Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which UK airport was the first worldwide to have concourses and gates?

Answer: Gatwick

Gatwick was the first true "international airport". It was the birthplace of concourses and gates which are now a staple at every international airport. Before Gatwick, terminal buildings were little more than shanties, and planes parked on the field, which got muddy when it rained. A.M Jackaman came up with the concept of a telescoping canopy which extended from the terminal out to each parked aircraft on the ramp.

As Gatwick grew he built more, and the concept of a concourse and gates were born.
2. Which airport has spawned numerous bizarre conspiracy theories because of the layout of its runways, and the murals in the terminal building?

Answer: Denver

The conspiracy theories around Denver International Airport are numerous. Some people claim there is a bunker under it; some think the Pentagon stores missiles here; while others have been watching too many "Terminator" movies and believe Denver houses Skynet.

Other theories revolve around devil worship, the Freemasons, the Illuminati, NeoNazis, "Stargate" and UFOs. It's true that the layout of the runways and buildings do slightly resemble a swastika, and the murals by Leo Tanguma are pretty weird, but that's as far as it goes. Probably.
3. This airport in Hong Kong was ranked #6 on History Channel's "Most Extreme Airports", and often labelled "the most dangerous in the world" until it closed in 1998. What was its name?

Answer: Kai Tak

Kai Tak was arguably the most dangerous airport in the world and #6 on the list of History Channel's "Most Extreme Airports". It eventually closed for three main reasons; firstly, it was too close to the city center, causing planes to fly perilously close to the roofs of houses: secondly, it only had one runway which was dangerously short; and thirdly, it had a steep approach with no go-arounds.

Planes landing from the South China Sea side had to cross over the mountains and line up on the checkerboard to land, only narrowly avoiding skyscrapers and apartments at the end of the runway. Planes coming in from China had to fly in from Victoria Harbor and stop very quickly before they overshot and went into the bay. The authorities became fed up with delays to their air freight, accidents, and noise pollution. So in 1998 they closed it and built Chek Lap Kok Island Airport which is now the major international airport for Hong Kong.
4. Which US airport is home of the National Air and Space Museum?

Answer: Dulles

All of these four serve Washington DC, but only Dulles has the distinction of being home of the National Air and Space Museum. Dulles is modeled after a wing and has some of the largest runways in the United States. It also pioneered the use of mobile lounges, which were intended to avoid long walks for passengers, but (despite being introduced at a few other major airports) proved to be impractical and were eventually phased out, although Dulles was still stubbornly using them in 2018.
5. Go to where it all began in 1903. This small airport on Cape Hatteras is regarded as the birthplace of aviation.

Answer: Kitty Hawk

"First Flight Airport" in Kitty Hawk is where it all began. On a cold morning on December 17, 1903, the Wright Flyer made its first controlled, powered flight from here, and the "Age of Aviation" had begun.
6. All of these four US airports were designated as Space Shuttle landing sites, but one of them never actually saw a shuttle land. Which was it?

Answer: Mountain Home

Mountain Home was a backup site for the American Space Shuttle program, but it was never used. Mountain Home is home of the 366th Fighter Wing, The Singapore Air Force, and the 124th Fighter Wing who also are garrisoned at Gowen Air Force Base south of Boise International Airport.
7. This airport in Saint Martin is #4 on the list of History Channel's "Most Extreme Airports". To land here you have to land your plane on the beach. What is its name?

Answer: Princess Juliana

Princess Juliana Airport is known as "the airport on the beach". Every day planes take off and land low over the beach, and surfers are known to grab the fence in order to be blown into the water by the jet-blast, despite warning signs telling people to stay well away.

In 2017, a woman died as a result of the jet-blast, but that didn't seem to stop people from risking their lives for a quick thrill.
8. At which Hawaiian airport would you land if you wanted to tour Pearl Harbor?

Answer: Daniel K. Inouye

Daniel K. Inouye (better known as Honolulu International Airport) is the gateway to Pearl Harbor. Nearby is Hickam Air Force Base who uses the same runways as the airport for takeoffs and landings.
9. Ready to go skiing? Book a flight to this airport and you will soon be racing down "Baldy" in Idaho's back country.

Answer: Friedman

All of these airports have a ski resort next to them, but only one will take you to Bald Mountain, affectionately known as "Baldy". Friedman is also known as Wood River Regional Airport, and is the gateway to Sun Valley.

Joslin Field also known as Magic Valley Regional Airport is my airport and serves Twin Falls City Idaho where I live. Gowen Field and Air Force Base is also known as Boise International Airport which is the main airport coming into Idaho. Fanning Field is the airport for Idaho Falls and serves all flights coming into Eastern Idaho.
10. All these airports serve New York City, but which one was the first to be built?

Answer: Newark

Newark Metropolitan Airport (as it then was) opened in 1928, in the neighboring State of New Jersey. For ten years or so it served as the major airport for the nearby New York City, until the flamboyant Mayor of New York, Fiorello LaGuardia, lobbied for a major airport to be developed actually in NYC. This led to the expansion of the small North Beach Airport into a major commercial facility. It opened in 1939, and the next year was named LaGuardia in his honor.

In 1948, Kennedy (then commonly known as Idlewild) was built across town to tackle the international flights, with MacArthur (1942) focusing on regional traffic.

Newark was unfortunately the site of the September 11th Attacks. Flight 93 took off from here and crashed two hours later in Shanksville.

Because of September 11th security is upgraded at Newark and all airports.
