Shine 2017: "Super Smash Bros 4" Major Quiz

Massachusetts' own "Shine 2017"-- an S-tier Major tournament; one that I had the pleasure of attending and one that was an event for the ages. Questions in this quiz pertain to the part of the event containing "Super Smash Bros 4" for Wii U.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Considered one of the best Falco players in the world, Atari had actually been using Ness throughout his run in doubles. Atari and his partner would ultimately make it on stream, but Atari pulled a very curious move as the duo won Game 1, and upon doing so, Atari was prompted to bring out his Falco for all on stream to watch! What ultimately happened?

Answer: They lost Game 2 and ultimately lost the set

This interesting decision would bring about Atari's ultimate end, as he truly got beaten very very badly with his supposed world class Falco. He would switch back to Ness in Game 3, but it would prove to be too late, as his disappointing performance in Game 2 sealed his fate.
2. An interesting fact was discovered at this tournament in a doubles set. Apparently, King Dedede's neutral B (Inhale) interacts with Cloud's Finishing Touch in a curious manner. What happens?

Answer: It lessens the knockback from Finishing Touch significantly

There is little in the manner of explanation as to why this happens, but the ability to do this is exclusive to King Dedede (Kirby can't do this with his own Inhale, nor can anyone else with a command grab do this). This was an extremely interesting thing to discover. For a long time now, Dedede has been thought to be amongst the worst choices for a Doubles character.

However, through this discovery, Dedede's prospects seem to certainly be on the rise, especially given that Cloud is universally accepted to be one of the best character to use in doubles.
3. What was the most commonly used character out of every event in the entire tournament?

Answer: Cloud

Cloud was borderline oppressive in Shine and was a very common sight indeed. The next most common characters in order were Bayonetta, Sheik, Lucina, and Mario. The most notable users of Cloud would be Tweek, who made it all the way to Singles Grand Finals, Komorikiri, and MK Leo, who won Doubles altogether.

It's not hard to see why either, as Cloud is widely regarded as one of the easiest characters to use effectively at a professional level.
4. While there was a character who was very clearly used the most in Shine, there was actually one character who received absolutely no uses whatsoever throughout the entirety of the tournament, as it pertains to official bracket play (excludes friendlies). Who was this character?

Answer: Ganondorf

While all four were rare sights, the King of Evil was the only one to get neglected entirely from use. Ganondorf saw use in friendlies that had no impact on the tournament, but once games started to count, people shied away from using Ganondorf entirely. It's not hard to see why, either, as Ganondorf is arguably one of the worst characters in the game.
5. Who would end up going on to win Shine Wii U Singles?

Answer: TSM ZeRo

ZeRo would ultimately defeat Tweek 3-1, despite dropping Game 1. It was a truly inspiring run by ZeRo, as he went through the entire tournament without losing a single set. In fact, he was near perfect throughout the tournament, losing only three total games.
6. An interesting and surprisingly effective strategy used by the player Marss in this tournament entailed him selecting Lucario as a character, and immediately killing himself at the start of the game, removing a stock from his character in doubles, while his partner, Zinoto, using Diddy Kong, did little other than run around the stage and attempt to distract and disrupt the opposing team. This strategy is not as spontaneous as it may seem, and does have a nickname. What is it?

Answer: Anubis

The infamous Anubis strategy was used consistently by the pair, and allowed them to make it all the way to second place in the entire 658 team bracket. Lucario's Aura has a mechanic to it where it becomes inherently easier to build up if Lucario falls behind a stock. By immediately killing himself and losing a stock at the beginning of the match, Marss' Lucario's Aura increases exponentially right off the bat due to the fact the other three players still have all three of their stocks. All Zinoto has to do here is hold on to his stock as long as possible. Because this mechanic works even if Lucario's partner has a stock advantage, as long as Zinoto survives with his third stock, Marss can build Aura and become a truly frightening presence in the fight.

This is made easier by the fact Zinoto mains Diddy Kong, a character with great mobility who can move around the stage very quickly. With Marss being impossible to ignore with his terrifying power, it quickly becomes very difficult for the opposing team to deal with both players; they either have to go to Marss and allow Zinoto to live, keeping Marss' power at its peak, or they have to go to Zinoto, and this becomes a bad idea because the slightest mishap can easily lead to Marss and Zinoto team comboing one player to an astonishingly early death.
7. Shine was truly an amazing tournament, but there was one blemish that is difficult for the common player to ignore. While it's impossible to blame the venue for this entirely, various brackets were disrupted heavily by one annoying occurrence in the tourney. What was it?

Answer: Disqualifications

Disqualifications happened at an alarming rate in this tournament, with a little less than half of singles brackets reporting at least one disqualification each, with plenty happening in doubles as well. I myself was forced to advance in a bracket off of a DQ, as it was an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise amazing tournament.
8. Who ultimately won Wii U doubles?

Answer: MK Leo and Komorikiri

MK Leo and Komorikiri ultimately defeated Tweek and Mistake in grand finals, all without dropping a single set. The heavily scrutinized Cloud duo came into full effect for our winners here, as they dispatched the Cloud + Bayonetta duo of Tweek and Mistake.
9. Who ultimately won the Crew battle event?

Answer: Ultimate Power

The Hitbox Arena crew came with some intimidating names and scary talent, but ultimately fell much shorter of winning the event than most would've imagined, placing in 9th place. Ultimate Power powered their way to a surprising victory, winning the event fairly dominantly. 25 Jumps, a crew based entirely around King Dedede, and being unique for doing so, lost in the first round to the Brent Lee crew.
10. Didn't do so well in Shine? Feeling bad about your performance and upset that you spent a lot of money to be there? Fret not! For those who did not do so well, Shine had a side bracket with a buy in, enough where the winner of this "amateur bracket" could win their money back and then some! What were the names of these brackets?

Answer: Lanes

Shine 2017 would be unique for being the first of its kind to actually stream Lanes. They had several Lanes, each with 64 people apiece. For those who did not advance to the Top 48 in the tournament, these Lanes were just what the doctor ordered, as an extension of the main tournament, for a small fee.
