Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Popular nicknames for this interstate include the Santa Monica Freeway, the Katy Freeway, the Pontchartrain Expressway and the Pearl Harbor Memorial Freeway. Which US interstate goes by these descriptive nicknames?

Answer: Interstate 10

I-10 is 2,460 miles of highway connecting Jacksonville, FL to Santa Monica, CA. The interstate began construction in 1957 and has been improved many times over the years. The interstate crosses through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

The longest stretch of I-10 through any state is Texas where it crosses the widest part of the state at 881 miles. I-10 also has junctions with ten other interstates across the US.
2. Interstate 95 runs along the Atlantic seaboard from the north to the south. I-95 passes through more states than any other interstate. Which of these states does I-95 NOT pass through?

Answer: Vermont

I-95 passes through Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. It also passes through Washington D.C. The interstate is approximately 1,920 miles long making it the sixth longest interstate in the US.
3. If you were to drive the length of Interstate 90, you would begin near the Logan Airport in Boston and end up near which Major League team's baseball park?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

If you were to drive the entire span of I-90, you would have driven right around 3,100 miles, the longest of any US interstate. You would also have passed through 13 states, second most of any other interstate behind I-95.
4. The US interstate system comprises more than 47,000 miles. That is the second longest interstate system in the world behind which other country?

Answer: China

China's interstate system is well over 59,000 miles long and connects many of the largest Chinese cities. The interstate started in 1988 and has grown rapidly over the years. China continues to invest heavily in its infrastructure, and roadways are one of its largest expenditures.
5. If Jerry Jones decided to cut his expenses and cancel all chartered flights, which interstate would the Dallas Cowboys travel on if they were being hosted by the Atlanta Falcons?

Answer: Interstate 20

I seriously doubt that Mr. Jones would ever send his team packing on a Greyhound bus, but if he did, and the Cowboys were taking on the Falcons in their home stadium, then I-20 would be the route to take. I-20 connects the cities of Florence, South Carolina and Kent, Texas. Dallas, Shreveport, Jackson and Birmingham are other major cities served by the interstate as it passes through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama respectively.
6. Which of the following state capitols can not be accessed by one of the major US interstates?

Answer: Dover, Delaware

Dover, Delaware can be accessed by several state highways, but not by the only interstate, I-95. I-95 crosses into Delaware from Maryland and the cities of Newark, Christiana, Newport, Wilmington and Claymont are reached before the interstate crosses over into Pennsylvania.
7. Many interstates do not pass through multiple states, often the entire span of the interstate will remain in a single state. One example of this is Interstate 17. Which state would you find I-17?

Answer: Arizona

Often called intrastate highways, since the highway is contained in a single state, these interstate systems are primarily used to connect major cities within a single state. There are several examples of these intrastate highways including I-17 which connects Flagstaff and Phoenix, Arizona.
8. Interstate 5 is the major roadway passing through the west coast states of California, Oregon and Washington. It would seem obvious that the longest span of I-5 would be in California due to the long orientation of the state, but which state has the second longest span of the roadway?

Answer: Oregon

I-5 runs for nearly 797 miles from the bottom to top of California. It travels for 308 miles in Oregon and only for around 277 miles in Washington. I-5 literally runs from the US-Mexico border at San Ysidro to the US-Canada border in Blaine, Washington.
9. Major US interstates use a two-digit number as the interstate name. Which is the highest number used as a name for an interstate?

Answer: I-99

I-99 is one of the intrastate highways located continuously in Pennsylvania. I-96 begins in Bedford and passes through Altoona and State College before terminating in Bellefonte. I-99 is nearly 86 miles in length. The interstate was commissioned in 1998.
10. What is the highest speed limit allowed on any US interstate?

Answer: 80 mph

In rural areas of Texas along I-10 and I-20, and in rural areas of Utah along I-15, speed limits are 80 miles per hour. The vast majority of the US interstate system allows speeds up to 75 miles per hour. In several cases, speed limits can be even lower.

In parts of Cleveland and Washington D.C., the speed is limited to 50 miles per hour. In Wheeling, West Virginia, speed limits are lowered to 45 miles per hour in several locations. It's always careful to be aware of the speed limit wherever your travels may take you to avoid an unexpected speeding citation.
