As a result of a merger between The Marine Safety Agency (MSA) and the Coastguard Agency (TCA) in 1998, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency was formed and moved to Spring Palace in Southampton.

HM Coastguard is currently split into three Regions;

Western,

The Regions shown above are purely the divisions on land. The divisions to seaward will vary for each district. Each region has a number of Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCC) and Maritime Rescue Sub Centres (MRSC). Each Rescue Centre is responsible for the day to day running of its designated district including co-ordination of incidents inside that district boundary.
A Co-ordination Centre also has regional responsibilities to which the sub-resecue centres report to.
