Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why, in 2010, did the video game "Call of Duty: Black Ops" cause some controversy in Cuba?

Answer: One scenario depicted the assassination of Fidel Castro

The makers got around that by ensuring that it was actually a double of the Communist country's first president who got shot. The first "Call Of Duty" game was released in 2003 and spawned a series of follow-ups.
2. It's one of the most famous video game franchises ever, yet in September 2008 the US Supreme Court banned a special edition of "The Sims: Vote for Change" because of fears it would prejudice that year's Presidential elections.

Answer: False

At least to that point, no video game had ever been banned in the USA. The powers-that-be may not have liked some, but the principle of Freedom of Expression won out.
3. In 1999, a video game called "Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines" was banned in Germany. What caused the authorities to get upset?

Answer: It contained references to the Nazi regime

Memories or references to the Third Reich traditionally caused many problems in Germany in all walks of life and culture. Released in 1998, "Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines" called on players to take on roles in a small commando unit working behind enemy lines in WW2.
4. The Government of the Peoples' Republic of China was traditionally a touchy one. Why did it initially ban "Football Manager 2005"?

Answer: The game depicted Tibet as an independent country

Later, an amended version of the game was allowed. The PRC also banned "Command & Conquer: Generals" for "smearing the image of China and the Chinese army". In "Football Manager 2005" (as well as its predecessors and successors) players took on the role of a football (soccer) team manager and had to decide on tactics and player selection to get the best out of their teams.
5. "Grand Theft Auto" was a popular video game franchise worldwide. Why was "Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City" banned in Brazil?

Answer: It used the music of a Brazilian composer without permission

The Brazilian authorities garnered quite a reputation for banning video games for "high impact violence". Among examples were "Postal" (first released in 1997); "Mortal Kombat" (1993) and "Carmageddon" (1997). "Carmageddon" was also initially refused a licence in the UK.

The first GTA was released in 1997. Players took on the role of a car thief tasked to carry out - and get away with - various crimes.
6. In February 2010, a video game for the Playstation 3 console called "Heavy Rain" was released worldwide, but why was it banned in Saudi Arabia?

Answer: It showed scenes of nudity

The Middle East country also banned "The Godfather" (2006) for scenes of violence and sexual activity. Meanwhile Pokémon cards, but not the video series, were banned for "promoting Zionism". The game featured the hunt to track down and expose a serial killer.
7. The British Board of Film Classification is responsible for classifying video games as well as movies in the UK. Which of these games was refused a classification in 2007 for its "unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying"?

Answer: Manhunt 2

The game was also banned in Ireland. Four years earlier, the original "Manhunt" game received an 18 classification, meaning it was deemed suitable for adults only. The BBFC, said: "Manhunt 2" is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone. "Manhunt 2" featured a hero who had to kill a host of enemies before they killed him.
"There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game." [Source: BBC Online, June 19 2007].
Various challenges meant the producers had to make changes to get a classification
8. Why was the Playstation game "Fallout 3" banned in India?

Answer: It depicted a two-headed cow

The cow is, of course, regarded as holy in India. The game allowed players to blow up a town with nuclear weapons.
9. The video game world was forced to draw breath in 2009 when the Government of Venezuela announced it planned to ban ALL video games of a certain genre. What was that?

Answer: Games that allowed players to "shoot" people

A large number of games were subsequently destroyed. Meanwhile, Australia was a serial banner of games that had a high violence or sexual content.
10. In an example of life imitating art, which video games series was banned in Thailand after a scene was reenacted and led to the death of an innocent person?

Answer: Grand Theft Auto

In 2008, a 19-year-old player of "Grand Theft Auto" killed a taxi driver in an incident that was deemed by the authorities to have been copied from the gameplay. Thailand also banned games that had a sexual content.
