Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Fairtrade labelling system was established, in 1988, in which European country?

Answer: Netherlands

Coffee was the first product to be available as a certified Fairtrade product. It was sold under the name of Max Havelaar, the fictional character from a novel published in 1860. The novel, written under the pen name Multatuli, exposed the corrupt practices of the colonial Dutch government in Indonesia, which included the exploitation of the local labour force.

The name was an apt choice for a scheme designed to avoid malpractice. The scheme soon spread - to other European countries initially, and then to others such as Canada, Japan and USA.
2. As well as a minimum price for their goods, Fairtrade producers are paid a small amount over and above their value. What is this called?

Answer: Premium

The Fairtrade contract with the producers guarantees the lowest price which they can be offered for their goods. If the market price is higher, then they will receive that amount instead, but the buyers cannot offer a lower figure, even if the market has dropped.

In addition, a premium is paid which has to be used for the benefit of the local community. It can be used to build wells or provide school facilities and the decisions on how to use the premium are made by the community.
3. The first chocolate bar to carry the Fairtrade symbol in the UK was named 'Maya Gold'. It was produced by which company?

Answer: Green & Black's

Not only was it the first chocolate bar, 'Maya Gold' was the very first Fairtrade product in the UK in 1994. By 2010, Green and Black's had transferred their whole range, including drinking chocolate, to Fairtrade. The next two products to be Fairtrade certified were Clipper Tea and Café Direct coffee, both of which can still be found on supermarket shelves in 2014. Cadbury's also offer Fairtrade products, including Dairy Milk bars, chocolate buttons, cocoa and drinking chocolate.
4. In the UK, which of these products can be found bearing the Fairtrade logo?

Answer: All of these

Cotton is produced in India, and products available in the UK include cotton wool, clothing, bedding and bags. Africa provides the ingredients for beer. Beauty products available include moisturisers and bath/shower gels as well as body scrubs, and are stocked by High Street retailers such as Boots and The Body Shop. You can even buy Fairtrade colas, which use certified sugar, and many more.
5. In 2011, gold produced by the Oro Verde mine received Fairtrade accreditation. In which country, whose flag is predominantly yellow, is the mine situated?

Answer: Colombia

Fairtrade supports the Oro Verde mine, which is run by small scale miners. In the past, the miners had taken risks, particularly with health and safety, but Fairtrade certification has enabled them to meet higher standards of working conditions and environmental protection.

The miners are guaranteed a minimum price plus 10% to be invested in the community. The Colombian flag consists of three horizontal stripes with yellow being the top half and blue and red the lower half.
6. The branch of the Fairtrade organisation which is responsible for authorising use of the logo began using which name in 2004?

Answer: FLO-CERT

In 1997, an international organisation was formed under the name of the Fairtrade Labelling Organisation to bring together all the different national schemes and establish standards common to all. This is where the FLO part of the name originated, with FLO-CERT being responsible for certifying goods as meeting the requirements of Fairtrade.

They also carry out audits of overseas groups. Among the standards laid down are fair treatment of employees, restrictions on child labour and banning the use of harmful chemicals on crops.
7. In January 2010, Nestlé received Fairtrade certification for which of these products?

Answer: Kit Kat

Initially, only the four-finger version was accredited, but Nestlé extended their Fairtrade range to include the two-finger Kit Kats in January 2013. By the end of 2013, most of their Kit Kat range carried the Fairtrade logo, with cocoa being bought from co-operatives in the Ivory Coast, Africa.
8. In 2005, which ice cream manufacturer began using Fairtrade goods for its range?

Answer: Ben & Jerry's

As if you needed an excuse to buy Ben & Jerry's! You can now look at the logo as you indulge and know you have supported the producers. By 2013, the company had changed its whole range to Fairtrade, with ingredients such as vanilla, coffee, cocoa, sugar and bananas all coming from certified sources.
9. In 2012, Mars began selling Maltesers with the Fairtrade logo in the UK and Ireland.

Answer: True

Maltesers became the first Fairtrade product offered by Mars in June 2012, using chocolate, vanilla and sugar from certified sources. It followed this with another best selling product with Mars Bars also using Fairtrade chocolate.
10. The Fairtrade logo consists of which two colours, on a black background?

Answer: Green and blue

The logo bears a vague resemblance to the yin and yang symbol, with the blue part of the symbol being larger than the lime green part. Most people seem to believe that it symbolises the sky and growing crops. By 2007, the symbol appeared on more than 4500 products in the UK alone, including wine, tea, coffee, sugar, many varieties of fruit (not just bananas) and flowers. Most supermarkets stock a wide range.

It is also possible to buy Fairtrade cotton goods and even sports balls.
