What is the museum? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. This stop may be a bit morbid for the entire school; you may need to cover the eyes of small fry. But you've almost scaled this question - you must be dying for it all to end. Speaking of dying, which of the below funerary exhibits is NOT displayed at the National Museum of Funeral History (NMFH)? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Here's a chance to redeem your odd museum honor. Get this one right and you go to the head of the class. Miss it and you're shafted! quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In America's Museum of Bad Art (MOBA), anything and everything goes - as long as it goes badly. Which of the following works can you view at MOBA?

Answer: All these can be seen

They ALL sound like garbage to me, but then I failed Art Appreciation 101 in reform school.

From its beginnings in 1993, MOBA has striven to bring the worst art to the most people. Some of the collections are "Blue People", ""Poor Traits", and "In the Nood". The museum is located in Somerville MA.
2. You don't have to be crazy to play here, but it may help! The Glore Psychiatric Museum is located on the former grounds of which institution?

Answer: State Lunatic Asylum No. 2 - Missouri

The Glore Museum was established in 1968 on the grounds of Missouri's State Lunatic Asylum No.2, and occupies three floors. This very unusual exhibit offers a history of treatment methods for the mentally ill from the 1600s to the near present day. I was impressed by the high marks and positive comments the museum received from numerous visitors. Several comments advised NOT taking younger children.

The Lecter house is fictitious. Bethlem and Bellevue Hospitals are real and highly respected institutions.
3. This question may throw you a curveball. Don't let it bust your concentration; you might end up seeing double. At the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices (MQMD), you could see displays on all sorts of strange devices. Some were silly, most were worthless, and a few were downright deadly! Nearly all the items were ultimately banned from public sale. Which of the following was MOST RECENTLY available for sale to the public?

Answer: Foot operated breast enlarger - to enhance the curves

This particular breast enlarger was offered until about 1976, and left the user with bruises and a $10 lighter wallet. Similar items to enhance/enlarge/extend/etc various body areas are still being sold today. The prostate gland warmer (shudder!) was sold ca. 1918; the "Revigator" water crock touted radioactive drinking water until about 1925; while the violet ray generator sold until about 1950.

Sadly, the MQMD closed its doors in 2002. The collection was donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul, and many items are still displayed there. In any case, the basic rule for any odd contraption that sounds too good to be true is "caveat emptor" - buyer beware.
4. A rough go so far? Then let's lighten things up a bit with an easier question. According to their web page, this museum has both an Urban Gallery and a "Boneyard" that serves as an "inspiration to fascinated artists, students, historians and designers". Name the organization.

Answer: The Neon Museum

The Neon Museum is in Las Vegas. The Urban Gallery portion consists of nine restored signs displayed on a FREE, self-guided 24/7 walking tour of downtown. That's the only FREE 24/7 museum tour on earth, as far as I know!

The Boneyard portion is a guided, paid tour of 150+ signs from such famous attractions as Caesar's Palace, The Stardust, and The Golden Nugget. Many of the signs here are still being restored. Day tours are moderately priced; night trips cost about 33% more. Obviously, night trips offer a better view of the gaudy illumination.

There's no CID or AMCO as explained in the choices. The so-called Body Farm in Knoxville is real, but artists and designers don't go there for inspiration. Not for their day jobs, at least!
5. More than 500,000 visitors every year learn about the history of dog collars from medieval to Victorian times. Wow, doesn't this sound exciting? Well, be noble, build up your cur-age, and pack your litter off to this location to see more! Where on earth is this place?

Answer: Leeds Castle Dog Collar Museum, Kent, England

The collars were presented to Leeds Castle in 1979, and the collection is only one of its features. There are also formal gardens, a vineyard and aviary, and a golf course. The first castle on the site was built ca. 1119, and the location has an interesting history.

Dogpatch USA was a real theme park, opened in 1968; abandoned in 1993. Doggy Trot and the Hot Dog Museum are merely doggerel. I have eaten some hot dogs that seemed to stay with me for decades! Maybe some spicy mustard would have helped.
6. Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Machines is located in Farmington Hills Michigan, and contains thousands of mechanical oddities. One of the more bizarre items is "Dr. Ralph Bingenpurge". For about 50 cents, what will the good doctor do to entertain you?

Answer: Vomit

Ralph is actually a coin operated machine, as shown on a "Modern Marvels" television episode; he looks quite realistic. Doc's last name should have revealed all, gastronomically speaking.
7. Quit being distracted by all that junk e-mail, and get on with the quiz! This unusual museum is located in Austin Minnesota, and has a World War 2 exhibit and a Monty Python Tribute, as well as the ubiquitous gift shop. What epicurean delight does this exhibit praise?

Answer: Spam

Spam - the meat, not the junk mail - has been around since 1937. It went to war with US troops in the 1940's and became the pork butt of jokes like "Spam - ham that failed its physical". Residents of Guam eat the most Spam - about 16 tins per capita annually. Hawaii is close behind; Burger King and Jack in the Box franchises there feature Spam. Israel produced a kosher version of Spam called "Loof" until 2011.

The junk mail (spam?)and Monty Python comments should have clued you in.
Tha-tha-That's All, Folks!
8. This museum was founded in 1986 by the Asst. Attorney General of Wisconsin to celebrate a spicy condiment (or was it the Colonel, in the kitchen?). Starting small with about a dozen jars, the exhibit has grown to about 5500 varieties. On August 3rd (its official recognition "Day") a grand picnic includes music, games, and FREE HOT DOGS! What is the museum?

Answer: The National Mustard Museum

The words "spicy", "free hot dogs", and "the Colonel in the kitchen", should have handed you the answer on a paper picnic plate! OK - The "House of Relish" might be a distant runner-up. Sorry, no prize for 2nd place. The Museum touts mustard as the "King of Condiments" and has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show and others. You can purchase mustard related paraphernalia in the gift shop. Items such as cups and hats with the "Poupon U" logo are specially interesting.

NOTE: Do NOT confuse the National Mustard Museum with a nearby condiment competitor, the world's "Largest Catsup Bottle", located in Collinsville IL.
9. This stop may be a bit morbid for the entire school; you may need to cover the eyes of small fry. But you've almost scaled this question - you must be dying for it all to end. Speaking of dying, which of the below funerary exhibits is NOT displayed at the National Museum of Funeral History (NMFH)?

Answer: Funerals for fish

No fish funerals here! "School", "fry", "scale" - surely you got this one correct? Located in Houston TX, the NMFH was founded in 1992, and worked closely with the Vatican when creating the 5000 square feet Papal exhibit. The Unknown Soldiers exhibit emphasizes the history, tradition, and reverence of the actual Arlington VA site. Japanese Funerals explores customs of the far East. Children under 3 are admitted free; a bit ironic, it seems.
Remember - any day above ground is a good one.
10. Here's a chance to redeem your odd museum honor. Get this one right and you go to the head of the class. Miss it and you're shafted! The Iceland Phallological Museum in Reykjavik displays over 215 of these, including specimens from whales, polar bears, walrus, and humans. What are we referring to?

Answer: Male 'members" - i.e. penises

If you missed this one, shame on you - note the root word of the museum's name. This extremely unusual exhibit opened in Iceland's capital city in 1997. A recent listing shows 208 honorary members of the museum. Presumably, none of these members' members are on display. Author's note - the whale section gave me an inferiority complex. Seems odd that there are no codpieces on display.
