Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following terms means 'I like'?

Answer: J'aime

Je suis means I am. J'ai means I have. Je mange means I eat. J'aime however, is not the only way to say I like. You could say J'adore, amongst others.
2. What is the verb 'to have' in French?

Answer: Avoir

Voir, although similar to the correct answer actually means 'to see'. Devoir means 'to ought to do something'. Although in the sentence 'Je fais mes devoirs', it means 'homework.' Recevoir is very similar to the English and means 'to receive'.
3. How does the common French phrase 'A mon avis', translate into English?

Answer: In my opinion

Hopefully you didn't answer 'To my hire car' - Avis being a company which hires out cars! 'I would like', in French is actually 'Je voudrais.' 'Avec mes amis' would more correctly represent 'With my friends.'
4. Which of these towns with names of French origin is not actually located in France, or any French-speaking country?

Answer: Ashby de la Zouch

Ashby de la Zouch is in England, and interestingly, if you read the back of your Hula-Hoop packets you would have known this, as KP Foods are based in Ashby de la Zouch!
5. All but one of the following French words are animals, which is the odd word out?

Answer: ouragan

An 'ouragan' is a hurricane. A 'cheval' is a horse, a 'cochon' is a pig and a 'poisson' is a fish.
6. Which of the following French phrases is grammatically incorrect, or does not make sense?

Answer: J'avoir pas.

'Je l'aime' means 'I like her/it.' 'Je m'en fous' means 'I don't care', 'Je deteste ça' means 'I hate that'. 'J'avoir pas' does not make sense because 'avoir' is the infinitive of a verb, not the correct form, and the negative 'pas' needs a 'ne' before the verb.
7. One of the following words is French for 'now', but which is spelt correctly?

Answer: Maintenant

Maintenant is the correct spelling, and in certain contexts can also mean 'Nowadays'.
8. Which of the following is not French for a means of transport?

Answer: Oiseau

'Oiseau' is French for 'Bird'. 'Voiture' is a 'Car'. 'Avion' is an 'Aeroplane', or 'Airplane' whilst 'Car' is a 'Coach'. 'Car' is also French for 'because' or 'for'.
9. Which of the following words is feminine (rather than masculine)?

Answer: Fleur

Fleur which means 'Flower' is the only feminine noun. Chocolat meaning 'Chocolate', Chaton meaning 'Kitten' and Fromage meaning 'Cheese' are all masculine nouns.
10. The last question of the quiz, we have reached the end! So, fittingly, how is 'the end' translated into French?

Answer: La fin

La fin means 'the end'. Le début actually means 'the start', as does le commencement, whilst L'ouverture means 'the opening.'
