Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first planet visited in "Star Fox 64" was a war-torn city, still under siege by Andross' forces. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Corneria

orneria was the fist level of "Star Fox 64". No matter which path you decided to take through the Lylat system, your journey started here.

Corneria was an easy level. It introduced your wingmen, and familiarized you with ship upgrades and the kinds of challenges you could expect to face.

Corneria had a pleasant, moderate climate, with greenery, mountains, lakes, and a nice city-scape, though the city was under siege by Andross' forces.

Corneria was where Peppy said his famous line, "Do a barrel roll!"
2. One of the possible third stages was a snowy world. There was a bomb planted in the local base, but before you could diffuse it, your old enemies, Star Wolf, showed up. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Fortuna

This planet's name is actually a translation error. The snowy planet was supposed to be called Fichina, while Fortuna, a separate planet in the Star Fox universe, was a more tropical location. Because Fichina was never seen in "Star Fox 64", there was not a whole lot of confusion.

This level (set on a planet that in this quiz will be known as "Fortuna") was entirely an all-range-mode planet. After taking out a few fighters initially, you were informed that there was a bomb set to go off at the base. However, before you could go and disarm it, Star Wolf showed up.

Star Wolf was a rival team to Star Fox, and was working for Andross. Andrew, one of the Star Wolf team members, was Andross' nephew.

After you were alerted to the bomb and Star Wolf showed up, you had only a limited amount of time to destroy all of Star Wolf. If you didn't, then Star Wolf flew away, and the base was destroyed. Not defeating Star Wolf meant you were be forced to travel to Sector X. If you did destroy Star Wolf, then you were given the option to travel to Solar, as well.
3. One of the possible fifth stages was set on a desert planet. You got to drive the Landmaster through Andross' forces in an attempt to save Slippy. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Titania

Titania was a terrifying war zone. It was loaded with enemies and minefields. You were also constrained to a Landmaster, the Star Fox crew's tank. The Landmaster could hover and roll around, but had limited manoeuvrability when compared to the Arwing.

If you went to Sector X, and did not defeat the boss fast enough, then Slippy would have been smacked down to Titania, and you would have been forced to mount a rescue mission. If you did beat the boss fast enough, you were given the option to go to either Macbeth or Titania (the two Landmaster levels). If you still chose to go to Titania, it would still be a rescue mission, even though Slippy was never hit.

Slippy analyzed the shield strength of any boss. Without Slippy, you did not have this meter. The boss on Titania was found holding Slippy's ship in a claw. If you shot the claw and released Slippy, he then provide a shield analysis.
4. One of the possible fourth stages took you through an extremely hot environment where you tracked down Andross' secret bioweapon. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Solar

Solar was the sun of the Lylat system (Also known as Lylat). Instead of being a real sun, full of plasma and intense radiation, Solar was presented as a sea of lava, with rolling waves and extremophile fauna.

The enemies on Solar included the local animals, as well as flying burning rocks. Your shields were constantly being damaged due to the heat, and health rings were abundant.

The boss on Solar was Andross' secret bioweapon. It was a fearsome creature that lived in the lava. It had claws, hurled burning rocks and fireballs at you, and created lava waves for you to dodge.
5. One of the possible second stages had you attack Andross' fleet of starships. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Sector Y

Sector Y was accessed from Corneria by flying through all the rocky archways along the lake.

The level Sector Y had fly through the broken remnants of the Cornerian fleet after an attack by Andross' own fleet. There were lots of enemies in Sector Y, including large cruisers with turrets and small ships. The smaller ships often grouped together, and taking out the groups could get you lots of bonus points to help get the medal.

Sector Y got its name from the large cloud of yellow gas in the shape of a Y. Going through Sector Y was the only way to get to Aquas, and then Zoness.
6. One of the possible fourth stages had you assault Andross' base to take out a secret weapon. If you didn't destroy it fast enough, Slippy was knocked out of the sky, and you had to go on a rescue mission. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Sector X

Sector X had you assault a hidden base that was developing a secret weapon. When you got there, you found that the base had already been destroyed, though there were still plenty of enemy fighters and mines throughout the debris.

The final boss was a robot with two large arms and some scary laser eyes. Once you defeated its first form, its head flew off, and Slippy declared that you beat it. It was actually just faking, and came back with full shields. If you didn't destroy it fast enough after it reactivated, then it smacked Slippy down to Titania, and you had to mount a rescue mission. If you did destroy it fast enough, then you got to travel to Macbeth.

