Art Deco, is a style of art that was popularized in France in the 1920s, and a French artist has captured the attention of many tourists with this Jesus overseeing the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The idea for a statue began in in 1850s when a priest wanted to make a Christian monument on the mountain.

The idea was dismissed until 1920, when local Catholics took up funds to raise money for the statue. Paul Landowski, a French artist, designed the statue and Brazilian engineer, Heitor da Silva Costa, put the art into formation.

It took nine years to build. The outer part of the statue was made with soap stone and the inner part out of concrete. Seventy five years after the statue was built, a chapel was built underneath the statue for tourist to have weddings and ceremonies.

Its height of 33 meters was purposely made to symbolize a traditional belief that Jesus was 33 years old when he was crucified. Funds from many nations around the world were collected to build the statue.

The year it was completed in 2010, the statue was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest statue of Jesus in the world.

It was assembled at the top of the pass of La Cumbre, at the highest point of the border road. It is only accessible in the summer because snow and other weather make it a dangerous hike for travelers.

The explosion killed 168 people, including women and children. St. Joseph's Catholic Church built the statue of Jesus across from the time gates honoring the victims and the chairs representing each life lost by the blast. Jesus faces away from the memorial with his face in his hands and below him is simply the line "And Jesus Wept". Jesus faces a wall with 168 gaps, a gap for each person who lost their life.

The four arches of the pedestal are in sequence with a compass and point to the directions of the north, south, east and west. The statue is 294 feet high and was designed by designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.

The dress code did not stop visitors from coming, however. As one of the tallest statues of Jesus in the world, many pilgrims still made the journey to visit the statue on top of the Vung Tao mountain. Once at the top of the statue, visitors could see a beautiful view of the ocean.
