Super Mario Galaxy Trivia Questions

1. What kind of star is the very first star?

From Quiz
Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Grand Star

If you chose power star, you are thinking about the one in Good Egg Galaxy. I'm talking about the grand star in the Gateway Galaxy, where you need to switch all the yellow switches to blue.

2. Who is the lady that takes Mario onto her comet observatory to help her find the power stars?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Rosalina

Rosalina's Lumas find Mario stranded on a planet. They decide to test him by playing hide and seek. Once Mario has found them all, they take him to Rosalina and she asks Mario to help find the missing power stars.

3. How many coloured types of Luma are there?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Nine

Yellow Lumas transform into Launch and Sling Stars; Green Lumas allow access to the Trial Galaxies; Blue Lumas transform into Pull Stars; and Red Lumas are found near Red Power Stars that grant Mario the ability to fly for a short time. Mario's Luma is coloured Cream, the Luma that tells you about Prankster comets is Purple, Hungry Lumas are Pink, the LumaShop Lumas are Light Blue, and Polari is the Dark Brown Luma that appears in each of the domes and also next to Rosalina at the centre of the Comet Observatory. Luma is also the name of the first Luma that Rosalina met, and the one which grants Mario his abilities.

4. The first stop in the Trial Galaxies will be the Loopdeswoop Galaxy. What is the name of the only star in this Galaxy?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" Trials and Tyrants

Answer: The Galaxy's Greatest Wave

Actually all of these would be accurate descriptions. The Loopdeswoop Galaxy obviously is very similar to the Loopdeloop Galaxy found in the Terrace. However, this course is much more difficult than the other course. There are several sharp turns and steep drops. However, if you take your time and don't necessarily try to beat the best time, it is manageable to get through this course. If you beat the course in under the Elder Penguin's time, you get the only Power Star in this galaxy.

5. The Gate is actually the Gateway Galaxy, the galaxy you started in. There is only one mission left in this galaxy. What kind of Power Star do you get when you complete the second star in the Gateway Galaxy?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Gate and the Garden

Answer: a red Power Star

All Power Stars except for ten are normal yellow Power Stars. There are three green Power Stars and all three are needed to open up the Trial Galaxies. The three green Power Stars are found in the following missions: Treasure of the Pyramid, The Secret of Buoy Base, and Luigi under the Saucer. These three missions are found in the Dusty Dune Galaxy, the Buoy Base Galaxy, and the Battlerock Galaxy. There are also six Grand Stars found in each of the hubs except for the Garden. The first star you got in the Gateway Galaxy was a Grand Star too. The only red Power Star is found as the other star in the Gateway Galaxy. It is red because you use the red star in this galaxy to fly and collect 100 purple coins. If you get the red Power Star, red stars will appear around the Comet Observatory. Also this is the only 100 Purple Coin challenge you can accomplish before facing Bowser for the final time.

6. The first stop in the Bedroom is the Gusty Garden Galaxy. In the episode titled "The Dirty Tricks of Major Burrows", how many apples does the giant worm go through before you reach the launch star at the top of it's nose?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Bedroom

Answer: Three

Once again Nintendo returns with it's recurring theme of three. The giant worm resembles a green Wiggler and it moves from apple to apple by ground pounding pegs found in the apples. Major Burrows is the boss of the Gusty Garden Galaxy, which is known to be one of the most favored parts of the soundtrack. Major Burrows is a larger version of the common Mario enemy Monty Mole. The only difference is that you cannot jump on his head as he has a spiked helmet, and he hides underground until you force him above by ground pounding the ground around him. If you want to collect all 120 stars you will have to battle Major Burrows one more time but with only one unit of health as there will be a Daredevil Comet in orbit. Like the giant worm, Major Burrows will also take three hits to be defeated.

7. The first stop in the Kitchen is the Beach Bowl Galaxy, which is the first galaxy to contain a large underwater area. What is the name of the large stone where the star, The Secret Undersea Cavern, is located?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Kitchen

Answer: Cyclone Stone

This can be figured out by taking on the Fast Foe Comet Star, Fast Foes on the Cyclone Stone. Fast Foe Comets are the rarest Prankster comets in the game only appearing only twice, once in the Beach Bowl Galaxy and again in the Toy Time Galaxy. Fast foe comets make enemies move faster than they normally would and the main enemies that appear during this time are Thwomps and large boxes that only one side is safe to stand under or you'll get flattened. This star is almost exactly the same as the Secret Undersea Cavern star. The only differences are you start out on the Cyclone Stone instead of breaking open the wall to get to the Launch Star, and the foes are obviously faster.

