"Quest For Glory 2" Original and AGDI Quiz

The AGD Interactive version of "Quest For Glory 2" is what made me a huge fan of what is now my all-time favorite series of adventure games. They didn't change the story like they did with the 2nd and 3rd "King's Quest," but they made changes.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Quest For Glory" had all of its games done in VGA style graphics befoe "King's Quest" or "Space Quest."

Answer: True

In the "Quest For Glory" series, only the first two games were EGA text parser games to begin with. Sierra remade the first game in 1991, and AGD Interactive released this remake in 2008. The "Space Quest 2" remake came out in 2011. If there are any remakes of "King's Quest 4" or "Space Quest 3" by the time you play this quiz, they came out after AGDI's "Quest For Glory 2."

In the "Quest For Glory 2" remake you can use the text parser if you want to, but you don't have to. There is also an option for a hybrid of text parser and point-and-click interface. If that option is selected, most of the game will be played using the latter function, but there are some hidden conversations and a couple of funny hidden deaths that can only be found via the text parser.
2. In the remake, if you ask Shameen about the money changer, what happens?

Answer: The game displays English translations for the street names

If you ask Shameen about the moneychanger, the street names will still be displayed in Arabic, but right below that will be the English translations in parentheses. It's convenient for those of us who aren't fluent in Arabic.
3. In the remake, when you're walking down "Junub Tarik" and you come to the intersection with "Sharki Darb," you will sometimes see a character that also appears in the remake of what game?

Answer: King's Quest 2

"Sharki Darb" means "East Avenue" in Arabic. However, AGD Interactive took the name "Sharki" and created a group of fictional, shark-like people from that name. These people appear primarily in the "King's Quest 2" remake, but if silly clowns is turned on there is an easter egg in which you can sometimes see one swimming down "Sharki Darb." Quite clever and funny if you ask me.
4. In the original game, in WIT Erana looks like whom?

Answer: Genesta

Erana was originally supposed to be, and look like, The "Quest For Glory" equivalent of Genesta from "King's Quest 4." Interestingly, looking at the portrait of Erana in the original game reveals that the hero actually met Genesta. However, Erana's appearance varied in future games. AGD Interactive based their portrait of Erana on "Quest For Glory 4." Perhaps Genesta would look like that if she ever appeared in any VGA "King's Quest" games.
5. In the remake, in WIT who can you choose as your sponsor that you couldn't choose in the original version (although making this choice will get you killed)?

Answer: Katrina

In WIT, there is a portrait that is entirely black and is not a portrait of a person. This is Katrina, Ad Avis's dark master who was expelled from WIT for trying to summon powerful dark creatures into Gloriana. The original version of this game does not say this, as the Coles did not want you to know that yet.

The remake came out after all the games had been out for years, so there was no reason for AGD Interactive to hide it. If you choose Katrina as your sponsor, the wizards will scold you and tell you about her, and then they'll ask if you abide by your decision. If you say "yes," they teleport you to Mordavia so that you an seek her yourself.

Unfortunately, they teleport you to a little island in the middle of the swamp. If you're a wizard, "Quest For Glory 4" makes you use the Glide spell to get through the swamp. Since you don't have that yet, you're stuck and the game ends.
6. In the remake, what can be found in the southwestern part of town that wasn't in the original game?

Answer: Saurus Repair Shop

This is an Easter egg that was supposed to be in the original game, but was cut because there wasn't enough disc space. You can't actually do anything here, it's just for laughs and it has pretty good music.
7. In the remake, in the Guild Hall, you can bring to Uhura the severed head of what creature?

Answer: Ghoul

After you ask Uhura about Terrorsaurus, she will tell you that a Terrorsaurus tried to invade Shapeir a few weeks ago, but Rakeesh killed it and now its head is on the wall. After you see this message, you can kill a Ghoul, and if its head becomes disconnected from the rest of its body, you can bring it to Uhura.

Then, the next time you enter the Guild Hall, the ghoul's head will be on the wall and the plaque will read "Ghoul slain by (insert hero name here)."
8. What extra item can the thief steal from the metalworker's house in the remake?

Answer: Dagger

There is a container in the remake that if you search it enough times, you will find a dagger. It's not an ordinary dagger though, so you can't fight with it or throw it at anyone. It's a fine dagger. All you can do with it is sell it to Dinarzad. Or you can show it to the guard who lives at that house and get yourself killed.
9. In the remake, there is a break-in that wasn't in the original game. Where can you find this?

