Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My first signal flag represents the phonetic letter that takes its name from a nymph of Greek myth who was cursed to repeat only the last word that had been spoken. Which phonetic name does it bear?

Answer: Echo

The 'E' or 'Echo' flag is used to inform other vessels in your vicinity that you are altering your course to a starboard heading, or that the crew of your vessel are having their mealtime.
2. The next letter that I select takes its phonetic name from a month toward the end of the year, and which was named for its position in the old Roman calendar. Which month could this be?

Answer: November

The chequer-patterned blue and white flag represents the letter 'N', which has the phonetic name 'November'. In the ancient Roman calendar, November was the ninth month, and thus took its name from the Latin "novem", meaning "ninth".
3. Our third flag shares its name with a Shakespearean character; the female protagonist and youngest member of Shakespeare's Capulet family. Which female name does this flag bear?

Answer: Juliet

Any isolated display of the 'J' or 'Juliet' must be taken very seriously indeed. Under the International Code of Signals, or ICS, the display of this flag is conveying that the vessel is on fire and that it is carrying or leaking a dangerous cargo and that other vessels must stay well clear.
4. This next flag shares its name with a great Irish literary genius and a character known to be something of a 'grouch'. By which phonetic name is this flag known?

Answer: Oscar

The 'O' or 'Oscar' flag is used to signify that the vessel flying it has a man overboard and that it is in the process of recovery. This flag was also used in the past to send messages using the semaphore system. The character Oscar the Grouch appears in "Sesame Street", and shares his name with the Irish writer Oscar Wilde.
5. My next selection is a brightly coloured flag which shares its name with the slang moniker by which the citizens of the United States are known all over the world. Which phonetic letter does this flag represent?

Answer: Yankee

Under ICS, the International Code of Signals, a ship displaying the flag 'Y' or 'Yankee' is instructing others in their proximity that 'I am dragging my anchor'. Within the United States, the term "Yankee" usually refers to inhabitants of the Northern states, although this distinction isn't generally applied outside the US.
6. If I hoist this flag next, I am intending to represent the letter 'D' or 'Delta'. True or false?

Answer: False

No, on this occasion I shall be hoisting the 'F' or 'Foxtrot' flag. When used by civilian vessels the message conveyed by this flag is that 'My vessel is disabled, communicate with me'. If I had been serving on board one of Her Majesty's warships (more specifically an aircraft carrier), I would fly this flag as a warning to other vessels in the area on those occasions when 'Flying operations are under way'.
7. Next is a red and white quartered flag, which is named for something worn by a police officer, a pilot, and me! When flying it warns other ships that they are heading towards danger of some form or another. How is this letter represented in the phonetic alphabet?

Answer: Uniform

When flown from a merchant or civilian vessel, the 'U' or 'Uniform' flag warns other ships that they are heading towards danger. When the 'Uniform' flag is being flown by a naval vessel, it signifies that this ship is about to drop anchor.
8. Which flag is next? It has already made an appearance earlier in my message and is blue and white in colour. What response does it convey when flown from a vessel?

Answer: Negative

When used outside of the ICS system (usually by warships), the 'N' or 'November' flag can also signal that 'Your movements are not understood and no visual watch is being kept'. If this flag is flown at the beginning of a message and in conjunction with the red and white 'Answer' pennant, then any following message should be read in a negative context and any message preceded by the 'C' or 'Charlie' flag and 'Answer' pennant should be read in a positive context.
9. You might at first mistake this one for the national flag of France, but in fact it shares its name with an erotic and passionate dance from another country - Argentina. Which phonetic alphabet flag have I hoisted in my message to you?

Answer: Tango

The main difference between them is that the French flag has its blue field at the hoist (on the left as pictured), whereas 'Tango' has its red field at the hoist. The 'Tango' or 'T' flag is predominantly used by pairs of fishing vessels to warn other shipping in the vicinity that they are to 'Keep clear, we are engaged in pair trawling'.
10. This flag shares its name with a Shakespearean character described as a male 'star crossed lover', a member of the Montague family. By what name is this letter represented phonetically?

Answer: Romeo

The 'Romeo' flag represents the letter 'R' and conveys the message 'The way is off my ship' when used in a civil context. When used within NATO naval forces and dependant on its location when hoisted on a ship's mast, the 'R' flag will give an observer an indication as to whether a ship is ready to receive re-supply or give replenishment to another whilst at sea.
11. To which large and populous Asian country would my ship need to sail in order to reveal this flag's phonetic title?

Answer: India

This yellow and black flag represents the letter 'I' or 'India', in the phonetic alphabet. Any vessel displaying this flag would be 'altering its course to port'.
12. The next flag in our sequence could be named for the Greek goddess Nike, and is similar to one of the constituent parts of the flag of the United Kingdom. 'To be sure', how is this letter represented phonetically?

Answer: Victor

This flag, 'V' or 'Victor', is almost identical to the red saltire cross of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Any vessel displaying the 'V' or 'Victor' flag is signalling a 'request for assistance'.
13. I have needed to select a duplicated flag for the second time in my message! This yellow and black flag represents this repeated letter, but what directional instruction would it give if displayed alone?

Answer: I am altering my course to port

In many cases repeated letters would be replaced with special flags which are of a triangular shape known as a 'fanion'. This letter, as it lies outside of the first four letters of the message, would not normally be represented by a 'repeater flag' or a 'substitute flag', but would be signalled using the correct flag, in this instance and for the second time in this message, the 'I' or 'India' flag.
14. This flag is a different shape from the all of the others. My assistant says "There are two flags here; this blue and white one and this red flag". "Put the red one away, it's the blue and white that we need" I say. Commonly used with the Greek word 'omega' in a popular expression, which of the following phonetic letters does this flag, the last in this message to be hoisted, signify?

Answer: Alpha

One of only two of this shape in use as an International Maritime Signal Flag, the shape of this flag is known as a 'swallowtail'. The flag in question here represents the letter 'A' or 'Alpha' and conveys the ICS message that any vessel displaying it has a diver in close proximity.

In the United States vessels also fly a red flag with a white diagonal stripe which conveys the same message under that country's system although many will fly both versions of this flag at the same time. The other 'swallowtail' shaped flag in use represents the letter 'B' or 'Bravo', is a uniform red in colour and signals that the vessel flying it is carrying, loading or discharging a dangerous cargo.
15. I'll tell you what this last flag means - it means 'answer'. So can you answer one last question? As the signal officer of the other ship, could you understand the letters of my message? If so, you should be able to spell (using the initial letters of each answer) what you do when you log on to your favourite website!

Answer: enjoy funtrivia

Well, did you understand the message? Of course not... You're all below decks playing on your favourite website! Each and every one of the International Maritime Signal Flags can represent a letter of the alphabet as well as a message under the International Code of Signals, often referred to as the ICS.

In addition to the twenty six 'letter' flags, there are also flags for each numeral from zero to nine, the 'Answer' pennant and a series of three (sometimes four) triangular 'substitute' or 'repeater' flags. These flags are used as substitutes for letters that are duplicated in a word or message. As there are only four of these 'substitute' or 'repeater' flags available for use, it is inevitable that in most messages there will be a certain amount of flag duplication as well.
