Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A. This country is considered by many to be the oldest nation to accept Christianity as its official religion. Bordering this country is Nakhchivan, an exclave of another country. That country has no current diplomatic ties to this country because of an ongoing feud involving the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite being outside the modern borders of this nation, Mount Ararat has cultural significance to the people of this country. Name this country whose capital is Yerevan and suffered a genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

Answer: Armenia

The entire region of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia as well as a bit of Russia and Iran is known as the Caucasus. This is where the word Caucasian comes from.

Nakhichivan is an exclave of Azerbaijan.

This situation with Nagorno-Karabakh is complicated. Basically put, there is a large Armenian population situated in Nagorno-Karabakh which is entirely surrounded by Azerbaijan and is recognized as part of Azerbaijan by the international community with the exception of Armenia. A 6-year war was fought over the region as Armenia also claims that territory. In the modern day, there is a ceasefire that is present between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the area. It should also be noted that there is support by some (including a few US States such as Michigan) for Nagorno Karabakh (known as the Republic of Artsakh) to have independence from both nations.
2. B. The single largest loss of life not related to direct conflict in naval history occurred when the USS Cyclops went missing over this body of water. Methane eruptions are theorized to be common in this body of water though there is no evidence supporting this theory. This body of water is feared by many for its reputation of messing with compasses and other anomalies. Name this body of water which Flight 19 disappeared over and which is located between Miami, Puerto Rico, and a namesake island.

Answer: Bermuda Triangle

Flight 19 went missing while it was on a training mission. Failures of compasses were reported by the aircraft while attempting to travel west to reach Florida. The commander may have believed that he was in or around Key West. Eventually, in the midst of all the confusion, the planes disappeared. One scenario is that they fell into the ocean after running out of fuel, however, there are reports of a mid-air explosion being sighted around the area.
3. C. Large deposits of copper ore made this island extremely valuable in ancient times due to it housing one of the two materials needed to make bronze. In fact, the word copper derives from this island. The exclaves of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are British Overseas Territories on this island which is divided into two by the Green Line (aka the Attila Line). The Northern part of this island is recognized as sovereign only by Turkey while the southern part is supported by Greece and is recognized internationally as controlling the entire island. Name this island whose capital is Nicosia and which contains the Karpass Peninsula.

Answer: Cyprus

The Hittites, in ancient times, had control over Cyprus along with several tin deposits. Tin was a rare metal that can be combined with copper to form bronze. In some areas, tin was as rare as gold. By controlling the tin mines in the area as well as the copper mines in Cyprus, the Hittites became a more renowned power at the time due to their ability to create bronze which was used in trade as well as in weapon and armor manufacturing.

The word copper derives from the Late Latin word cuprum which derives from the Latin words cyprium aes or Cyprus metal.

It should also be noted that the word copper may have also originated from the Greek word Kupros which refers to the island of Cyprus.
4. D. One of these objects is known as the 26th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and it is one of the largest of these objects to ever be mined in Russia. Mount Kumgang in North Korea is known as [object] Mountain and has been at the center of many Korean artworks in the past. A "cursed" one of this object is on display at the Smithsonian while another, known as the Cullinan, is the largest gem quality gemstone of this type and was found in South Africa. Name this carbon object which is monopolized by De Beers.

Answer: Diamond

In terms of diamond production, Russia mines the largest amount of diamonds in the world. Australia comes in second and its famous Argyle mine produces around 90% of the worlds pink diamonds. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Botswana are next on the list.

The oddly-named diamond "26th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union" was discovered in December 1980, and named in honor of the forthcoming Communist Party Congress. That's communism for you.
5. E. The flag of American Samoa features this animal carrying a war club and a fly-whisk. The flag of Egypt as well as the coat of arms of Egypt, Iraq, and Palestine features this animal which is known as the [animal] of Saladin. Underneath the sun in the flag of Kazakhstan shows this animal, highlighted in a golden color, flying while the flag of Mexico has this animal eating a snake while sitting on a cactus. Name this animal which is featured on the flags of Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, and Zambia.

Name this overseas territory which gives its colonizer borders with Brazil and Suriname.