8. The first stop is the Space Junk Galaxy. How many stars require you to walk across debris that automatically assembles to make platforms?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Fountain

Answer: 3

The three stars are Pull Star Path, Pull Star Path Speed Run, and Purple Coin Spacewalk. This debris is floating away in space until you draw near a section where more platforms need to appear. The Pull Star Path is the first instance when you have to collect several silver stars to collect one Power Star. The silver stars are only in a small area in this stage but other times they may encompass the whole galaxy like in the Sea Slide Galaxy. This is also the first galaxy to introduce Secret Stars. Much like the ones found in "Super Mario 64," and "Super Mario 64 DS," these stars are hidden and can be found by taking an alternate route than the actual mission. Secret Stars appear in a secret mission and it is easy to tell which one because once you complete a mission if you go to the Mission Select screen, there will be a question mark above one of the completed missions. Secret Stars are usually symbolized by Hungry Lumas who will turn into planets if you feed them enough star bits.

9. In the introduction scene, Peach writes a letter to Mario. What is a small synopsis of what the letter said?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Peach would be waiting for Mario for the Star Festival

In the letter says that Peach would be waiting for Mario at the entrance of the castle to presence the Star Festival. Every hundred years a great and beautiful comet passes by Mushroom Kingdom, leaving thousands of Star Bits behind. This event is known as the Star Festival. As Mario walks through the streets of the Kingdom, Bowser once again kidnaps Peach and the game begins!

10. While you are in the main area of the Comet Observatory, there is a Luma that is always next to Rosalina. This particular Luma is unique because it is the only one that is this color. Which one?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" - Lumas and Comets

Answer: Black

The black Luma is also found when you go inside each of the observatories. In the Terrace, the first observatory you enter, it explains to you how to use pull stars to view all of the galaxies that you can see within that particular observatory.

11. How many galaxies can be found in the Terrace? (Exclude the hungry Luma outside the Terrace.)

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" - The Terrace

Answer: Five

Five is the number of galaxies that can be found in most rooms. The five galaxies that can be found in the Terrace are: Good Egg Galaxy, Honeyhive Galaxy, Flipswitch Galaxy, Loopdeloop Galaxy, and Bowser Jr.'s Robot Reactor.

12. What, below, makes an appearance?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Blooper

Blooper makes an appearance at Deep Dark Galaxy, in the missions "Guppy and the Underground Lake" and "Boo in a Box". If you don't know what a Sushi is, it's a shark that the toad in "Mario Party 9" calls.

13. What happens to Dry Bones when you jump on them?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Their bones break apart, but form seconds later

With most enemies in the game, you would jump on them, and they would disappear and give you a coin. With Dry Bones, you jump on him and he breaks apart into multiple bones, then a few seconds later he reassembles himself.

14. Which Toad is the brightest and gives Mario useful information?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Blue

The blue toad tells Mario information most of the times you meet him. He seems to know everything about space, and he will give you lots of information on how to pass through levels (in a few words, that is).

15. Which move does Mario learn after talking to Rosalina?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" (Wii): The Basics

Answer: Spin

Rosalina gives you the white Luma you saw earlier and it gives him the ability to spin. Jumping is Mario's natural ability and he cannot punch.

16. How many penguins are there in the Loopdeswoop Galaxy before you get on the ray? (count the elder penguin)

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" Trials and Tyrants

Answer: Five

These are the same five penguins you talked to in the Loopdeloop Galaxy. They will give you minor tips as a refresher course for Ray Surfing. The elder penguin didn't seem so concerned last time, but this time he's a little more cautious. He even asks you if you're sure you want to race the course. This statement definitely is not one to reassure you.

17. The Hungry Luma next to the Gate, leads to Boo's Boneyard Galaxy. How many Star Bits can you get in this galaxy before facing the Speedster?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Gate and the Garden

Answer: Seventeen

For those of you who guessed, or thought you knew, that the answer was eleven, you obviously know that you are missing six. The six extra Star Bits are found by using your spin attack on the eye holes of the skull planetoid. And for your information, ten is the amount of coins you can collect before facing the Spooky Speedster. You faced the Spooky Speedster in the Ghostly Galaxy in the mission A Very Spooky Sprint. In this race, you had to use Pull Stars, and a Sling Star if you used it, to try and beat the Spooky Speedster to the finish. In this race, you face the Spooky Speedster again but this time as Boo Mario. This is a pretty straight forward race as you have to dodge hitting walls and other obstacles as once again you try to beat the Spooky Speedster to the finish line.

18. What side of the puzzle cube has the most purple coins in the Gusty Garden Galaxy?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Bedroom

Answer: the side that is mainly composed of large hedges

Yes the side with humongous hedges has 31 coins. There are a total of 150 purple coins on the cube. The side with the least amount of coins is the side with the thin horizontal hedges and star bit beds. This side only has 17 coins. The sides with the wooden beams along with the grassy area both have 25 coins. The side with circular hedges with a hole that leads to the grassy area has 24 coins. The side with the fountain has 28 coins. And since the purple coin challenge is confined to such a small area there is a time limit.