There was also a series of gates in Sector X. If you shot a gate enough times, it opened and you were able to fly through it. If you opened all the gates and flew through them, then you entered a wrap section that permitted travel to Sector Z, on the other side of the solar system.
7. One of the possible third stages had you help out your old friend Bill. His squadron was defending a base from an enemy mothership. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Katina

Katina was an all-range-mode level. It started off with you helping Bill and his Bulldog squadron against a few Venomian fighters. Soon, a mothership appeared, and dumped a large number of enemies into the area, making it easier to rack up kills to get that medal.

The mother ship was preparing to destroy the local base with its superlaser. Every now and again, the mothership would open its hatches to release more fighters. You had to destroy the hatches when they were open. Once all four had been destroyed, the core appeared, and you had to destroy it. If you didn't destroy the mothership in time, the base was destroyed, and you were forced to go to Sector X. If you did destroy the mothership, then you were be able to go to Solar.

If you played Katina, then Bill came back to help you in the next level, regardless of which one you chose.
8. One of the possible sixth levels had you attack one of Andross' defence platforms. If you hadn't encountered Star Wolf yet, here is where you did it. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Bolse

Bolse was an all-range-mode level. Bolse was a defense platform protecting Venom. Your job was to take out the towers generating the shield protecting the core. Once the shield was down, the core was exposed, but you then had to deal with even more enemies. Furthermore, any strong point that was destroyed on the core will start to emit beams of energy in random directions. If you didn't visit Fortuna for the third stage, then you also had to deal with Star Wolf.
9. One of the possible second stages had you flying through an asteroid field? Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Meteo

Meteo was the more common (or default) of the two second stages. It took you through the asteroid field near Corneria to take out Andross' forces. While the initial part of the level had you dodging asteroids, and looking out for enemy forces, the end portion is littered with enemies of all kinds.

The boss for Meteo had three stages. The first involved destroying four hard points protected by a rotating shield. The shield absorbed laser energy, and once fully charged, would fire that energy back out at any attackers. Once the hard points were destroyed, the shield fell off, and another hard point was exposed. The second phase used a composite electricity attack. Once the second phase was destroyed, the boss feigned defeat (but Falco saw through his tricks). The boss flipped over, exposing two more hard points, and used a ringed beam attack. Once the boss was defeated, you continued on to Fortuna.

There were a series of blue rings near the end of the Meteo level. If you flew through them, they made your Arwing perform a sort of super barrel roll. If you managed to fly through all of the rings, you entered a warp section that took you to Katina.
10. One of the possible fifth stages had you in the Landmaster, attacking a supply train. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Macbeth

Macbeth was one of the most memorable levels. You were stuck in a Landmaster, chasing a supply train. The train had a large number of Venomian forces supporting it, as well as defensive structures on the train itself. The train engineer would constantly drop of the rear cars in an attempt to block your path. When you destroyed the train all the way to the engine, the engineer released a prototype weapon as the final boss.

The boss would fire lasers at you, drop iron spikes to crush you or make manoeuvring difficult, and would use its tail to attempt to scoop you up and drop you.

There was a series of eight switches along the track. If all eight were hit, then a case opened, exposing a final switch. The final switch, when hit, would change the tracks, and the train would be sent on a collision course with a factory. The exploding factory would give you a +50, making it essential for getting the medal on Macbeth.
11. One of the possible fourth levels had you attacking planet with toxic water, Andross' navy, scary native animals, and searchlights. This was also where you met Kat for the first time. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Zoness

Zoness was an ocean world, with green, polluted water. It was covered in platforms and bases that stood out of the water, and tankers were a common sight.

Zoness was the first location that you met Kat. Kat helped you in your next level, regardless of which one you chose.

There were a series of searchlights on Zoness. If you managed to destroy every single one of them, then you were able to travel to Sector Z. Otherwise, you were sent to Macbeth.

Zoness was only accessible from Aquas.

The boss on Zoness was an old pirate with a modular ship that fell apart easily, but could also be repaired. The boss fight made liberal use of smart bombs, with almost every item that you destroyed revealing one. This was a great moment to stock up on smart bombs for future missions.
12. One of the possible sixth stages had you running through Andross' blockade. During the mission Andross himself would taunt you and the Great Fox could provide covering fire. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Area 6

Area 6 had you run the blockade Andross has set up. It had more enemies than most other levels, and could be one of the most difficult levels to keep all wingmen functional (which was required for the medal).

Area 6 was one of two possible sixth levels (the other being Bolse), and would lead you to the "hard" Venom. At the end of Area 6, the team didn't report in like they usually did. Instead, Fox just said "Venom, here we come", and the team flew for Venom.
13. One of the possible third stages had you in the Blue Marine to take out Andross' secret bioweapon. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Aquas

Aquas was an ocean planet, and the only level in which you got to use the Blue Marine, a submarine.

