Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was not a type of ship found in the British Royal Navy in the 1970s?

Answer: Battleship

The battleship was found in the U.S. Navy but not in the British Royal Navy, although battleships were once used in the early times of the British Royal Navy.
2. From 1993-2005, which vessel served as the flagship of the British Royal Navy?

Answer: HMS Invincible

Another light aircraft carrier, HMS Ark Royal, succeeded Invincible as the RN flagship from 2005-07, with HMS Illustrious taking over the role from 2007-09, before Ark Royal took it back until 2010. At this point, with all three aircraft carriers having been decommissioned, the role of flagship was taken by a succession of amphibious assault ships; HMSs Albion, Bulwark and Ocean.

The British Royal Navy flagship is able to deploy anywhere in the world with 48 hours notice, in accordance with the UK foreign policy.
3. Which type of ship carries the UK strategic nuclear deterrent?

Answer: Submarine

The four Vanguard class submarine each carry up to 16 Trident II D5 nuclear missiles.
4. Which of these types of ship has been the most abundant in the British Royal Navy fleet?

Answer: Leander class Frigate

There have been 26 Leander class Frigates, the last of which was decommisioned in the early 1990s. However, some are still serving in foreign Navies, such as the Royal New Zealand Navy.
5. The Sea Harrier FA2 and the RAF Harrier GR7 are the only types of fixed wing aircraft regularly used by the British Royal Navy.

Answer: False

The British Navy also uses the Jetstream T2 to train potential observers and the Jetstream T3is used for operational support and communications at HMS Heron in Yeovilton.
6. What, compared to most other British Royal Navy vessels, is peculiar to HMS Endurance?

Answer: She is a different colour

Because HMS Endurance operates in the frozen Antarctic, her hull is painted red rather than the usual light grey for easy recognition.
7. Which of these UK Royal Navy ships is or was NOT a carrier for fixed-wing aircraft?

Answer: HMS Ocean

HMS Ocean is an amphibious ship which carries only helicopters, having no ramp for fixed wing aircraft to take off from. The other options (now sadly decommissioned) were all fixed-wing carriers.
8. Sea Dart missiles have been fired from Aircraft Carriers and Destroyers.

Answer: True

Sea Dart missiles are no longer found on board Aircraft carriers, in order to create more space on deck.
9. Which of these is the principal anti submarine helicopter used by the British Royal Navy?

Answer: Merlin HM Mk 1

The Merlin replaced the Sea King ASW in 2000 as the Navy's anti submarine helicopter. The Sea King ASaC stands for airborne surveillance and area control and the Lynx Mk 4 is used for carrying troops.
10. Which type of British Royal Navy ship is made from a material other than metal?

Answer: Mine Countermeasures Vessel

Mine Countermeasures Vessels (MCMV) are made from glass-reinforced plastic, or GRP. This is because they are designed for working in dangerous areas, where mines may be activated by the magnetic properties of the metal in the hull.
