Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. U.S. President Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel are both buried on the grounds of the couple's plantation home, the Hermitage, in which city?

Answer: Nashville

The Hermitage was owned by President Jackson for decades, though he rarely spent time there until he left office in 1837. The Hermitage was once a slave plantation that primarily grew cotton.

The Jacksons are buried in the Hermitage Garden in a spot marked by a limestone gazebo-like structure. Rachel Jackson died in 1828 and the future president buried her in the garden because it was her favorite place to be. The Hermitage is a U.S. National Historic Monument.
2. Discovered on November 4, 1922, KV62 is the official tomb number of which Egyptian who died in 1323 BC?

Answer: Tutankhamun

Tutankhamun became known as the Boy King because he was so young when he ruled Egypt, reigning for about nine years before he died aged around 18. There is no consensus as to how he died, but popular theories include that he was murdered, contracted malaria or died in some kind of accident.

His burial tomb was discovered in 1922 and excavated by Howard Carter. After his tomb was opened, a number of mysterious incidents occurred which led some people to think a curse was unleashed by opening the tomb. Some of the artefacts discovered inside the tomb were a dagger that might have been mined from a meteorite, a gold and jewelled funerary mask and several wooden chests. The tomb can be visited in Egypt's Valley of the Kings, although most of the original contents are now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
3. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, his wife Sophie, and three of their sons are all interred at Artstetten Castle, in which country?

Answer: Austria

Artstetten Castle had a long history of being owned by various European noble families. The Habsburgs bought it 1823. Artstetten Castle was honored by being featured on an Austrian commemorative coin in 2004.

The Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated in 1914, an event that sent Europe into World War I. They were interred in the castle's crypt nearby their stillborn son who died in 1908. The couple's two other sons, Maximilian and Ernst and their wives were interred next to them when they died decades later.
4. Which biblical figure is buried in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (pictured) according to Christians; in the Cave of Patriarchs according to the Jewish people and Sunni Muslims; and in the Imam Ali Mosque according to Shia Muslims?

Answer: Adam

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is where Christians believe Adam is buried. The church is said to have been built over the site where Jesus was crucified and where his empty tomb is. According to some early Christian traditions, Jesus was crucified over Adam's burial place and that his blood filled Adam's skull when he was nailed to the cross.

The Cave of Patriarchs is located in the West Bank. It is called the Sanctuary of Abraham by Muslims. The Jewish people believe that several biblical couples are buried there including Adam and Eve and Sarah and Abraham. Sunni Muslims also believe Joseph, Jesus' foster father, is also buried there.

The Imam Ali Mosque is located in Najaf, Iraq. Shia Muslims believe Adam and Noah are both buried there. The mosque is dedicated to Ali ibn Abi Talib, Muhammad's cousin.
5. Who is the earliest reigning pope (whose tomb is pictured) to be buried in St. Peter's Basilica?

Answer: Peter

Saint Peter, the Catholic Church's first pope, is also the earliest serving pope to be interred in his namesake basilica. St. Peter's Basilica was actual built over the tomb of St. Peter. This was a difficult task as the land there was not suitable to build a large building.

Much of the terrain had to be levelled. St. Peter's Basilica is a popular burial location for modern day popes. All popes who reigned during the 20th century are buried there except for one: Leo XIII, who is interred at the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
6. The Castel Sant'Angelo was the burial place of the ashes of which Roman Emperor?

Answer: Hadrian

Hadrian had commissioned the Castel Sant'Angelo to be a mausoleum for him and his family. His ashes were interred there after his death and some subsequent emperor's were also buried there. Almost all the remains and tombs were destroyed during the many times the Rome was attacked by its enemies.

The building was originally called the Mausoleum of Hadrian. The name was changed to Castel Sant'Angelo because of a legend in 590 AD that the angel Michael appeared at the top of the building during a plague. A statue of the angel now rests at the top of the building.
7. Though not exactly a burial place, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka, contains what is claimed to be a tooth relic of which founder of a religion?

Answer: Buddha

Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was cremated after his death. His relics were originally divided among eight royal families and eventually the relics were buried in 84,000 stupas, according to legend.

The Temple of the Tooth in Sri Lanka is said to contain one of the right teeth of the Buddha. Every Wednesday at the temple, a bathing ceremony is held and the water is then distributed to those present. This holy water is said to have healing powers.
8. Mormonism founder Joseph Smith is buried in the city of Nauvoo in which US state?

Answer: Illinois

Joseph Smith died in the city of Carthage, Illinois, after a mob attacked him and his brother Hyrum while they were in jail. Smith and his immediate family when they died were buried in the city of Nauvoo where the Mormons had started a society after being forced out of Missouri.

The place of Smith's grave is the Smith Family Cemetery. The Smith Brothers were originally interred under Nauvoo House and disinterred later. Almost a century after their deaths, their burial place was moved because the nearby Mississippi River's rising waters were a threat to the grave.
9. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Maureen O'Hara and Thurgood Marshall are just three of the many famous Americans buried in what cemetery?

Answer: Arlington

Arlington is probably the most famous cemetery in the United States. Most of the graves there belong to servicemen and women who were killed in war time. The cemetery was established on the grounds of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's home, which was at the time controlled by his wife who was also a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. The property had been seized from Mrs. Lee (though her heirs sued and won and later sold the land back to the U.S. Government).

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is buried there with her husband President John Kennedy and their children Patrick and Arabella (who was stillborn). An eternal flame (pictured) shines by their graves. Actress Maureen O'Hara is also buried there with her husband USAF Brigadier General Charles Blair. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall is also buried there. He was the nation's first African-American Supreme Court Justice and prior to that argued the Brown v. Board of Education case in front of the Supreme Court.
10. Which French monument is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?

Answer: Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate the French victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1806. The Unknown Soldier was not entombed in the Arc de Triomphe until after World War I in 1920. An eternal flame was lit here in memory of French soldiers who died and were not identified during both world wars.

After John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy requested an eternal flame be lit by his grave. She was inspired to do so by her visit to France and the Arc de Triomphe in 1961.
