Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is reputed to be the oldest 'British' pub in Wanchai?

Answer: Old China Hand

All are supposedly British theme pubs, not that you'd ever find a pub like these in UK. The Old China Hand claims to be one of the longest operating pubs in Wanchai. The White Stag is about as English as you will get with pub grub, pub quiz and the footie on TV.

The Horse and Groom, and Horse and Carriage are run by and cater for the local Chinese but the walls and ceilings are cluttered with British pub memorabilia.
2. There's a cocktail bar in the Wanchai district of Hong Kong where the clientele sip martinis whilst sitting on leopard and zebra skin sofas. Which is it?

Answer: Tango Martini

Tango Martini was previously the Rugby Union Club and the only genuine cocktail lounge in Wanchai with an extensive martini menu. Bebek Bengil is a Balinese restaurant and bar also referred to as the Dirty Duck Diner. Les Visage (sic) is a live music bar and restaurant and Dragon Bar has the obligatory girls outside calling, "Darling, you come in - just one drink".
3. Once a famous Tsim Sha Tsui hostess bar, this is now a Wanchai sports bar. Which is it?

Answer: Bottoms Up

Bottoms Up was made famous in the James Bond movie "The Man with the Golden Gun" when it was situated in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon. It is now a smaller and quieter version of its former self. Show Biz, Club Romance and Club Bunny are examples of the typical Lockhart Road hostess bars which are slowly disappearing from Wanchai.
4. Marketed as 'the home of folk and rock music' this was once one of the most popular live music venues in Wanchai.

Answer: The Wanch

The Wanch is one of the older bars in Wanchai and was once very popular with the British 'expat' community. They still have live music most nights but much of the 'expat' clientele have left Hong Kong. Carnegies is a live music bar similar to Hard Rock Cafe but where you can dance on the bar and just about anywhere else you like. Dusk 'til Dawn and Joe Bananas both feature live bands, DJs and dancing till very late.
5. What used to be Rick's Cafe and is still a popular place for a drink and music in Wanchai. What is it called?

Answer: Chinatown

Chinatown is a Chinese theme bar and, as you might expect, it is done out in red and green with statues of dragons and the waitresses wear split skirt Cheongsams. Rennie Mac's is a Scottish bar specialising in premium spirits and champagne, Skitz is an upstairs pool bar and Delaney's is a longstanding Irish pub.
6. At which of the following Wanchai clubs did the hostesses dress as St. Trinian's schoolgirls?

Answer: Country Laser Club

Country Laser Club is well known for having the hostesses in unusual uniforms such as Santa outfits at Christmas or rugby costumes during the Hong Kong Sevens Tournament. Wild Cat, Crazy Horse and San Francisco are all similar hostess bars but at those the women wear very little at all.
7. As of 2008, which new bar was arguably the most popular of the all night disco bars in Wanchai?

Answer: Fenwick

The disco bars are all similar - with loud music, packed dance floors, single women and open 'till late or all night. Fenwick's is the newest compared to Strawberry's, Neptune's and Laguna and certainly seems the busiest on Friday and Saturday nights.
8. This tiny Wanchai bar is dedicated to Harley Davidson and has a range of bike memorabilia. What is it called?

Answer: Handlebar

The Handlebar can't be more than about 500 or 600 square feet in area and is one of the smallest pubs in Wanchai. The Junk Pub is almost next door and possibly even smaller. Cooperstown is a sports theme bar and The Bell Inn is a small pub that nobody ever seems to drink in and nobody seems to know anything about.
9. This Wanchai bar is based on the movie "Coyote Ugly" and features singing and dancing waitresses. Which is it?

Answer: The Groovy Mule

The Groovy Mule has (mainly Antipodean) singing and dancing waitresses dressed as cowgirls. Coyote is a Mexican theme bar, Mes Amis a very popular spot in the centre of Wanchai and Cinta J does live music and Filipino food.
10. Which of these is not a Wanchai bar?

Answer: Insomnia

Insomnia is in Lan Kwai Fong, one of the other popular Hong Kong nightspots. The other bars are all in Wanchai but rather off the beaten track or less well known. Exit is in St Francis Yard, Nicolby's is in the basement of the Warney Hotel and Uptown 90 is on the corner of Luard and Jaffe Roads.
