Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. OK, here's the first question. In Chinese, what does 'ni hao' mean?

Answer: hello

2. To whom, when talking, do children say 'nin hao' instead of 'ni hao'?

Answer: Those of another generation

'Nin hao' is the more polite and respectable way to talk. That is why when kids talk to teachers, that have to say 'nin hao'. 'Ni hao' is just to other classmates etc. and informal times.
3. Getting hard? How do you say 'I love you' in Chinese?

Answer: Wo ai ni

'Wo hen ni' means I hate you . 'Wo xia le ta' means I scared him (or her). And 'Wo pa ta' means I am scared of him (or her).
4. 'Huai' is the Chinese word for good, yes or no?

Answer: no

'Hao' is the Chinese word for good.
5. What does 'yi bai' mean?

Answer: one hundred

'Yi' means one, and 'bai' means a hundred, so if you put it together, you get one hundred. Get it?
6. Here's the next one! 'Ni hao, wo de ming zi shi xiao niao.' What did I just say?

Answer: Hello, my name is littlebird.

This isn't actually real Chinese. Real Chinese has characters, not letters like English. This is the pronounciation that other people use to say Chinese.
7. In English, how many apples do I have if I add my 'wu' apples and Shelly's 'san' apples?

Answer: eight

Do you know what values 'wu' and 'shi' are now? 'Wu' is five. Now you should know what 'san' is.
8. OK! Just a few more questions. What does 'sheng dan kuai le' mean (in Chinese of course)?

Answer: Merry Christmas

The Chinese didn't origanally have Christmas. It has been picked up as a tradition in many families now though.
9. Now, what is Happy New Year in Chinese MANDARIN?

Answer: xin nian kuai le

The most important Chinese holiday is New Year's. Chinese New Year is celebrated in the end of January and the beginning of Febuary instead of January 1.
10. Every quiz needs a boring question, but it's okay, it's almost over. The last but not least: How do you say ' one, two, three, four, five, six,... ten' in Chinese?
