Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The spacecraft used to fly the Gemini XII mission was placed on display at the Adler Planetarium, which is located in which major American city?

Answer: Chicago, Illinois

The Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois was built in 1930. The planetarium sits within a large park area located along the shore of Lake Michigan near Soldier Field. Adler Planetarium features two dome-shaped theaters and a third high-definition theater.

In addition to being a planetarium the facility also serves as a small space museum and has been the home of the Gemini XII spacecraft since 2006. Gemini XII was the last mission of the Gemini Program. It was launched on November 11, 1966 and was the second mission for astronaut Jim Lovell, who would later fly to the moon on Apollo 8 and 13.

It was also the first mission for Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who became the second man to walk on the moon during Apollo 11.
2. This is the command module used for the unmanned Apollo 6 mission. It was placed on display at the Fernbank Science Center, which is located near which peachy American city?

Answer: Atlanta, Georgia

Fernbank Science Center is located in DeKalb County near the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The Fernbank Science Center was established in 1967 and consists of a small science museum, planetarium and observatory, which is owned and operated by the DeKalb County School System.

Despite its small size, one of the Fernbank Science Center's main attractions is the command module used during Apollo 6. Apollo 6 was launched on April 4, 1968 and was the last unmanned test flight of the Apollo program. Its primary mission was to test out the Saturn V rocket which would be used to send astronauts to the Moon.
3. The command module Odyssey, which was used during Apollo 13, was placed on display at which museum located in the Great Plains region of the United States?

Answer: Kansas Cosmosphere

The Kansas Cosmosphere is located in the city of Hutchinson, approximately an hour drive northwest of Wichita, Kansas' largest city. Known today as simply the Cosmosphere, the museum was first established in 1962 as a planetarium. Among the exhibits at the Cosmosphere is the command module Odyssey, which flew during Apollo 13 (April, 1970). Odyssey's service module was extensively damaged after its one of its oxygen tanks exploded, forcing the astronauts to abort the mission and use the lunar module as a lifeboat to return to Earth.

The Cosmosphere seems to like collecting periled spacecraft as it also houses the Mercury spacecraft Liberty Bell 7, which sank shortly after splashdown in 1961 and was not recovered until 1999.
4. Kitty Hawk, the command module for Apollo 14, was placed on display at the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. Which city was this originally located at?

Answer: Titusville, Florida

The United States Astronaut Hall of Fame was established in October, 1990. It was originally located in the city of Titusville, Florida directly across the intercoastal waterway from the entrance to Kennedy Space Center. The Hall of Fame was moved to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in 2016.

In addition to exhibits dedicated to the astronauts, the Hall of Fame was the home for several spacecraft including the command module Kitty Hawk, which flew during Apollo 14 (January, 1971). Following the closure of the original Hall of Fame in 2015, the spacecraft was moved to the Apollo/Saturn V Center which is located within the grounds of Kennedy Space Center and can only be visited during official tours.

The photograph was taken in 2010.
5. Apollo 15's command module Endeavour was placed on display at a museum located in Dayton, Ohio. Which branch of the American military is this museum dedicated to?

Answer: Air Force

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located within the grounds of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The museum was established in 1923 at the old McCook Field and moved into its current location in 1971. The museum houses many iconic military aircraft such as a Boeing B-17 named the "Memphis Belle".

The museum separates its collection of aircraft based on historical period (World War I, World War II, Cold War, etc.). The museum also houses the command module Endeavour, used during the Apollo 15 mission.

It was launched to the moon on July 29, 1971. All three of the crew members on Apollo 15 (David Scott, Al Worden and James Irwin) served in the United States Air Force before becoming astronauts.
6. The command module named Casper flew during the Apollo 16 mission. It was placed on display at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, located near which NASA owned facility?

Answer: Marshall Space Flight Center, Alabama

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is located in the city of Huntsville in northern Alabama, which is also where NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is located. In addition to being a museum, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center serves as the main location of NASA's Space Camp, a summer camp designed to teach children about the space program.

The museum houses a decent collection of iconic rockets and spacecraft, including the command module used during Apollo 16 (April, 1972). This particular spacecraft was named Casper after the cartoon character, Casper the Friendly Ghost.
7. This picture of Space Shuttle Enterprise was taken aboard a retired American aircraft carrier located in New York City. Can you name it?

Answer: USS Intrepid

The USS Intrepid is an Essex-class aircraft carrier that was first launched in 1943. The Intrepid served in the latter half of World War II and also saw action during the Vietnam War before it was decommissioned in 1974. In 1982, the Intrepid was moved to its current location on the Hudson River side (west side) of Manhattan, New York City, where it became the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Space Shuttle Enterprise, which was completed in 1977, was the first orbiter to be built.

However, the Enterprise was only designed for aerodynamic testing and never flew on a mission into space. Before the retirement of the Space Shuttle, the Enterprise was housed at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

It was relocated to the Intrepid in New York in 2012.
8. It seems fitting that Space Shuttle Atlantis would be placed on display at the location where its many missions began. Where would this be?

Answer: Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Space Shuttle Atlantis, the fourth orbiter to be built, was first launched on October 3, 1985. It completed 33 missions by the end of the Space Shuttle program. Atlantis was the last orbiter to fly on a mission when it completed mission STS-135 in July, 2011. Following its decommission, the Atlantis was refurbished and placed in a special exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex in Florida.

The exhibit was opened to the public on June 29, 2013. The Mercury spacecraft Sigma 7 and the spacecraft used for Gemini IX were also placed at the Kennedy Space Center after previously being housed at the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
9. Space Shuttle Endeavour had a special pavilion built for it at which of the following museums located on the west coast of the United States?

Answer: California Science Center (Los Angeles)

Space Shuttle Endeavour was the fifth and last orbiter to be built. It was constructed to replace Space Shuttle Challenger, which was destroyed during launch in 1986. Endeavour was first launched on May 7, 1992 and completed 25 missions total for the Space Shuttle program.

It completed its final mission (STS-134) on June 1, 2011. Following its retirement, it was decided that Space Shuttle Endeavour would be housed at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. The museum was established in 1951 as the California Museum of Science and Industry.

It changed its name to the California Science Center in 1998. In October, 2012, Endeavour was transported through the streets of L.A. to get to the museum from Los Angeles International Airport. The orbiter's journey was highlighted in a Super Bowl commercial promoting the Toyota Tundra.
10. This photograph was taken at the Udvar-Hazy Center, which became the home of Space Shuttle Discovery. This museum is physically connected to which major American airport?

Answer: Dulles International Airport, Virginia

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is operated by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. It houses many large historical aircraft that are not able to fit at the main museum located in Washington, D.C. The Udvar-Hazy Center is connected via taxiway to Dulles International Airport, which is located in northern Virginia, approximately thirty miles west of Washington, D.C. Space Shuttle Discovery was the third orbiter to be built.

It became the oldest space-worthy shuttle following the destruction of its predecessors Columbia and Challenger. Discovery was first launched on August 30, 1984 and flew 39 missions in total, the most of any orbiter. Discovery completed its final mission (STS-133) on March 9, 2011.

In April, 2012, Discovery was moved into the Udvar-Hazy Center, taking the place of Space Shuttle Enterprise.
