I love to spend time in Museums whenever I travel. While many museums have large and varied artworks and artifacts, I often prefer some of the smaller and more specialized museums. Here is a mixture of some of my favorites!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This museum is home to an outstanding collection of Islamic, Assyrian, Greek and other near eastern art. Highlights include the Pergamon Altar and the Ishtar Gate. Located on the Museum Island, where is it?

Answer: Berlin, Germany

The Museum Island (Museuminsel) is in the heart of Berlin and has a number of excellent museums, of which the Pergamon Museum is probably the best known.
2. Founded shortly after World War II, a high point in the Roman-Germanic museum is the Dionysus Mosaic, from a floor over 2000 years old. This museum shares a plaza with one of the world's largest Gothic cathedrals. You are in:

Answer: Cologne

Cologne was almost levelled by allied bombing in World War II. When digging up the rubble, many of the antiquities in this museum were discovered, including the Dionysus Mosaic. While at the Cathedral, look around you and you will see everything was rebuilt after the war - except the Cathedral, which escaped major damage, even though the train station next to it was a primary target.

A miracle?
3. The Heineken Museum is a former brewery in the heart of this "Venice of the North" and stands along one of the many canals. If you want to learn about the art of brewing beer, make a trip to this city.

Answer: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Should you go, you must get your ticket early on the morning of the day on which you take a tour - because it is a very popular attraction. They tell you to allow about 2 hours, but most of that time will be spent in the beerhall quaffing copious quantities of their wares!
4. With a seemingly endless facade of columns, The Haus der Kunst in this city contains an outstanding collection of Modern Art by such artists as Paul Klee along with many temporary exhibitions

Answer: Munich, Germany

This building was designed by Paul Ludwig Troost, one of Hitler's architects. It is a typical example of Nazi architecture.
5. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2002, the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum houses what was a large collection of the noted Swiss industrialist of the same name. The artwork covers a variety of works from many periods and is located here:

Answer: Madrid, Spain

Thyssen was married to a former Miss Spain, and it was she who convinced him to house his collection in Madrid and to restore the villa in which it is now displayed. This museum is near the Prado and Queen Sofia museums - be sure to get a pass to visit all three!
6. Pablo Picasso transformed the artworld with his paintings and sculpture. Housed in the Hôtel Salé, the Picasso Museum in this city is completely devoted to the artist and includes over 200 paintings, over 190 sculptures, ceramics and some 3000 drawings by the late artist.

Answer: Paris, France

The museum is in a beautiful 17th century mansion, and the collection was provided by the Picasso estate in order to satisfy death taxes due to the French government.
7. While on Picasso, his painting "The Destruction of Guernica" is certainly one of the greatest artworks of the twentieth century. It is housed in the Reina Sofia Museum, in this city that is also the home to the Prado:

Answer: Madrid, Spain

Picasso's moving depiction of the horrors unleashed by the merciless bombing of a small, defenseless Basque town by Hitler, Mussolini and Franco could not be returned to Spain until after Franco was gone, pursuant to the terms of Picasso's will. It was returned to the Prado in 1981 after the restoration of the monarchy.
8. The House of Rubens contains an impressive collection of Peter Paul Rubens work as well as served as the artist's residence until his death in 1640. It is located just a "hand's" throw from the Brabo Fountain in this city.

Answer: Antwerp, Belgium

The "hand's" throw refers to the Brabo Fountain itself, which depicts a Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo, who, according to legend, killed a terrible giant who extracted tolls from sailors on the Scheldt river by threatening to cut of their hand if they did not pay. Brabo killed the giant and threw his hand into the river.

As an aside, the name Antwerp is thought by some to come from a corruption of the Dutch words for Hand Throw, although this is more like a nice addendum to the Brabo legend.
9. Opened in 2001 with an exhibit based on Gertrud Bleichröder's diary, the Jewish Museum in this city is still building a collection to show the 2000 year history of Jews in Germany. It is located in this city:

Answer: Berlin

It is a rare opportunity to see a museum in the process of development. The purpose of the museum is not to center on the Holocaust, rather to look at the complete history of Jews in the German culture.
10. Comprised of the Richelieu, Denon and Sully divisions, this huge collection includes Islamic art; Italian, French and Spanish sculpture, Etruscan and Roman antiquities, and a host of other items. While walking through this museum, notice how La Joconde's eyes seem to follow you around the room. Of course you will be in which city?

Answer: Paris, France

Of course we are referring to the Louvre. The orignal purpose of the building was as a fortress in medieval times - some 800 years ago - and was later used as a palace for French Kings. It has been in use as a museum since 1793. "La Joconde" is how the French refer to the Mona Lisa.