19. Each time you start the game, how many lives does Mario have?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" (Wii)

Answer: four

The lives you collected in previous times of playing do not accumulate. During the game, you can collect more lives but they will not be permanent and you won't have those extra lives back the next time you play the game. If you get fifty star bits you will get another life, or you can collect a green 1-UP Mushroom.

20. In the star titled, Wall Jumping up Waterfalls, you need help from what enemy in order to get the star?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Kitchen

Answer: Cataquack & Cataquacks

Cataquacks originally appeared in "Super Mario Sunshine" for the Gamecube and are large duck like creatures. The Cataquacks won't hurt you but they will chase after you and launch you higher than you could reach with a normal jump. In order to get the secret star of the Beach Bowl Galaxy, you need to lure a Cataquack along some docks so he can bounce you up to the ? coin which makes an ice flower appear. Once you turn into Ice Mario, you are able to wall jump up waterfalls since jumping on them will make part of the waterfall freeze. You will eventually reach an area where the fun in the sun disappears as you come across a lake surrounded by ice. This is where getting the star can get frustrating. Using an ice flower you must walk across the water having a Cataquack chase you on the ice you formed...without falling off and drowning. The Cataquack will appear again if it drowns but it may take a while for the Cataquack to finally get to the small island with the star above it. You will use Cataquacks again in the Gold Leaf Galaxy for the aptly named, Cataquack to the Skies, star.

21. How many pedestals are there in the battle against Tarantox?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Fountain

Answer: 6

There are four near the bottom and two at the top. Tarantox is a giant insect that has several weak points. In addition to trying to adjust to the viewpoints of running around in a giant circle, Tarantox will constantly rotate within the circle shooting acid from it's mouth. You must use sling pods to throw yourself at his glowing spots. Even though there are five, the main one you want to hit is the large one in the back. Once you hit that, it will cause Tarantox to flip over exposing three spots on his underside. Using sling pods again, you need to burst all three of these spots. Tarantox will flip over on to his front when all three spots are hit and he will be angrier. All four spots on his side and his mouth will spew acid out. If you burst a spot on its side, it will stop spewing acid, but once again the main target is the large back spot. Flip him over again and burst all three spots on his underside again and you have yourself another star. Tarantox is the only boss in the fountain that will not reappear later in the game.

22. The first stop is the Good Egg Galaxy. If you take the orange pipe into the house what will you find?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" - The Terrace

Answer: a ? coin

The orange pipe can be found on the underside of the first planet. You will see a ? coin, which once activated, will form a path of musical notes. Collect all the notes before time is up, and a 1-up mushroom will appear.

23. What are the names of the star-like beings that speak to Mario and can transform?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" Pre-Knowledge

Answer: Lumas

Lumas come in different colors and play different roles. Some are "Hungry Lumas" that will reward Mario for feeding them. Some are Lumas that can transform for Mario if he can do a favor or complete a task for them. They are in just about every corner of the game and will come in quite handy if you have enough Star Bits!

24. After you get 120 stars with both Mario and Luigi, you unlock a final purple coin mission. Where do you enter the galaxy?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: On the planet with the trial galaxies

The game makers decided to add a 121st star in the game. The level takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, where everything is back to normal. This level is probably one of the easiest levels in the game.

25. Through most of the game, what is the Yellow Toad doing?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Sleeping

Most of the time, he's sleeping in some flowers next to the garage. If you walk up to him and press the A button, you can read what he is dreaming about.

26. Which galaxy is a heaven of toys?

From Quiz Super Mario Galaxy

Answer: Toy Time Galaxy

Toy Time Galaxy appears to be a giant playroom. It has toys as far as the eye can see. It even has two toy bosses! In Star 3, Mario will traverse down a lane of cakes, over ice creams, oranges, lollipops, and even snow cones!

27. After clearing the first galaxy and rescue the Grand Star, where do you go?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" (Wii): The Basics

Answer: Comet Observatory

The Comet Observatory is the main hub where you go to after acquiring each star. It is divided into several sections on several levels.

28. The Secret Star in the Deep Dark Galaxy sounds like it was named after an old toy. What is the name of the Secret Star?

From Quiz "Super Mario Galaxy" The Gate and the Garden

Answer: Boo in a Box

The old toy referred to the classic toy a jack in a box. This is the only time in the entire galaxy where the rules of gravity do not apply. In order to get to this star you must blow up the underwater mines that guard part of a sunken ship at the bottom of the lake. Once you do this a Launch Star will appear sending you to the small box-like planetoid. In this small area there is a ball that rolls around with spikes, several arrows that switch the gravity, and of course a Boo. The goal is to deal with the changes of gravity until you open up a hatch that will let light in destroying the Boo who is holding the Star.
