Answer: Stane Street

Watling Street, possibly the most famous, runs from Dover to Wroxeter via London. Akeman Street links St Albans with Cirencester and Ermine Street (not to be confused with Ermin Street) links London with York. Stane Street is also known as 'Stone Street' as were a number of Roman Roads due to their being made of stone, and unlike the typical dirt tracks of the time.

The M25 is not a complete ring in order to allow non-motorway traffic to cross the River Thames at Dartford (either via the tunnel or the QEII Bridge). The M25 is 117 miles long, and would take just short of 2 hours to drive a complete circuit at the speed limit. However, it is notorious for traffic and at most times of day this would take twice as long!

The A39 runs from Bath, South West, close to the North Devon & Cornwall coasts. Although it never actually comes very close to the coast itself, it offers views of the Atlantic Ocean, and for a long stretch in Devon and Cornwall, is so named.

The Preston by-pass is now part of the M6 and was opened in December 1958. The Lancaster by-pass was built shortly after. The Barnet by-pass is part of the A1, and the Blackburn by-pass is essentially the M65. The Preston Bypass was an experiment in British motorway building, and roadworks were soon required as the carriageway broke up after a heavy frost in January 1959, which totally closed the newly open roadway.

Although not factually right - the M25 is actually the road to the Dartford Crossing of the Thames whichever way you go - it can be hellish driving during the daylight hours on London's ring-road! As a two-part song, it was released in 1989 and got to #10 on the UK charts, its best chart placing globally.

The Aston Expressway is one of the many roads which converge with the M6 at Spaghetti Junction (Gravelly Hill Interchange). Villa Park, home of Aston Villa is clearly visible from the elevated section. The road was once crossed by a vinegar pipeline which ran between the two sides of the HP Sauce factory which is now demolished, which once leaked and damaged numerous cars beneath (Wikipedia).

The stricken aeroplane attempted to make an emergency landing at East Midlands airport but crashed onto the motorway embankment, just short of the runway. 47 people on the flight tragically died, however, despite coming down at 8.26pm on on of Britain's busiest motorways, not one vehicle was even damaged.

As it's partly pedestrianised, it is also the main shopping street in Glasgow. The name Sauchiehall derives from 'Saugh' the Scots name for a 'willow tree' and 'Haugh' which is a word for 'meadow', however this was later corrupted or Anglicised to 'hall'

Tolls were scrapped in 2008, so drivers can enjoy the view of the Firth of Forth on this 1km suspension bridge, built in 1964, for free! It is not to be confused with the Forth (Rail) Bridge, which is a famous cantilever bridge and possibly Scotland's best known man-made landmark.

The A5 mainly follows original Roman Roads and crosses to Anglesey via the Menai Bridge. It was initially devised as a route connecting the capitals of England and Ireland (London & Dublin) as part of the Act of Union 1800, using and improving existing roads, much of which was the Roman Road (Watling Street)and as such is considered the first state funded road project in the UK.
