elemental once it's been defeated.
8. You will have four days to return the sword to its owner after you're done with it. After that, you will begin to lose Paladin Points.

Answer: False

Actually, if you don't return the sword promptly (on the day you receive it, or early the next day), you'll forfeit the chance to become a Paladin. Remember, we're playing for Paladin Status, so we're going to have to return it to its rightful owner, the Paladin Rakeesh.

It doesn't have any value to you anyway, because Rakeesh alone decides whether the sword bursts into flame or not. Don't drag your feet; return it as soon as you're done with the Earth Elemental.
9. For a fighter, the easiest way to get a Griffin Feather is to fight the Griffin. However, this will be detrimental in your attempts to become a Paladin.

Answer: False

Another tricky question: You really don't have to fight it at all. There's a Griffin Feather lying under a rock near the Griffin's nest. As a fighter, you're probably the only one strong enough to move that rock and reclaim the feather. It's even easier than other character classes have it. Additionally, if you ever disturb the Griffin, you will lose any chance to become a Paladin, unless you're playing the VGA remake (and even then, it will hurt your efforts).

Oh and watch out - the Griffin is an extremely dangerous enemy! You're best off not disturbing it at all, Paladin or not!
10. Which organization does Issur the Weaponsmith belong to?

Answer: EOF

EOF stands for "Eternal Order of Fighters". It seems that fighters want to set up their own guild to rival the Thieves' Guild and Wizards' Institute of Technocery. As a fighter, you'll be initiated into the EOF near the middle of the game.
11. You'll be captured and put through a dangerous initiation ceremony. Your weapon taken away, you'll be chained to the wall while an armed warrior approaches to kill you. Even if you manage to escape your bonds, what can you do to avoid death?

Answer: Dive for a weapon across the other side of the room

The EOF want you to prove your worth in combat. You can't do much against a man armed with a sword, and there's a perfectly good sword lying around. You'll have to dodge a couple of quick blows first though.
12. During the game, you will have two separate chances to spare an unarmed opponent.

Answer: True

One of these chances is during the EOF initiation. The other is much later in the game. If you're going to go for Paladinhood, you'd better spare those men! In fact, if you don't, you're forfeiting any chance of becoming a Paladin.
13. After your stay in Raseir you'll be taken to the ancient ruins. For the fighter, this area is considerably more difficult than for any other character type.

Answer: False

The ruined city is not terribly difficult for anyone, although you will need to be healed up if you want to survive. Still, fighters are the healthiest of the lot, so you shouldn't have any problem getting through alive.
14. Your last battle in the game will pit you against a solid stone statue. There is only one combat action that will help you in this situation. Which is it?

Answer: Escape

Yeah, the toughest battle in the game is one you'll have to escape! Even if it was humanly possible to defeat the statue, time is limited and you must disrupt the evil summoning ceremony before it's too late. Immediately after escaping from combat, push over the candle closest to you. If you fail to do that, push down some other candle, quickly! After that, you'll just need to remember Ad Avis' weakness - FIRE.
15. If all goes well, you will be granted Paladinhood at the end of this game. Aside from acting righteously and honestly, you will also have to gather a certain number of honor points. You will need to have no less than 75 to qualify for paladin status, but how many points do you have at the start of the game?

Answer: 50

50 points of honor are your reward for having saved Spielburg (in "Quest for Glory 1"), apparently. You'll need to gather at least 25 honor points more, and also 25 Paladin points. If you keep your hands clean of immoral activities, show mercy and respect (even to your opponents), and are generous to the needy, you should have no problem acquiring enough points. If your honor score is not above 75 by the time you leave Shapeir, it's quite possible that you've already missed your chance.
