Question 1 of 10
1. On April 20, 1999, the Columbine school shooting took place in the United States. Politicians and parents' groups looked to violence in video games as a possible reason why this atrocity was committed. The two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, had been known to play violent video games, and since their favorites included games like "Doom" and "Wolfenstein 3D" for PC, many were quick to blame gaming as the cause of the shooting. What genre were these two games? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. By using a special mod (or modification), players of the game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" had the opportunity to access a certain lewd minigame. Since the ESRB rating of the game was only Mature (M), several lawsuits were brought upon Rockstar North, the game's developer, due to the fact that consumers had been misled. The rating was changed to Adults Only 18+ and the makers re-released a version of the game that no longer contained the extra minigame. What was the nickname of the controversy that spawned from this game (which was also the name of the mod itself)? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Sex and violence aren't the only factors that lead to controversy in video games; racism has also been a concern. While the game "Custer's Revenge" for Atari 2600 was actually purchased by a very select few, there was still a huge uproar over its content. The game itself was labeled as an "adult video game cartridge" and couldn't be bought by minors, but the pornographic aspects of the game weren't its main criticisms.

True or false: This game went so far as to depict the rape of a Native American woman by a naked General Custer.

Question 4 of 10
4. On April 20, 2005, and in a twist of morbid irony, Danny Ledonne released the downloadable game "Super Columbine Massacre RPG!". The game went mostly unnoticed until its one year anniversary in 2006, in which a full blown controversy erupted. What was the main reason Ledonne gave for releasing the game? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. In 2002, the Greek government passed Law 3037/2002, an electronic game ban aimed at curbing illegal gambling. Its primary purpose may have been reasonable, but the law went so far as to ban all electronic games from being played in both public atmospheres such as Internet cafés, and on home computers. According to the law, which of the following types of games was NOT banned? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The video games "Ethnic Cleansing" (2002) and "Special Force" (2003) were both released to much criticism (the former receiving much more publicity). The premise of "Ethnic Cleansing" was to run through a ghetto as either a skinhead or a Klansman killing people of other races. "Special Force" was a game devoted to killing Israelis who had invaded Lebanon as a member of the Islamic Resistance. Both games were developed on which open source game engine causing further controversy? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Two separate events were said to have originated with players of this video game series. The first happened on June 7, 2003, when American Devin Moore shot and killed two police officers and a police dispatcher. The officers were arresting him for possession of a stolen vehicle when he grabbed one of the officers' weapons, shot them, and escaped in a police car. His defense was based on his inspiration from the video game.

The second event happened the same month when two teenaged step brothers shot rifles at passing cars on an interstate in Tennessee, killing one man and injuring a woman. They also said they had been inspired by this video game series. Which video game series was it?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. On May 24, 2005, two parents were arrested in South Korea after leaving their four-month old daughter in their apartment while they went and played an enormously popular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) at a nearby Internet café. The infant suffocated to death while they played online for nearly five hours. What famed online game had they been playing? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. A 28-year-old man died in 2005, after he had played the popular real-time strategy game "Starcraft" for nearly fifty hours straight in an Internet café. It was reported that he only stopped to take bathroom breaks and short naps. His friends described him as having a video game addiction, and he lost his job and girlfriend because of his gaming habits. What country, known for its immense fandom of online gaming, was he from? Hint

10. In the U.K. newspaper, "The Guardian", it was reported that the German government banned all video games depicting Nazi imagery or the swastika, as well as those that promote "cruel violence against humans or human-looking characters." However, they do allow the sale and distribution of historically accurate movies that include Nazi symbols and/or violence. According to German lawmakers, what reason is given for this discrepancy? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: First-person shooter

"Doom" and "Wolfenstein 3D" are first-person shooter games in which a single character will travel around a virtual environment, shooting enemies with various weapons collected throughout the game. Due to the violent nature of these games, special interest groups will often condemn and blame video game manufacturers when horrific events take place, especially those in which a gun is involved. One argument is that the killings on the video games are interactively carried out by the players, while in movies and other media, the participants are simply viewing.

Proponents of video games argue that violence in video games does not give the impression that it is okay to do the same in real life. Millions of people around the world play violent video games, yet only a very small percentage of people are likely to act upon any violent impulses. They argue that those who would take active measures against others must have already had psychological problems to begin with.