Answer: Near WIT

On the same screen as WIT, there is a house that thief can break into on day 13 or day 14. There are several things that can be stolen from there. You better be careful though when you steal the pouch. There are four dinars in there that you won't be able to take with you.

This is the hardest break-in in the entire series, and sadly you get no points for doing it. Apparently AGD Interactive wanted to keep the score at 500 and they didn't want to take away any points for anything. The music for this break-in is very cool.
10. If you read the graffiti, you can sometimes find a brigand in town. Who is this?

Answer: Sweeping Sir James

There is a lot of graffiti on the walls in the remake. You can get many messages by just reading graffiti. Sometimes if you read the same graffiti twice you get a different message (not sure how that works). Some of these messages are jokes, but four of them pertain to Sweeping Sir James. If you read one of his messages, the street mentioned in the graffiti will be activated.

The next time you go to that street, if you're at the correct intersection, you will run into a brigand. This brigand sometimes fights like a normal brigand and sometimes he fights only with magic. Keep hitting him until his health is down to one point and he will run off.

Then you have to find him somewhere else. You have to defeat him at all four streets to kill him. One of the fights must be done at night while the others are during the day.

The last fight will be the toughest as he will use a sword, daggers, and magic. If you kill them, you get his booklet in which you keep track of all the monsters you've defeated, how many of them you have defeated, the strengths and weaknesses of those monsters, and how many times you defeated Uhura in the guild Hall.
11. If you read a message that says "The doom from the east has passed and is now between here and infinity," what will you be able to find?

Answer: Pizza Elemental

This Easter egg is a nod to the scientists in future games who say that pizza is the most important element in the universe. After you beat the fire elemental, you can read the message mentioned in the question. Then, you can go to the EOF. Outside the EOF there will be a pizza box. Click on it twice and you'll pick it up. Then, go to the desert. Go south until the screen flips, then go forty screens west. You will find the toughest creature in the entire series. However, it can be defeated and boy, do you get a sense of accomplishment when you defeat that thing!

There is a genie in this game but it's not Shamir.
12. The remake has the "suck blue frog" option.

Answer: False

This cheat exists in the remake, but it's not as easy as typing "suck blue frog." You have to earn it. First, you have to go to the oasis and use the bellows to get the frog. Then, you have to beat the game with a perfect score to unlock the cheat. Then, the next time you play, you'll hear a "Ribbit" when you start the game and you'll be able to use the cheat and you won't have to type "suck blue frog". Also, you have to get the frog before you get the air elemental. If you try to capture the frog with bellows full of air elemental, it won't work.
13. In the remake, you can do a certain dishonorable action and still become a Paladin. It was not possible to do this in the original game and still become a Paladin. What is this dishonorable action?

Answer: Disturb the Griffin

In the original Quest For Glory 2, disturbing the Griffin cost you 10 paladin Points. The maximum paladin points you can get is 34, and you need 25 to become a paladin. Therefore, if you disturb the Griffin, the maximum paladin points you can is 24, which is not enough. According to Lori Ann Cole, disturbing the Griffin was not intended to be an automatic disqualifier from becoming a paladin, she just didn't pay close enough attention to this.

She said that if she ever remade this game, she would reduce the penalty for disturbing the Griffin to five points. AGD Interactive made good on this promise.

In fact, I have become a paladin and disturbed the Griffin in the same game. I did this before I ever knew it was a bad idea to disturb the Griffin.
14. In the remake, both of the magicians in town have minigames that you can play. What is the name of Keapon Laffin's minigame?

Answer: Force Bolt Flurry

Keapon Laffin just loves that Force Bolt spell. Force Bolt Flurry is a REALLY hard game. But if you win, you get an improved Force Bolt spell. If you win twice, he gives you a fan that can decorate your room. All ensuing times he refills your mana. This is also a great way to build up your magic skill as well as your skill in in force bolt without having to go into the desert and risk death, so this game is worthwhile.
15. What is the name of Aziza's minigame?