Answer: French Guiana

Due to owning French Guiana, France borders both Suriname and Brazil in addition to the countries it borders in Europe. Additionally, it splits up the island of Saint Martin in the Caribbean which it shares with the Netherlands.
7. G. An instance of a Protoceratops fighting a Velociraptor has been shown in fossils found in this area. Other dinosaur fossils found in this area include Tarbosaurus and Oviraptor. Many of these fossils were found in the Nemegt Basin which is called the "Valley of the Dragons." A death worm which is said to generate electricity and spit acid from a distance is said to live in this desert. Name this desert where one can find Bactrian Camels and Jerboa and is located within two nations, one of which is the least densely populated country in the world while the other is the most populated country in the world.

Answer: Gobi

The Gobi Desert is famous for its dinosaur fossils, dinosaur eggs, and even several footprints that have been found in the area.

Mongolia is the least densely populated nation in the world due to its large area and small population.

China is the most populated country in the world.

The Mongolian Death Worm is a cryptid (a creature that is claimed to exist by some, but whose existence has not been proven by science; another example is Bigfoot). It is said to live in the Gobi Desert, and has been described as a giant carnivorous worm which has the ability to spit acid and can discharge electricity to kill its victims. Believe that if you will.

Jerboa are hopping rodents that can be found in deserts. Bactrian camels are the rarer relatives of the dromedary camel and are distinctive in the fact that they have two humps instead of one.
8. H. Sir Halford Mackinder's Theory about this states that whoever controls Eastern Europe and Central Asia would control the globe. Within the United States, this term is used to describe several states including Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming and other states typically in the Midwest. The second group was the offshore islands which included Britain and Japan. Finally, there was the periphery or the outlying islands which included the Americas and Australia.Antarctica was not included.

The main premise of the theory is the idea that anyone who controls the "heartland" which is Central Asia and Eastern Europe has the power and the means to rule the world. This theory does not take into Navy power into account. It should also be noted that this theory may have helped inspire the idea of a German conquest of a large portion of Eastern Europe during World War II
9. I. In the book "Journey to the Center of the Earth", Jules Verne's characters find the entrance to the center of the world by entering Snaefellsjökull, which is a volcano in this country. Surtsey, an island created by an underwater volcano in the 1960s, is claimed by this country. Name this country whose capital is Reykjavik.

Answer: Iceland

Iceland's Vatnajökull glacier is also known as the water glacier. It is one of the largest glaciers in Europe and the largest one in Iceland. It is about the size of Puerto Rico.

Surtsey's creation is seen by many as having a large benefit to the scientific community. It is due to this first-hand experience of island creation being witnessed that scientists have been able to determine how islands are formed as well as how islands obtain life after being created.
10. J. According to the Bible, Naaman was told to dip his head seven time in this river in order to cure his Leprosy. This river is the place where Jesus was baptized and was where the Israelites crossed into the promised land. Flowing into the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea is this river which shares its name with a bordering nation which contains the ancient city of Petra. Name this river which flows through a rift valley of the same name and is bordered by Israel.

Answer: Jordan River

The Jordan River is the site of many important events in the Bible. For instance, when the Israelites began dividing up the land between them in Canaan. Three tribes, Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh decided to settle on one side of the Jordan River due to having settled there. This was met with conflict by the other tribes until the three tribes promised to support the rest of the Israelites in their wars against the Canaanites and only settle once all the land had been taken.

Naaman was an Aramean general who suffered from Leprosy. One day, he was told by his servant girl, a captive from Israel, that a prophet in Israel known as Elijah could heal him. Upon arriving, he was told by Elisha to dip his head into the Jordan River 7 times in order to be cleaned. Naaman refused to do this initially as he felt that there were better rivers and that he had expected Elisha to come out and do a magical ritual of some sort. He moves to go back, but his servant convinces him to do it saying that if the prophet had asked him to do some other great task then Naaman would have done it. Therefore, why should he be upset about having to dump his head in a river a few times which was much easier. He did this and was cured. He comes back offering items of value to Elisha who refuses them. When seeing that Elisha will not accept it, he asks Elisha that he ask God to forgive Naaman he is forced to bow down in an idol temple by his king who relies on him for support. He also asks that he be given Israeli soil in order to worship God. Elisha agrees. Later, a servant of Elisha, rushes up to Naaman while he is on his way back and claims that Elisha changed his mind about receiving the gifts despite that not being the case. When the servant comes back, Elisha is waiting for him and curses him with Naaman's leprosy for his greed
