Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which game did players meet an angara for the first time?

Answer: Mass Effect: Andromeda

The angara were one of two new sentient species introduced in the Andromeda galaxy, with the other being the kett. The angara were weary of new species, but ultimately friendly, with one even joining the player's squad. The kett, on the other hand, were much more hostile, and were the primary antagonists of the main plot.
2. In which game did players meet a turian for the first time?

Answer: Mass Effect (1)

As the first game in the series, "Mass Effect" introduced players to the most new species. Not only were turians one of them, but they were the first non-human species seen by players. Nihlus was a turian Spectre on the Normandy amidst a human crew.
3. In which game did players meet a drell for the first time?

Answer: Mass Effect 2

The drell were one of the new species introduced in "Mass Effect 2", with Thane being the drell in the player's squad. Despite being a new species, only two were seen in the main game: Thane, and his son Kolyat. The drell Feron also made an appearance in "The Lair of the Shadow Broker" downloadable content for "Mass Effect 2".
4. In which game did players have a geth squad member?

Answer: Mass Effect 2

The final squad member for players to recruit in "Mass Effect 2" was Legion. The geth were primary antagonists in the first game, and were still all hostile in the second. To come across a geth that did not try to kill the player was interesting. One that wanted to work with the player was astonishing. Legion was also the only squad member (after the first two) to not have a special recruitment mission.

It was part of a regular story mission, meaning players had no idea they were getting a new squad member until the end.
5. In which games did players take control of a character other than Shepard?

Answer: Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda

The first three games followed the story of Shepard, with players able to import their save files between games. "Mass Effect: Andromeda" was the beginning of a new story, with new characters. Players took on the role of Ryder, who was an explorer, instead of a soldier.

Briefly, in "Mass Effect 2", players took control of the Normandy's pilot, Joker, when the ship was attacked. When Shepard and the rest of the squad were away, Joker had to unshackle the AI to save the ship.
6. In which game did players set foot on Earth?

Answer: Mass Effect 3

"Mass Effect 3" began and ended on Earth. Interestingly, no other installment showed what Earth was like in the year 2183, though there were codex entries. In the first two games, players could travel to the Sol system and inspect the planet, but not actually land. In the first game, players could even set foot on the moon to deal with a rogue virtual intelligence.
7. In which games did players travel to the krogan homeworld, Tuchanka?

Answer: Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3

Tuchanka was the first homeworld to be visited in the "Mass Effect" series. Players traveled there in "Mass Effect 2" for the loyalty missions of Grunt and Mordin. In "Mass Effect 3", players returned to Tuchanka to cure the Genophage (or not) and secure krogan support against the Reapers.
8. In which games did players control a wheeled vehicle for exploration?

Answer: Mass Effect (1) and Mass Effect: Andromeda

The Mako vehicle of "Mass Effect" was not well loved by the fan base. It had difficult controls, but had inexplicable ability to climb incredibly steep hills, and take a sever beating by falling from incredible heights. On the plus side, it had a really powerful, pinpoint accurate cannon mounted on top.

The Mako and large exploration elements were largely dropped in the next two titles. "Mass Effect: Andromeda" took note of "Dragon Age: Inquisition" (the previous Bioware title) and brought back large open areas to explore. Players were given the six-wheeled Nomad for exploring the new worlds of the Andromeda galaxy. Unlike the Mako, the Nomad had more trouble climbing hills, and did not have any offensive capabilities.
9. In which game did players fight Kai Leng?

Answer: Mass Effect 3

One of the least-popular inclusions in "Mass Effect 3" was the villain Kai Leng. Leng was a henchman for the Illusive Man, and originally appeared in the "Mass Effect" novels. Kai Leng used a sword when fighting, and functioned like a stronger version of the Phantom enemy.
10. In which games did players fight a thresher maw?

Answer: Mass Effect (1) and Mass Effect 2

Thresher Maws were large worm-like creatures that could be found on a few of the optional worlds in the first game. They could use massive claws or acidic spit to attack, and would move around underground to attack the player. They were meant to be fought using the Mako vehicle, but clever players would hop out at the last moment to kill a Thresher Maw on foot. Enemies killed while in the Mako only yielded half the experience points.

In "Mass Effect 2", Grunt's loyalty mission was to kill a single Thresher Maw while on foot.

"Mass Effect 3" had Kalros, the mother of all Threshers, but players didn't have to fight her. Instead, they lured her into fighting a Reaper for them.
11. In which games did players fight Cerberus troops?

Answer: Mass Effect (1) and Mass Effect 3

Cerberus were a minor, hostile faction that appeared in a few side quests in the first game. They were never meant to play such an important role in the series. In the second game, they were elevated, being the group that brought Shepard back to life.

As the player's employer for the second game, they were never fought, though players could still be verbally confrontational with members. In the third game, they became one of the two primary enemy factions players fought (the other being the Reapers).
12. In which game did players fight the Collectors?

Answer: Mass Effect 2

After the first game set up the Reapers and the geth as primary antagonists, players were a bit confused whena brand new, seemingly unrelated enemy was introduced for the sequel. The Collectors were a mysterious race that were abducting human colonists. Players later learned that the Collectors were former protheans, the dominant species in the previous cycle, corrupted by the Reapers.
13. In which game did players fight the Saren Arterius?

Answer: Mass Effect (1)

Saren Arterius was a turian Spectre and the antagonist of the first game. Players had to first prove his treachery, and then track him down. It wasn't until the end that players discovered that Saren was actually being corrupted and controlled my a much more sinister threat, the Reapers.
14. In which game could players use personal jump jets to move around?

Answer: Mass Effect: Andromeda

In 2014, "Dragon Age: Inquisition" was a big step for Bioware. While characters like Mario had been jumping since their first incarnations, this was the first time a character could properly jump in a Bioware game. The jumping was useful in the more open-ended map design Bioware built in "Inquisition". "Mass Effect: Andromeda" followed a similar design principle, but instead of regular jumping, players had access to jump jets that would let them scramble up buildings and ledges with ease.
15. Which games had an optional co-operative multiplayer mode?

Answer: Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda

The nature of the different classes and abilities would have made a competitive multiplayer difficult to implement. However, the base game was already designed around a cooperative squad gameplay style. In "Mass Effect 3", Bioware included a multiplayer component for the first time, in which up to four players could fight successive waves of enemies. It could affect the single-player component of the game, but was not required. Some fans were skeptical about multiplayer, and felt that the time and resources should have been spent to create more single-player content. On release, however, multiplayer was a very well received.

In "Mass Effect: Andromeda", four-player co-operative multiplayer made a return, with new maps to take advantage of players' jump jets, and new weapons and abilities.
