"Super Mario Galaxy" - Lumas and Comets Quiz

Lumas play several important roles throughout "Super Mario Galaxy" for the Nintendo Wii. Once comets begin appearing, this is no longer your average "defeat Bowser and rescue the princess" sort of game. Test your knowledge of both of these features!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While you are in the main area of the Comet Observatory, there is a Luma that is always next to Rosalina. This particular Luma is unique because it is the only one that is this color. Which one?

Answer: Black

The black Luma is also found when you go inside each of the observatories. In the Terrace, the first observatory you enter, it explains to you how to use pull stars to view all of the galaxies that you can see within that particular observatory.
2. Hungry Lumas appear on several different occasions throughout "Super Mario Galaxy" and each time they can help you in different ways. There are three main things that hungry Lumas can do to help you, but which of these things is NOT one of them?

Answer: Turn into pull stars

If you come across a hungry Luma that turns into a galaxy or a planet, after you feed it, there will be a launch star left behind for you to launch to that galaxy or planet, but the Luma only turned into the galaxy or planet, not the launch star.

There is only one Luma that can move comets and it can be found in the main area of the Comet Observatory, between Rosalina and the Terrace. This Luma can also give you information about the comets, such as how each one will affect the galaxies.

Occasionally, usually before a boss battle, you will come across a Luma that will sell you your choice of either a 1-Up mushroom or a mushroom to give you double HP if you give it "exact change". The cost of these mushrooms is low and well worth the price.
3. There are three unique power stars in the game. You will know that you have found one of these unique power stars because it is not the yellowish-gold color of the regular power stars. After you recover one of the stars, a Luma appears in the Comet Observatory that is the same color as the power star. What color are these three Lumas?

Answer: Green

Once you have found all three green power stars, the three Lumas open up a previously transparent green launch star in the main area of the Comet Observatory that will take you to what are known as the "Trial Galaxies". These three galaxies are some of the toughest in the game, as they test your skills on three of the most difficult features of the game; namely, ray surfing, controlling a "golf ball", and moving around in a bubble.
4. When Lumas get older, as Rosalina tells you later in the game, they can transform into several different things. Which of these is something that Lumas will NOT turn into?

Answer: Star Bits

Star Bits basically replace coins as the currency of "Super Mario Galaxy". While coins are still available, Star Bits are much more abundant and can actually be "spent", unlike the coins. The two main uses are to "pay" hungry Lumas by feeding them (the cost can range from 20 Star Bits to move a comet to 1,800 star bits to transform into the last galaxy that a hungry Luma can transform into) and to stun small enemies by shooting star bits at them (this can be done by aiming the Wii Remote at an enemy and pressing the B button).
5. In total, how many different types of comets can be found in the game?

Answer: Five

For those of you who said four, you may not have beaten the game yet. The fifth comet, the Purple Comet, appears only after you have beaten the game. The comets turn levels that may at first have seemed easy into something challenging.
6. Reminiscent of "Super Mario Sunshine", one of the comets causes a shadow Mario to appear. When this happens, you have to race him to a power star (not always an easy task). Which comet is it that causes you to enter this race?

Answer: Cosmic Comet

The Cosmic Comet is one of the more exciting comets on the game. Shadow Mario is fast and smart, so it is quite a challenge to beat him. However, it is extremely satisfying once you have done so.

By the way, there is a button combination that you can push that allows Mario to get out to a head start in this situation. Play around and discover what it is for yourself!
7. The Fast Foe Comet does just what it sounds like it would do. It causes all enemies in a level to speed up. You will know when this kind of comet is over a galaxy because it will be what color?

Answer: Yellow

The Fast Foe Comet is the least occurring comet on the game. Unfortunately, it occurs on levels that contain enemies such as Thwomps which can crush you and cause you to lose a life instantly. When encountering a Fast Foe Comet, you have to be very quick with your reflexes.

The blue comet is the Cosmic Comet, red is the Speedy Comet, and grey is the Daredevil Comet. The Purple Comet is, of course, purple.
8. As you experience more and more comets, you will begin to know what to expect from them. After about two visits to Daredevil Comet galaxies, you will probably know what's coming, but in one Daredevil Comet galaxy, the game throws you a curveball. Which galaxy is it?

Answer: Melty Molten Galaxy

Under normal circumstances, when a Daredevil Comet is in orbit, you will start the level right in front of a boss area with only one hit point on your life meter and no coins anywhere to refill it. In the Melty Molten Galaxy (the galaxy that you need the most power stars to open, next to the final Bowser galaxy), however, you have to go through the entire level with only one hit point and no way to refill it. Thankfully, at the end of this level, there is no boss.
9. If you see a red comet in orbit, it is a Speedy Comet. The Speedy Comet causes you to have to replay a star in that galaxy, only this time, you will have a time limit imposed on you. Which of the following galaxies gives you the longest amount of time to complete this challenge?

Answer: Dreadnaught Galaxy

When you get to the Dreadnaught Galaxy and see that you are given a whopping six minutes to complete the level, you know that it's going to be difficult. The other levels are fairly long, but less challenging, so you should be able to make your way through them quickly. The least amount of time you have for any Speedy Comet level is four minutes.
10. Purple Comets are special comets that will eventually go by nearly every galaxy in the game. When one is in orbit, you will have to collect purple coins in that galaxy. How many per galaxy?

Answer: 100

If you follow the storyline and visit levels in order, you should first come across the 100 purple coins when you are trying to unlock the flying power-up. Once you get all 100 there, you can access the red star that allows you to fly in various areas of the Comet Observatory.

In the other galaxies, the coins are either spread out and hidden throughout the galaxy or they are in a line but surrounded by obstacles. If you really want a challenge, try the Toy Time Galaxy when a Purple Comet is in orbit, but make sure you have 99 lives because more than likely, you will need them!
