Answer: Pigs

The first game in the title was released in December 2009, using pigs as the enemies due to the prominent swine flu epidemic at the time. In this mainstream mobile puzzle game, players used a slingshot to propel a limited number of birds per level into pigs or their structures.

The success of the title launched a franchise including titles such as 'Angry Birds Rio', 'Angry Birds Friends' and 'Angry Birds Epic'.

Answer: Breath of the Wild

'Breath of the Wild' was a massive open-world 2017 action-adventure game in the 'Legend of Zelda' series. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi stated in an IGN interview that the action of petting a dog wouldn't have fitted with the design philosophy since the game used small numbers of actions in interlocking systems as opposed to specific custom actions. Nonetheless, players can bond with dogs by standing near them or feeding them, which encourages them to lead Link to buried treasure.

Answer: Bird

The canonical chocobo is a large, generally flightless, yellow bird with a big yellow beak. They usually aren't main characters in the series but have appeared in almost every game in the series. In 'Final Fantasy VII', players could breed chocobos to reach inaccessible points on the world map as well as race with them, whereas in 'Final Fantasy IX' the Chocobo Hot and Cold minigame could open up rare and unique treasures.

Answer: Dragon Age: Origins

This was one of the first mainstream titles to use a relationship mechanic with choice-based decisions to permanently influence the plot. In the dog's case, his approval rating is permanently maxed out if the player chooses to accept him, though he'll happily eat any bones the player can find. That can be useful if the player wants to do something that might offend other characters!

Answer: Donkey Kong

In most instances, the 'Donkey Kong' games were platformers and Enguarde was one of the allies Donkey Kong could use to help get through different stages. Enguarde was typically useful for three reasons: he could swim more quickly than the Kongs, he could stab a range of enemies that the Kongs would otherwise have to avoid, and in some titles he could use Superstab to open up bonus rooms.

Answer: Lara Croft

Lara Croft was instead the human protagonist of the long-standing 'Tomb Raider' series. Fox McCloud, also known as Star Fox, is the leader of his team who join him on many space missions as wingmen. Many of the titles are considered rail shooters where the vehicle is driven down a linear path with only a limited degree of control of direction.

Answer: Role-playing game

These are GameArts titles: Outside of Japan 'Grandia' debuted on the PlayStation in 1999 whereas 'Grandia II' came to the Dreamcast in 2000 for the USA and in 2001 for Europe. Although these games are part of the same series, they are separate and stand-alone titles.

However, both games enabled the use of mascot companions in battle - both Sue and Ryudo had special attacks featuring their respective friends.

Answer: Hedgehog

We are of course talking about the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' series here. As his name suggests, Sonic is a very fast moving anthropomorphic hedgehog who can also roll up into a ball to attack his enemies. Where Sonic has a brotherly and supportive relationship with Tails, he has a much more love-hate relationship with the choleric Knuckles, though they usually come together when it counts.

Answer: Animal Crossing: New Leaf

'New Leaf' was the fourth title in the main series. Typically, the player finds themselves in a rural village with anthropomorphic animals where they live and... well, do whatever they want to, really. In 'New Leaf', the player becomes the mayor by accident and although mayoral duties are optional the player can raise money for public service projects as well as pass laws to encourage particular behaviours.

Answer: Jak

In the first title, 'The Precursor Legacy', Daxter is knocked into a dark eco silo and turned into the ottsel. Although there's a desire to return to human form, Daxter comes to accept his new body as he joins Jak in his adventures, who does most of the heavy lifting in the series in practice.

Answer: Kung Fu

'Karate Panda' kind of works... but, alas, no. 'Kung Fu Panda' was a children's game based on the popular DreamWorks animated movie also released in 2008. Unlike in the movie, Po has a certain degree of martial arts skills from the off. He also uses skills of jumping and balance in his quest to deprive antagonist Tai Lung from access to the Dragon Scroll, a source of supreme power.

Answer: Lemmings

This title was first published for the Amiga in 1991. In each level, a certain number of lemmings would be dropped from a trap-door, and the player would have to create a safe path to the exit without letting them walk into disaster. According to an 'Amiga Power' article, it was the first game to use the indirect control concept, which was eventually a core feature of real-time strategy games like 'Warcraft: Orcs & Humans'.

Answer: Final Fantasy

All are Square Enix titles other than 'Half Life', but 'Final Fantasy' is where the moogles lie. These creatures are somewhat diminutive white fluffy imps often depicted with a big red nose and a red bobble that hangs off of an antenna. In 'Final Fantasy IX', a running sidequest involved taking mail from moogle to moogle, adding a sense of texture to the world as the moogles would comment on different events happening in the world at the time.

Answer: Banjo-Kazooie

Banjo the bear and Kazooie the bird met many friends on their journeys. Who could forget Gobi the camel, Bottles the mole and Loggo the toilet? Okay... maybe we'd all rather forget about Loggo. In any case, the Jiggies were jigsaw pieces that could be used to unlock different levels, ultimately in the aim of confronting the pantomime rhyming witch Gruntilda and taking Banjo's sister Tooty back home.