Answer: Hot Coffee

The mod was available in the PC, X-box, and Playstation 2 versions of the game. Beside the many lawsuits brought upon Rockstar, senators Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, and Evan Bayh introduced the Family Entertainment Protection Act to Congress which was meant to enforce workers to abide by ESRB ratings and give punishment to those who failed to follow these guidelines. Similar laws that were passed in Illinois and Michigan were ruled unconstitutional by Federal judges.

In 2006, the bill died, laying rest to the Hot Coffee controversy.

Answer: True

Considered one of the worst video games ever made, the sad premise of "Custer's Revenge" is to move the nearly-naked General Custer (he does happen to wear a hat, boots, and scarf) across the screen to a Native American woman who is tied to a large cactus.

He must dodge the several arrows (another blantant racist aspect) during the whole ridiculous affair. It was released on October 13, 1982.

Answer: He created it as an "indictment of our society at large" and because he was himself "a misfit," "a loner" and "a bullied kid".

Ledonne felt some sort of connection to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, and was reported to have said, "it was a bit scary, once I learned more about these boys, because it was like I was looking in the mirror and I didn't want the same fate for myself." However, once he saw what they had done, he had "walk[ed] away from that."

The game was free for users to download, however, they were asked to donate one dollar to reduce his costs for running the site. He also tried to remain anonymous for as long as possible until Roger Kovacs, a friend of one of the Columbine victims, revealed his identity. Ledonne did not personally know any of the victims.

Answer: All of these were banned

The ban caused public outrage and cries of censorship were shown across the media. The law was declared unconstitutional in 2002, by a local court in Thessaloniki after three café owners were charged with letting their customers play online chess. They were let off of the charges, but the law remained intact.

According to the BBC, the European Commission became involved and sent an official letter to the Greek Foreign Ministry stating that "some of the crucial stipulations of the law may be in breach of European legislation." The law is nearly impossible to enforce, but there are occasions in which it is, such as the 2004 raid of several Internet cafés in Larissa, Greece.

Answer: Genesis3D

"Ethnic Cleansing" was the more publicized and controversial of the two games. It was developed by Resistance Records, a music label devoted to white supremacist and Neo-Nazi artists. "Special Force" was said to be developed by the terrorist group Hezbollah.

When "Ethnic Cleansing" was released, the Anti-Defamation League lobbied the developers of Genesis3D to prohibit such use of their game engine, but their pleas were unsuccessful.

Answer: Grand Theft Auto

The "Grand Theft Auto" series is well known to incorporate aspects of extreme violence to innocent civilian, police officer, and gangster alike. After the Devin Moore shooting, Attorney Jack Thompson pursued civil lawsuits against the game's maker, Take-Two Interactive. Devin Moore was found guilty and sentenced to death by lethal injection. More lawsuits were filed against Take-Two Interactive and other parties after the Tennessee case.

Answer: World of Warcraft

"World of Warcraft" is the best-selling subscription-based MMORPG of all time, claiming to have 8.5 million players worldwide with nearly three million of those players in China alone. Many psychologists have expressed concern over these types of games saying they are "escapist" and lead to the severest cases of video game addiction.

While there are cases of such behavior, video game proponents argue that these cases are a very small minority.

Answer: South Korea

Video games in South Korea are so popular that some of its most popular celebrities are gamers, and can earn contracts of over $100,000. According to the BBC, nearly thirty percent of the South Korean population is registered for online gaming.

Video game addiction is considered by many in the psychological community as a real problem and can be seriously detrimental to adults as well as teens. In many cases, the addicts stave off real world responsibilities and instead spend the majority of their time playing video games, often over eighty hours a week. There have been several reported cases of gaming addiction, and the Smith & Jones addiction consultants operate a treatment center that help to cure their patients. They treat gaming addiction as if it were any other addiction.
10. In the U.K. newspaper, "The Guardian", it was reported that the German government banned all video games depicting Nazi imagery or the swastika, as well as those that promote "cruel violence against humans or human-looking characters." However, they do allow the sale and distribution of historically accurate movies that include Nazi symbols and/or violence. According to German lawmakers, what reason is given for this discrepancy?

Answer: All of these.

The German ban disallows several video games, most of them violent. Some games that have been disallowed due to the ban on Nazi symbols and violence are: "Medal of Honor", "Call of Duty", "Gears of War", and "Dead Rising". The game "Wolfenstein 3D" was also banned when it first came out.
