Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This sequel to Square Soft's famous RPG series featured character such as Terra Branford and Locke Cole. The game followed their adventures as they tried to fight against a group of evil empires known as the Espers. What mystical game was this?

Answer: Final Fantasy VI

"Final Fantasy 6" was released in America as "Final Fantasy 3". "Final Fantasy 6" did not just take an old idea and try and turn it into something it isn't. What the developers, at Square, did was keep all of the winning mechanics from number four and added improved graphics, sound, and mechanics into the game. The game also featured a masterfully innovative Esper summoning system.
2. Another RPG hit by the famous Square Soft was released in 1995. The game's most interesting aspect was the main character's ability to travel through time. Which addicting game is this?

Answer: Chrono Trigger

The game begins in a magical land, called Guardia, in the year 1000. There, the main character, Crono acquires a teleportation device from a girl named Marle. With it, the character could travel through time and battle in the past, present, and future.

The true reason why this game made the list was the fact that there were more than twelve unique endings, making for an infinitely re-playable experience.
3. This 1994 game, exclusively for the Super Nintendo marked the return of everyone's favorite female bounty-hunter: Samus Aran. In this installment, her job was to bring down a group of space pirates on the planet Zebes, and retake the larva of a rare creature. What legendary shooter is this?

Answer: Super Metroid

Although the 3D gaming-era was just a mere year away from revolutionizing the gaming genre as we know it, "Super Metroid" proved to be an immense and beautiful 2D shooter. Not only did it feature colorful graphics that added atmosphere, it gave the player the ability to explore the planet, collect new power-ups, and unravel a very well written story. Truly one of the gems of the early '90s.
4. Lucasarts finally took the advantage to make a "Star Wars" game for the PC. This game was a flight game/shooter that took place right after the Battle of Hoth. In it, the player assumed the role of a young imperial pilot who was set to help destroy the rebel alliance. What awe-inspiring game was this?

Answer: Star Wars: Tie Fighter

"Star Wars: Tie Fighter" was a true revolution in the space-shooting genre. The game featured clear and coherent audio, easy to master controls, and squad commands. The game was also one of the first games to feature pure 3D graphics that never failed to blow away the player. Truly one of Lucasarts' greatest marvels.
5. This fighting game, developed by Midway re-revolutionized the 2D fighting genre by adding a multitude of playable characters like Liu Kang, and Scorpion, as well as adding interactive levels, and creating level specific fatalities. It was fun, simple, and addictive. What game was this?

Answer: Mortal Kombat 2

"Mortal Kombat 2" was so popular that when it was released in arcades, special reinforced game cabinets were installed so people wouldn't steal the game's motherboard for their personal use. The interesting fighting physics, and the uncensored visual effects contributed to making this game undoubtedly the best game in the series.
6. This strategy game, released by Blizzard for the PC, in 1995, was set in a fantasy universe and featured a war between humans and Orcs. What game is this?

Answer: Warcraft 2

The game has a lot of depth and numerous unit and building types. The game is easy to use, and very user friendly. The game is played on a three dimensional landscape, that is heavily detailed. Wonderfully animated cut-scenes are scattered throughout the game and add some wonderful nostalgia to the game.
7. Now that the 3D game revolution hit the fighting genre, Sega made this sensational fighting game starring characters like Akira Yuki, and Jacky. What game was this?

Answer: Virtua Fighter 2

Perhaps the most well-known feature of the game was its crisp 3-dimensional graphics. Although the graphics are rather crude to today's standards, they were top of the line in 1995. The game also ran at 60 frames per second, without any slowdown, a very big accomplishment considering the simplicity of the graphics engines of the time.

The arena could also be extended to an unimaginable length of 82 meters. Definitely one of the best fighting games ever made.
8. Seeing the success of Sega's fighting game, Sony tried to compete against it, with a fighting game of their own. This particular fighting game was actually driven by a well-written story and memorable characters such as Heihachi, and Law. What game was this?

Answer: Tekken

Although released almost two years after the original "Virtua Fighter" game, it still proved revolutionary enough to succeed in the crowded game market. Controls were different from other games, graphics were smoother and more pixilated, and the unlockable storyboards proved to be the game's reasons for success.
9. This 1995 game, released exclusively for the PC, put the player into the perspective of a soldier driving large robotic mechs. This game was one of the first 3D games to use an open landscape to give players freedom to do almost anything they want. What game was this?

Answer: Mech Warrior 2

The game not only had appealing 3D graphics, it featured dynamic sound effects, an interesting story, and most notably, online play. The gameplay was difficult, and thus, not for everyone. Regardless, many developers are still trying to match the quality and success of this game.
10. This 1994 PC strategy game made the player battle an alien invasion by building defense bases and attacking UFOs. What game is this?

Answer: X-Com: UFO Defense

Although the game was intended to have a simple style, it was so well executed, that the game became very popular among strategy and war game fans. A dark and gloomy atmosphere was created by making the soldiers seem weak and unable to protect themselves against the aliens.
