The World of the Wind Waker Trivia Quiz

This quiz is about the various islands and people that make up the Great Sea archipelago in Nintendo Gamecube's 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker' (this should work better than any old map a Fishman can give you).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many islands (or island groups) are in the Great Sea?

Answer: 49

They are pretty much separated like a chessboard, one island or group in each of the 49 squares. As the story goes, 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker' takes place many years after the N64 game 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time'. In that timespan, the land of Hyrule was inundated by a great flood, leaving only the tops of the tallest mountains to show as the islands of the Great Sea.
2. What island does our hero call home?

Answer: Outset Island

It's actually two main islands, connected by two bridges. Outset has a population of 11 (including yourself, your sister Aryll, your grandmother and the great god Jabun). Because this is years after 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time', technically, you are not Link (you have the option to choose another name), but Grandma dresses you up like him as an homage to his heroic deeds.
3. On what island will you find the largest town (you may know it by its distinctive windmill-driven Ferris Wheel/Lighthouse)?

Answer: Windfall Island

It has been speculated that Windfall may actually be the old Kakariko Village from 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time' (that windmill DOES look familiar). This is the most populated island in the Great Sea and plenty of opportunities to get all sorts of goodies.
4. Scattered about the islands, and congregating in most of the temples, are nasty little blobs called ChuChus that give off 'Chu Jelly' which can restore life or magic once they're defeated and made into a potion. What other item on the Great Sea can be used as a potion?

Answer: Boku Baba seeds

Boko Babas (you may know them from 'Ocarina of Time' as Deku Babas) are large carnivorous plants that will literally chew you up and spit you out. If you chop them off at the stem, most will leave behind a little Boku Baba seed. Take these seeds to the Forest Haven, where the Korok potion maker Hollo will make a healthy brew for you. Meanwhile, on Outset Island, your own grandmother makes Elixir Soup (she gets the ingredients herself) that will not only restore life, but will double your hit power until you get hit.
5. Which island is NOT on the seas at the start of the game?

Answer: Tower of the Gods

As you collect the magic pearls named for the Triforce deities (Din, Farore and Nayru) you place them on statues on the three Triangle Islands. Putting the last pearl in place will set off a chain reaction causing the Tower of the Gods to rise to the surface.
6. In numerous sections of the Great Sea, you can learn how to better perform tasks necessary for your adventure and get prizes in the end. Which of the following can you NOT work at?

Answer: Swimming

At the Flight Control Platform near Dragon Roost Island, you strive to glide the farthest on your Deku Leaf. At the Boating Course further south, you learn to sail your boat through an obstacle course of barrels and rupees. On Outset Island, Orca will run you through a session with the sword to see if you can hit him 100 times. There are other games, but swimming is not one of them.
7. What is the first island where our hero runs into Ganondorf?

Answer: The Forsaken Fortress

The hero (that's you) will set sail with some pirates, led by Tetra (you know her by another name...Princess Zelda) after Aryll is kidnapped. You will find other girls in similar predicaments along with her. Sadly, your first foray into the Fortress will be short lived, as a giant bird, the Helmaroc King, will grab you and toss your little carcass out into the ocean, where you will be rescued by the King of Red Lions.
8. Which of the island in the Great Sea can eventually be yours?

Answer: The Private Oasis

The oasis is originally owned by Mrs. Marie, the Windfall Island schoolteacher who has a thing for baubles, bangles and Joy Pendants. If Link (that's you, ya know) can tame the Killer Bees and give Mrs. Marie twenty Joy Pendants, she will give you the deed to the oasis, thereafter known on the sea map as '(insert your name here)'s Oasis'.
9. By what name are the four rowdy boys on Windfall Island collectively known as?

Answer: The Killer Bees

If you selected 'The Bombers' you're on the wrong game...that's the boys' gang from Clock Town in 'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask'. As a favor to Mrs. Marie, you challenge Ivan and the boys to a game of hide-and-seek. Finding them all will get them to go to school and earn Mrs. Marie's gratitude, plus a rupee or two.
10. Where can you find the Queen of the Faries?

Answer: Mother and Child Island

For the record, the Queen of the Faries is a floating, ethereal five-year-old girl. Getting to see her is the difficult part...you have to defeat Cyclos on the seas and learn the Ballad of Gales to get inside the main 'mother' island, which appears to be a dormant volcano (could it be the remnants of Death Mountain?!?). Once you accomplish that, she will give you the Fire and Ice arrows for your Hero's Bow.
11. There are a number of characters that you would swear you've seen before...because you have, in earlier 'Zelda' games. Which of the following is a new character in 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker'?

Answer: Beedle

The Wind Waker's Deku Tree may actually be the Deku Sprout, which sprung up after the death of the original Great Tree in 'Ocarina of Time'. Tingle is a 35-year-old man who dresses up like a fairy (don't ask). He first appeared hovering in a red balloon over Clock Town in 'Majora's Mask'. Ganondorf (or Ganon, if you prefer) had been Link's foil in most of the Zelda games.

It is Beedle, the high seas peddler, who first appears here. He will be seen next in 'The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap'.
12. Which of the following is NOT one of the races of the inhabitants of the Great Sea in 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker'?

Answer: Sheikah

The Koroks, who live on the Forest Haven with the Great Deku Tree, are decendants of the original Kokiri of 'Ocarina of Time' fame. There is some question as to where the flying Rito emerged from, either the sea-faring Zora race or the Hylians themselves. What is know is they are not born with the ability to fly...they must earn that with a scale from the dragon Valoo.

There's only a handful of so-called 'travelling salesmen' who are scattered on the Great Sea, but not only do they bear the Goron emblem on their backpacks, if you swing your Deku Leaf at them, their hats will fly up, revealing the truth.
13. Where are Hyrule Castle and Ganon's Castle located in 'The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker'?

Answer: Beneath the Tower of the Gods

When Link placed the Goddess' pearls on the three Triangle Islands, the resulting chain of events created the Tower of the Gods. When Link rings the bell at the top of the Tower after defeating Gohdan (who kinda looks like Bongo Bongo with armour), the ringing creates a direct path to Hyrule Castle directly beneath the Tower. Ganon's Castle is behind Hyrule, but is protected by a force field until the Master Sword is regenerated with energy.
14. Our hero (that's you) will need at some point to get some power to his sword. One of the places he will need to go is the Earth Temple at Headstone Island. Where is the Wind Temple located?

Answer: Gale Isle

Can't really miss it...it's the one with the giant wind coming out of the mouth of a giant cave, blowing down trees and grass in its path. Unless you get the Iron Boots from the Ice Ring Isle, you will never get inside the temple.
15. Which of the following islands on the Great Sea is NOT a man-made formation?

Answer: Spectacle Island

The Islet of Steel is just what it implies...a huge steel formation rising out of the water, covered by gunboats and huge birds. The Tower was created as a portal to the undersea world of Hyrule. The Flight Control Platform was made by the Rito people to practice their flying skills.
