Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shortly after hearing of the Titanic's sinking, Congress called forth a panel to determine what caused this "unsinkable" ship to falter. What senator was put in charge of those committee hearings?

Answer: William Alden Smith

William Alden Smith, senator from Michigan, was chosen to head the Senate hearings. Wyn Craig Wade is actually the author of the book "The Titanic: End of a Dream", which is the main source of the information presented in this quiz. Both Newland and Reed were involved in the Senate hearings.
2. Twenty-four percent of what group of people survived the sinking?

Answer: Crew

25% of those travelling in steerage were saved, against 44% of those in second and 60% in first class.
3. Who was president of the United States when the Titanic sank?

Answer: William Howard Taft

Taft, TR's successor, was President.
4. Where were the hearings in New York held?

Answer: Waldorf-Astoria

The meetings, which began on April 19th, were held in the East room of the Waldorf-Astoria.
5. Newspaper reporters were NOT allowed anywhere near the hearings.

Answer: False

Smith, in fact, decided that all information gathered from the meetings needed to be made public at once, so he invited the press.
6. In what lifeboat did J. Bruce Ismay leave the Titanic?

Answer: Starboard collapsible

Ismay said he left in the last lifeboat leaving the ship.
7. Who presented Arthur Henry Rostron, captain of the Carpathia, a cup as an award for his heroism?

Answer: Mrs. J.J. ("Unsinkable Molly") Brown

Mrs. Brown presented Capt. Rostron with the cup that was purchased by a collection taken from among the survivors. President Taft also awarded Capt. Rostron with the American Cross of Honor.
8. True or False: Senator Smith learned from a passenger that the sailors testing the temperature of the water used tap water instead of ocean water for the test.

Answer: true

Mrs. Mahala Douglas had observed a sailor filling a bucket with tap water. This bucket was to be used to test the temperature of the ocean to keep a tab on the possibility of icebergs. Smith had learned from Second Officer Lightoller that only six of the lifeboats had been tested in the water, but this was because they had been previously tested with Harland and Wolff.

However, Smith also learned from investigation that these tests were never fully explained to the crew, so they didn't know how to properly work the boats.
9. How was it believed at the time that John Jacob Astor died?

Answer: crushed by a funnel

John Jacob Astor's body was brought home on the MacKay-Bennett, crushed and covered in soot. He was only identifiable by his large diamond ring and $4000 in his pocket. There is now some debate about whether this is actually how he died.
10. During the hearings, much discussion and questioning revolved around the lack of binoculars for the crew in the crow's nest. What was reason given that the crow's nest of the Titanic had no binoculars?

Answer: The binoculars were taken over by the bridge

Frederick Fleet, the sailor in the crow's nest at the time when iceberg was spotted, said that the six pairs of binoculars the Titanic had had all been taken over by the officers in the bridge.