Answer: Ostrich

Unlike Enguarde, Expresso wasn't used very frequently aside from in the original 'Donkey Kong Country' platformer title. He was an ostrich who wore trainers and ran very, very quickly as well as being able to take long jumps using his wings to hover and slow the fall down.

His main drawback was that he couldn't attack enemies whatsoever, which also meant he couldn't reveal hidden wall bonus rooms either.

Answer: Detective

Unlike the normal 'Pokémon' games, 'Detective Pikachu' is a narrative based game which is comparable to the 'Ace Attorney' games. For once, this Pikachu can actually talk, although only the protagonist Tim Goodman can seem to understand him. It quickly transpires that Tim's missing father and Pikachu's amnesia seem to have a connection, so they work together to figure out what's happening. Due to the game's relative ease and simplicity, some critics believed it would be better as a film... and, well, that actually happened, and it was a success at the box office.

Answer: Rexxar

The basic idea behind 'Heroes of the Storm' was to take the popular fan-favourites in Blizzard franchises, as Nintendo did with 'Super Smash Bros.', and put them in a 5v5 hero brawler. Some fans in the community nicknamed Rexxar after his bear Misha as much of his functionality was tied into the bear.

Her area stun was one of the characters strongest abilities, compensated by his vulnerability to dive heroes and his relatively mediocre damage.

Answer: Super Metroid

In the introduction to the action-adventure game 'Super Metroid', the last Metroid that had imprinted on Samus in 'Metroid II: Return of Samus' was stolen from a study colony by the space pirate Ridley. There is no dialogue and no human friends to be made on the eerie Zebes, but some friendly creatures do act as a tutorial device showing Samus how to wall jump and charge jump, amongst other things.

In an interview with director Yoshio Sakamoto and composer Kenji Yamamoto to promote the SNES Classic Edition, they actively recommended saving the creatures in the end sequence and said that a single extra dot of light can be seen leaving the planet when Samus leaves, a sign that they've survived.

Answer: Sony

He's also known as the Sony Cat, but this fits better with 'T'. He has made an appearance as a playable character in 'PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale' - amongst others - a fighting game very similar to 'Super Smash Bros.'. He has a black cat-like friend, Kuro, and he often acts like a human despite not actually being one.

Answer: Untitled Goose Game

The title almost sounds made up, but it is real: it was a placeholder title that somehow stuck. 'Untitled Goose Game' was a short but quaint game developed by House House and published by Panic. Players can basically troll and harass the denizens of a quaint English village, and although critics admitted the game lacked mechanical depth and replay value there was a general consensus that it was a fun few hours for what it was.

Answer: Venusaur

The 'LeafGreen' and 'FireRed' games were 2004 releases of remakes of 'Pokémon Green' and 'Red' respectively. As these were first generation games, it made sense that they used the final evolution stage Pokémon for the starters Bulbasaur and Charmander in the main artwork for those games. Venusaur was a giant dinosaur-like pokemon with a huge rafflesia-like flower on its back, described as taking in sunlight in many iterations of the Pokédex computer.

Answer: World of Warcraft

You knew it was coming. These classes (and specialisations) all could have permanent pets, but there were some temporary pets that others could use as well. If that weren't enough, pet battles were introduced in the 'Mists of Pandaria' expansion where people could essentially play Pokémon by training and battling miniature versions of enemies they'd meet in the world.

There were also some non-combat pets that collectors and people who like cute things could obtain, too.

Answer: Pokémon

Since the 'Pokémon' creators had gone through a number of colours, metals and gems, it was only to be expected that a few nomenclatural Pokéballs might eventually be thrown. As ever, some Pokémon are exclusive to one game over the other, so as to encourage trading. According to Game Freak director Junichi Masuda, the 'X' and 'Y' refer to graph axes where there will always be an intersection at some point; everyone may think differently but we also inevitably have many overlaps in experience too.

Answer: Dinosaur

Mario often rides Yoshi, so that could be inconvenient if he were an ant. Then again, if Mario were smaller than an ant... who knows? He first appears in 1990's 'Super Mario World' as a happy green dinosaur who helps Mario out after he breaks him free from an egg.

He has different skills depending on his colour, and can use his long tongue to pull certain objects in his mouth to hold or swallow. In 'Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island' he can also use eggs as a projectile weapon.

Answer: Zoo Tycoon

Essentially, the idea is to create a profitable venture, so both human and animal welfare matter in this zoo simulator title. If the animals are mistreated, they can injure their owners, and will take the opportunity to escape if offered. Two expansion packs for the game, 'Dinosaur Digs' and 'Marine Mania', were released, giving players the opportunity to experience a prehistoric or aquarium-oriented spin on the game.