The Blue Marine moved slowly, and Aquas had a very dark environment, making it a difficult level. Infinite torpedoes were provided, and were needed because they lit up dark areas. The torpedoes also homed in on enemies. This is the one mission where your wingmen were unable to directly help you (or cause problems for you).

Aquas was being polluted and taken over by one of Andross' bioweapons. It was a large clam-like creature. The first stage had you take out three openings on its top that released snake-like creatures to attack you. After that, you had to shoot the fibres holding the shell closed. After shooting them with lasers, they would be come rigid. Hitting them with a torpedo would completely dissolve it. Finally, you had to shoot a flap covering its central eye. When the eye was exposed, you had to hit it with a torpedo. You had to expose and hit the eye a number of times. The hard part about this boss was that for the second and third parts it would frequently shoot projectiles at you. While this added the challenge of having to dodge incoming objects, it made getting a torpedo to its target in time very difficult. Often while shooting a torpedo, you had to continue to shoot along the torpedoes path to make sure no rocks hit it.
14. One of the possible fifth stages had you defend the Great Fox from an ambush. Which level am I talking about?

Answer: Sector Z

While travelling through Sector Z, the Great Fox came under attack. While initially it was only fighters attacking the Great Fox, the Venomian army soon brought in missiles.

At first they brought in one missile. After that, they brought in two, and finally, they brought in three for a total of six. If all six missiles were destroyed, then you got to travel to Area 6. If not, then the Great Fox would be hit, lose an wing, and you had to go to Bolse.

Sector Z could be a difficult level to get a medal on. Each missile was worth 10 points each. This meant, assuming you destroyed all six missile, you still had to take out at least 40 fighters. The fighters tended not to group together much, so it was difficult to get bonuses by taking out multiple at one time. They were also stronger than most other fighters encountered in the game. In this mission your wingmen quite frequently were followed by enemy fighters. This made it difficult to keep them all functioning, especially Slippy. If you got to sector Z from Zoness, then Kat would come by to help. She could easily take out a missile for you, depriving you of 10 precious points.
15. The final level in the game was a toxic wasteland that played home to Andross' forces. Which planet am I talking about?

Answer: Venom

The final planet visited in "Star Fox 64" was Venom. This was where Andross resided and was the home of the Venomian army.

There were two versions of Venom. If you approached Venom from Bolse, then you were on the "easy" Venom, which consisted of a standard, if slightly difficult, rail shooter portion like most of the game so far. At the end, you fought a robot running through a giant hallway, and once that was destroyed, you flew down a straight tube into Andross' lair. Andross, once you finally met him, was a disembodied head and hands. He used electrical attacks and shot rocks at you, and attempted to swat you out of the air. Andross had two hard points, one on each hand. You could stun Andross by shooting his eyes. Depending on which eye you shot, he would expose one of his hands. When both hands were gone, his face broke apart, revealing the robot underneath it, which doid not take much to destroy. Once Andross was gone, the final cutscenes and credits played, though at the very end, a portrait of Andross appeared along with his laugh.

If you approached Venom from Area 6, then you were on "hard" Venom. This started off in all-range-mode with a fight against Star Wolf in upgraded ships, whether you saw them before or not. While it could be difficult to keep your wingmen alive, this fight gave you lots of points for the Venom medal (it didn't matter which version of Venom you played, there was only one medal for the planet). Once you beat Star Wolf, you again flew down to Andross' lair, though there were a few twists and turns, with different items available down each branch, and multiple possible endings. Once you reached Andross, the fight was very similar to the one found in the "easy" version. Once his hands were been destroyed, though, instead of revealing a robot head, Andross revealed himself to be a giant brain. He then sent out his eyes to attack you, which were tethered to the brain with damaging electricity. Once both eyes were destroyed, you had to shoot Andross' hardpoint, which was his cerebellum on the underside of him. Andross moved around and always tried to turn to face you, making it difficult to get a clear shot. On top of that, he would sometimes teleport right behind you, and if you got too close, he wouldl capture you in tentacle-like appendages, dealing massive amounts of damage, before spitting you out again. This attack usually lost you a wing, or two, and any laser upgrades, making the fight from that point on MUCH more difficult. If you ever had to restart the fight, you would regain both wings, but your lasers would be reduced to their weakest form. After the fight, the entire place starts to explode. A mysterious Arwing, seemingly piloted by James McCloud, led you back through the twisting tunnels to the surface. Once you reached the surface, the other Arwing was nowhere to be seen, and the credits rolled, this time without Andross' portrait and laugh at the end.

The disembodied head and hands portion of the Andross fight were reused as the first boss in "Star Fox Assault". Instead of an actual being, the head and hands were a ship piloted by Andross' nephew, Andrew, the former member of Star Wolf.