Answer: Wizard's Whirl

The name "Wizard's Whirl" is a nod to something Erasmus mentions in "Quest For Glory 5." If you visit him in that game, he will tell you that he and Fenrus just finished a game of Wizard's Whirl. Fenrus says that Erasmus was losing, so he blew up the game, which Erasmus admits to be true. AGD Interactive made this game real so we can play it with the beautiful Aziza! You have to be a certified wizard to play this game. In other words, you have to pass WIT before Aziza will play this game with you. If you win this game, she makes you flame dart spell A LOT stronger. Subsequent victories get her to refill your magic. In addition, you can boost your magic skill and skill in a number of spells by playing this game, so it's definitely worth your time.

Having played the remake first, I was shocked to learn that these games did not exist in the original version. Okay, "Force Bolt Flurry" is no big loss, but I REALLY missed "Wizard's Whirl." That game is one of the highlights of the entire series IMO.
16. In the remake, each monster has its own battle theme and there is pre-battle music.

Answer: True

In the Sierra versions of the first two games, all monsters had the same battle theme and there was no pre-battle music. Unique battle themes and pre-battle themes didn't begin until "Quest For Glory 3". AGD Interactive kept with this idea and put in some new battle themes in their game.

The Scorpion and Terrorsaurus have unique battle themes. Personally, I LOVE the scorpion battle theme; it might be my favorite music in the entire series. The rest of the monsters in general have the basic battle theme, but each monster has a different variation of the basic battle theme.
17. In the remake, who can you sometimes see going down the waterfall in the Forbidden City?

Answer: Alexander

Sometimes in the remake the hero will see Alexander from "King's Quest" going down the waterfall instead of a log. The hero can neither save him nor jump on him and then jump to the other side. In this game this is just an Easter egg you sometimes see. How this happens is in "King's Quest 3," if you incorrectly solve a certain puzzle in that game (also new to the AGD Interactive remake). AGD Interactive worked on their remake of "King's Quest 3" at the same time they did their remake of this game, so that is why there is a scene that can appear in both games.

Graham can also appear as in Easter egg in this game. If the hero is completely out of water, he will sometimes see a mirage of Graham, collapsed and dead or dying. This is presumably a reference to "King's Quest 5", in which Graham must venture into the desert west of Serenia and he can possibly die.

I do not believe Roger or Sonny appear in any AGD Interactive games. However, Graham can travel to either one of their universes via the Door of Destiny in Kolyma if he no longer wants to save Valanice. The game will end if he does this but it's still another interesting Easter egg courtesy of AGD Interactive.
18. What can you do in combat in Raseir in the remake that you can't do in the original game?

Answer: Fight with a saurus

The Saurus you bought from Groucho Marx is the enchanted Emir of Raseir. Aziza keeps him at her place for safekeeping while you go to Raseir. Therefore the saurus who takes you there is a gift from the sultan. Unlike the emir, the gift from the sultan is not a coward and will fight for you. Fighting with the saurus is a lot of fun, and if you get hit, the saurus initially takes damage not you. If your saurus gets hit too many times, he'll throw you off. But you'll be able to remount him. Saurus combat is a lot of fun, and it's the only way to pass time on your first day in Raseir.

You can never kill opponents instantly. You can always escape combat or fight a terrorsaurus.
19. In the remake, if you're a thief, who chases you on the rope as you walk to the ritual chamber?

Answer: Khaveen

In the original game, the thief does not deal with Khaveen at all. I guess Khaveen was supposed to be like the Kobold in the first game: a villain who the fighter and magic user need to kill, but that the thief doesn't kill. AGD Interactive didn't like that idea, and this made it so you had to get him killed to win. Khaveen crosses the rope hand over hand with a sword in his hand thousands of feet above the ground.

As if that's not crazy enough, he can knock the hero off the rope without losing his own balance. How he accomplishes all of this I do not know. Fortunately, the rope runs out of magical power right when the hero makes it to the ritual chamber, so Khaveen falls to his death.
20. What character class has two endings in the remake?

Answer: Thief

In addition to the usual thief ending, in the remake a thief can go through the castle doors just like the other classes. There, the thief will see Khaveen walking around. He will not be able to fight Khaveen because he does not have a sword. However, Khaveen will get close to the balcony many times.

When he does, the hero jumps down on top of him and stabs him to death with a dagger. He completes the rest of the ending the fighter way. This ending gives less points than the usual ending, but this ending is a good idea if you don't like tightrope walking or long cut scenes with women or if your agility is too low. You have to use the alternate ending if you are running too low on daggers and rocks. Either way, Khaveen must be killed if you are a thief in the remake. Khaveen's best possible fate in the remake is being turned into a snake (magic user).
