1. The original bridge over the River Kwai, of novel and film fame, can be found in which modern country?

Answer: Thailand

The French novelist Pierre Boulle wrote the 1952 novel "Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï" in 1952, which was made into a film in 1957 by David Lean. The film starred Alec Guinness as Col Nicholson and Sessue Hayakawa as Col Saito. It was filmed mostly around Kitulgala, Sri Lanka.

While both stories are largely fictionalised accounts of the building of the bridge, part of the Burma Railway, by WWII prisoners of war, the wartime bridge itself is real, and still exists as a working river crossing.
2. Between 1998 and 2022, which bridge had the longest suspension span of any bridge in the world?

Answer: Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, Japan

The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge has a main span length of 6,532 ft. It was completed in 1998. By comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge has a main span length of 4,200 ft. It's record was overtaken in 2022 by the 1915 Canakkale Bridge in Turkey, which has a central span of 6,637 ft.
