Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Probably one of the most popular soccer games, the FIFA Football franchise includes many leagues from around the world in its yearly releases. Which company produced and released the FIFA video games starting in 1993?

Answer: Electronic Arts (EA)

Electronic Arts, an American video game company, produces a variety of different games through its different labels, such as Maxis (property of EA since 1997 and creator of "The Sims") and EA DICE (which produces games like "Battlefield".) One of EA's most popular divisions is EA Sports, which produces game franchises like "Madden NFL" (American football) and "NHL" (hockey.) EA Sports' famous motto that kicks off every game, "it's in the game," is voiced by British journalist Andrew Anthony.

The FIFA video game series began in 1993 with the release of "FIFA International Soccer." The game was the first to have a license from FIFA (the international institution that governs association football) and FIFPro (an organization that represents soccer players of the world.) In addition to the yearly releases, FIFA games also come out when there is a World Cup, the first time being in 1998. The game features several modes of playing, such as Career Mode, Tournament Mode, and a story mode called "The Journey," which premiered in the 2017 edition and follows the journey of the fictional British soccer player Alex Hunter.
2. Which of these football management-simulation games, created by Paul and Oliver Collyer, has an Assistant Manager guiding you through your team selection and requires a Coaching Badge to manage teams like Barcelona and Chelsea?

Answer: Championship Manager

"Championship Manager" was created by British brothers Paul and Oliver Collyer, who founded the company Sports Interactive to be able to develop the game even more. Although the first version was not as successful, but the subsequent "Championship Manager '93" and "Championship Manager 2" sold very well.

The latter featured commentary from British commentator Clive Tyldesley, and was the first in the series to have a selection of leagues to choose from. When Sports Interactive split with publishers Eidos (which kept the original name,) the game "Football Manager", published by Sega, was born.
3. Japanese company Konami released several editions of their game "International Superstar Soccer" from 1994 to 2003. Which of these games was the successful spin-off of ISS and notably had a license for the UEFA Champions League for years?

Answer: Pro Evolution Soccer

"Pro Evolution Soccer" was first released in 2001 for PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The Asian editions of the series were called "World Soccer: Winning Eleven" until 2016, when the title was changed to simply "Winning Eleven" in Japan and "Pro Evolution Soccer" in other Asian countries.

The game has been marketed as "Pro Evolution Soccer" in Europe since it began, and in North America since the 2008 edition. "PES", as the video game is also known, features that its main competitor, EA's FIFA, lacks.

These include the license to the UEFA Champions League, one of the most important tournaments in international club soccer, and a partnership with Spanish club Barcelona, which has resulted in Barcelona players appearing in the cover of the game in 2016, 2017, and 2018, in addition to exclusive access to their stadium, Camp Nou.
4. One of my favorite games when I was younger, "Disney Sports Soccer" was released for Nintendo GameCube and GameBoy in 2002 by Konami. Which of the following networks prominently appeared in the game's intro video, and broadcast all matches played in the game?

Answer: Disney Sports Network

"Disney Sports Soccer" is only one of Disney's sports video games released in 2002, others being "Disney Sports Basketball", "Disney Sports Football", and "Disney Sports Skateboarding". The game features 11 teams whose captains are Disney characters like Mickey Mouse (The Superstars), Minnie Mouse (The Charmers) and Donald Duck (The Seaducks). The teams, music, and even announcer for the Disney Sports Network (voiced by Bob Bergen, known for being the voice of Porky Pig) also appear in the other games mentioned before. Jose Carioca referees all matches, even when he himself is playing as part of The TinyRockets!

The Disney Sports Network logo is one of the first things to appear in Disney Sports Soccer's great introduction, which features all of the characters coming into the field and playing each other. Ahhhh, so much nostalgia!
5. "Sega Soccer Slam" was released by Sega in 2002, and included features like "turbo" and power-ups, in addition to allowing players to punch each other. Which of these teams was NOT included in the game?

Answer: Team Hurricane

"Sega Soccer Slam" was released for GameCube, Xbox and PlayStation 2. The game is a little bit different from other soccer video games, since it includes power-ups such as the killer kick, a shot that is almost impossible for the opposing goalkeeper to stop.

The team names are Toxic, Volta, Subzero, Spirit, Tsunami, and El Fuego, and three extra squads (Robo, Ohm and Love) can be unlocked.
6. "Super __________ Strikers" was released by Nintendo and Next Level Games in 2005, and featured characters of a very well-known franchise. Which Italian plumber completes the name of the video game?

Answer: Mario

"Super Mario Strikers", which was marketed as "Mario Smash Football" in Europe and Australia, was the first game of the Mario franchise to focus on soccer. It follows pretty much the same rules as other soccer games, although there are no referees and therefore fouls are acceptable. A sequel, "Mario Strikers Charged", also includes Super Abilities, such as Mario and Luigi growing and Princess Peach being able to freeze other players.

The character of Mario, an Italian plumber who wears a red hat and blue jumpsuit, was created by video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, and has been featured in multiple games, such as Mario Kart and Super Mario.
7. The FIFA franchise has also occasionally released games that rather than providing traditional soccer, focus on freestyle football, which has less rules than regular soccer. Which word, which might remind you of driving, completes the title of the video game, "FIFA _____"?

Answer: Street

"FIFA Street" was first released in 2005 by Electronic Arts and its division EA Sports. The game is different from the regular FIFA games in that matches are not played in traditional soccer stadiums, but in more casual venues like basketball courts and caged street courts. Ronaldinho was featured on the first cover in 2005; Cristiano Ronaldo in 2006; then Ronaldinho again alongside Peter Crouch and Gennaro Gattuso in 2008, and Lionel Messi when the game was brought back in 2012.
8. Which of these games, part of a larger sports video games series developed by Humongous Entertainment, featured tournaments such as the "Off-The-Wall Indoor Invitational" and the "Astonishingly Shiny Cup of All Cups Tournament"?

Answer: Backyard Soccer

"Backyard Soccer" was first released in 1998 by Humongous Entertainment, Infogrames and Runecraft. The games are known for featuring children and child-like versions of real athletes. Some of these other games are "Backyard Baseball", "Backyard Football" and "Backyard Hockey".

This soccer game, similar to its "Backyard" counterparts, contains power-ups that players can use, such as the "Cannon" and "Bowling Ball". Some of the characters included in the game are Pablo Sanchez, Kiesha Phillips, and Achmed and Amir Khan.

The "Astonishingly Shiny Cup of All Cups Tournament" is the most important tournament in the game, and is meant to represent the FIFA World Cup, the most valuable tournament in association football.
9. The video game "LiberoGrande", released by Namco in the late 1990s, features fictional versions of real players with only their initials unchanged. Is this true or false?

Answer: True

"LiberoGrande" was developed by Japanese company Namco, which became Bandai Namco Entertainment in 2006. It was an arcade football game where players are able to choose a "star player", which is a fictionalized version of real athletes like Zinedine Zidane (Zenon Zadkine), Romario (Roland), and Alan Shearer (Alfred Shaffer). The game had a sequel titled "LiberoGrande 2".
10. Which of these video games about football/soccer was published by Ubisoft in 2010 and features English player Steven Gerrard on its cover?

Answer: Pure Football

"Pure Football" was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox, by French company Ubisoft. It was not as well-received by the public, mainly because of its lack of game modes. The game featured seventeen international teams, and had no referees.
