Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game, released by Rockstar North for the PS2 in 2002, was seen as a vastly superior project, next to its 2001 counter-part. This game took place in the 1980s and put the player into the perspective of a man named Tommy Vercetti in a bright neon littered city, similar to Miami. What game was this?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto Vice City

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City", took place in the fictional city of 'Vice City'. Its appearance was very similar to that of Miami, Florida. The game improved on every aspect of "Grand Theft Auto III". The graphics were vastly upgraded, the size of the islands were drastically increased and the controls were improved.

The audio portion, of the game, was one of the best for any games of the year. The voice-acting was acted out by professional actors, including Ray Liotta, Tom Sizemore, and William Fichtner.

The music, all from the 1980s, were well-integrated into the radio system. They ranged form early hip-hop music, to the heavy metal made famous by bands like Iron Maiden, and Motley Crue. The success of its predecessor and the positive reviews prompted the game to become the best-selling game of 2002.
2. In this game, a bald contract killer named "47" was forced to kill people worldwide after his friend, an Italian Catholic priest, was kidnapped. The game took place in several worldwide locales including Russia, Italy and Japan. What game was this?

Answer: Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

"Hitman 2" was the 2002 sequel, to the 2000 game "Hitman: Codename 47". Almost all aspects of the original, that critics deemed negative were fixed for the sequel. Controls were improved, graphics were indefinitely upgraded, and the ability to go in disguise was simplified.

The addition of the always entertaining rag-doll effects added some extra incentive to play. The ability to unlock special weapons by acquiring the "Silent Assassin" rank in each level, also prompted many gamers to play more stealthily.
3. The idea for an RPG usually takes months of writing and collaborating. The idea for this 2002 RPG, saw the infamous Square-Enix company partner with the Disney Entertainment Company. New characters were created to participate in a world with Disney and "Final Fantasy" characters alike. What game was this?

Answer: Kingdom Hearts

"Kingdom Hearts", put the player into the perspective of a character named Sora. The game took the player to locales all over the Disney world. "Final Fantasy", as well as "Disney" characters littered the land and could help the player in their adventure.

The non turn-based battle system, chased away some hardcore "Final Fantasy" fans, however, it remained popular enough to spawn a sequel.
4. Following in the footsteps of the illustrious "Grand Theft Auto" games, this game placed the player into the role of a driver for a notorious mob group located in a fictional city named Lost Heaven, in the 1930s. What game was this?

Answer: Mafia

The main character, that the user controlled was named Thomas Angelo. He was a driver for a mafia group, before he was granted the ability to work for other mafia families. The game had a range in time-line as it started in the 1930s, and eventually ended in the 1950s.

The main feature it had, which slightly set it apart from the "Grand Theft Auto" games was the ability of the player to get tickets and arrests for different offenses including speeding, fighting, lock picking, running red lights, and crashing.

It was a considerably well received game, but the game was criticized for many bugs that the developers failed to remove. Those included the police AI's inability to tell that the player was driving on the wrong side of the road, as well as unintelligent enemy AI who'd try to attack an armed or vehicular player with fists.
5. This sequel to Volition's 2001 surprise hit took place years after the original. This time, taking place on Earth, the player was thrust into the role of a super-soldier named Alias. Among the most useful additions to the game was a Geo-Mod system, similar to that of the first. What game was this?

Answer: Red Faction 2

Released for the Playstation 2, X-Box, Gamecube, and PC in 2002 "Red Faction 2" was a brilliant, however ill-received game. It put the player into the role of a soldier named Alias as he teamed up with a group of five other soldiers. The story was well-acted the graphics were improved from the first game and the game was divided into convenient chapters.

Many reviewers, however, believed that the Geo-Mod was underused, unlike the first one. The possibility for greatness was hindered by that one inherent flaw.
6. This game, a sequel to one of the 1980's most influential side-scrolling games, put the player into the perspective of an unnamed member of royalty. His key weapon was called the Dagger of Time, and it allowed him to travel backwards in time and freeze enemies. What game was this?

Answer: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

"Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" was released in 2003 for the Playstation 2, X-Box, Gamecube, Game Boy and cell-phone. The game had fantastic reviews from metacritic.com and gamerankings.com with a 9.2 out of 10. One of the key reasons for the great reviews was that the game featured many different elements to keep a player hooked.

It included puzzle elements, platforming elements, intense combat and an innovative time-travel ability. The game became a solid seller primarily due to the positive reviews it received.
7. After some abysmal skateboarding and wrestling games, the developers forced to develop this game knew that they had to make something actually fun to play. Good thing that they succeeded. This game starred characters like Bart, Homer, and Lisa. It used the winning formula of "Grand Theft Auto" and incorporated the infamous television show's typical humor. What game was this?

Answer: Simpsons: Hit and Run

"Simpsons: Hit and Run" was an action-adventure/platform game. The story took the player all over the infamous town of Springfield with purpose of finding the truth behind an alien invasion and a mysterious new soda pop that could raise the dead. The game had all of the vehicles from the television show and included competent voice-overs from the actual cast.

The lack of difficulty and replayability was what ended up preventing it from being recognized as one of the greatest games with a television license.
8. This fighting game, released for the Playstation 2 served as a direct follow-up to a Sega Dreamcast title. It featured many interesting elements not seen often in fighting games, including the use of weapons and considerably interactive environments. In fact, the game was named after the story's primary weapon. What game was this?

Answer: Soul Calibur 2

"Soul Calibur 2", was a smashing success, upon release in 2003. Among its many factors for success included its simple combo system, where button mashing was unnecessary, and an entertaining story. The different home console versions of the game each had one special unlockable character.

The Nintendo Gamecube had Link, from the "Legend of Zelda" series, the Microsoft X-Box had Spawn, from the Macfarlane comic of the same name and the Playstation 2 had Heihachi from the "Tekken" series. Its overall quality earned it the title of best-fighting game in the 2003 Game Critics Awards.
9. This game, another of the Tom Clancy games, put the player into the perspective of an espionage agent, named Sam Fisher. Stealth was the name of the game, and it was executed with a true sense of difficulty and apparent programming effort. What was the game?

Answer: Splinter Cell

"Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" originally seemed to have the makings of just another stealth game. It had the anti-terrorist theme, and that's where the comparison with other games ended. Using a brand-new graphics engine capable of simulating infrared, thermal and regular vision, the game incorporated the use of stealth, action and amazing acrobatics to help the player in a considerably difficult adventure.

In 2002, the game won action game of the year from the Game Critics Awards.
10. Although the extreme sports genre had started in the late 1990s, the luster of the genre began to disappear with each new take. This game, took the old formula of its predecessors and allowed the player to not only skate through a large environment, but to interact with pedestrians and accomplish goals for them. What game was this?

Answer: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

The game was different from its previous iterations. Most of the other games simply forced the player to get a certain amount of points, collect money, and collect the letters to spell the word "S-K-A-T-E". This time, the style was retained but a system of derivation was made, where people could play tennis, enter races and even jump dump-trucks for cold hard cash. This game proved to be the stepping stone for the future of the now uninspiring "Tony Hawk" franchise.
