Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Imagine this: You're playing a shooter game. You're walking down a hallway when another player bursts from the shadows and kills you. Over the course of the game, this player manages to rank a great number of kills by attacking whomever passes through that hallway. What is a player such as this usually referred to as?

Answer: Camper

Camping is the act of remaining in a single place for a prolonged period of time--usually in a first- or third-person shooter--for the sole purpose of ranking up a high kill streak count. Because the player with the most kills usually wins the match, camping is an effective albeit very frowned upon method of approaching things.
2. Imagine this: You're playing a video game online. All of a sudden, the game starts becoming slower and slower. The game now takes full seconds to recognize a command whereas before it was instantaneous. What is happening?

Answer: Lag

Lag is when a game's number of frames sharply drops. This often occurs in areas of high latency. For example, lag may occur when players enter an area with an overabundance of heavily coded objects such as a cathedral with burning torches on the walls and tiny spiders skittering across the floor.

The more objects on screen at one time increases the potential of lag occurring though many games take precautionary measures to prevent this.
3. Video game consoles are effectively useless without corresponding software and that comes in many different flavors. There are 'launch titles' which are the first games to be released on a system when it first becomes available for sale, then there are the 'exclusive' titles which are the games released for a single console usually due to the console manufacturer owning the rights to a particular game or series of games. What is the entire collection of games for a console traditionally called?

Answer: A library

A library is a console's complete software lineup. This can range from a few dozen to several hundred games depending on how many games were made for a particular console. For instance, Nintendo's Virtual Boy was an unsuccessful console that had a total library of only twenty-two games. On the other hand, the immensely popular Sega Genesis featured a library of games numbering well into the 700s.
4. Imagine this: You're playing a racing game and you've been in the top three positions the whole race. You speed into first and are nearing the finish line when a racer that has been consistently in the bottom three positions the entire race speeds past you and crosses the finish line before you. What just happened?

Answer: Rubberbanding

Rubberbanding is when a character in a racing game--usually one that has performed poorly--gains a sudden burst of speed and dashes somewhere into the top three positions. This most often occurs during harder difficulty races. "Super Mario Kart" features some of the earliest examples of rubberbanding.

Less frequently, rubberbanding can refer to unintentional warping that occurs as a result of lag.
5. Imagine this: You are playing "Megaman 2" for the original Nintendo. You come across a narrow hallway with infinitely spawning drill enemies that are easy to destroy. You decide to stick around for a while and destroy as many as you can because they sometimes drop energy pellets when defeated and you could use a few. What are you doing?

Answer: Farming

Farming is the act of remaining in a singular area for a prolonged amount of time in order to obtain more of a certain item. While farming can be viewed as a form of camping, there are several differences that separate the two. Firstly, farming is usually executed during a single player campaign. Secondly, farming is usually beneficial to the player without threat of hindering the experience of others.

For instance, players in an role-playing game (RPG) may remain in a single area for a while fighting low level enemies in an attempt to farm experience points and thus become stronger.
6. Imagine this: You're playing a racing game. You decide to partake in a time trial to help you develop your technique on a certain track. As the time trial begins, you notices another car in front of you which is odd as time trials are often single player experiences. What is that car traditionally called?

Answer: Ghost

A ghost is a transparent replay of a previous track record. For example, in the racing game "Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed", the time trials offer four different ghosts to race against each harder than the last. By beating the best time for one ghost, the next is unlocked.

This helps players develop their skills and may even assist them in discovering a shortcut or an easier way to make a certain turn.
7. Imagine this: You're playing an online shooter. You notice an enemy soldier and start shooting at them. Your gunfire is clearly dealing damage to them but despite emptying several clips into the enemy, they still manage to reach and kill you without dying themselves. What is this character traditionally referred to as?

Answer: Tank

A tank is a type of character--either a player character in a shooter or an enemy in a single player campaign--that can take a great deal of damage without dying. In the four player co-op game "Left 4 Dead", one of the special Infected is simply referred to as a Tank and is easily the hardest of the special Infected to kill.
8. Imagine this: You're playing through a multiplayer campaign with someone online. You're low on health and happen to spot a first aid kit. Before you can get to it however, another player grabs it and uses it even though they are near full health already. This player continues to repeat this throughout the entire campaign purposely making the experience overly difficult and unpleasant for you. What is this style of player traditionally referred to as?

Answer: Griefer

A griefer is a player that purposely tries to annoy and anger other players. This can be managed through a plethora of different methods such as feigned ignorance, teammate killing, preventing players from continuing through the level and the aforementioned health stealing.
9. Imagine this: You are playing a shooter game. A group of enemies are huddled together so you shoot a rocket straight into the crowd. Though the man in the center takes a direct hit from the rocket, those near the explosion also take damage. This is often referred to as ____ damage. What's the missing word?

Answer: Splash

Splash damage occurs when enemies near an explosion of some sort take damage from the blast. Though they are damaged by it, those further away from the explosion will likely survive. This is also known as radius damage.
10. Video game characters can be incredibly powerful, so powerful in fact that it seems that nothing can hurt them. When they do take damage however, it's because enemies have hit that character's what?

Answer: Hitbox

A hitbox is the area in which player characters are programmed to take damage from should something enter it. In the shoot 'em up genre, the hitbox is very important as many games of this genre feature one-hit deaths. Expert shoot 'em up players will have memorized the hitbox space and will perform seemingly death-defying feats when in actuality they are simply maneuvering a small area around enemy fire.
