Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two men held the Guinness World Record for the shortest reigning monarch. How long did Louis-Antoine of France and Crown Prince Luís Filipe of Portugal each spend in the top job?

Answer: 20 minutes

Louis-Antoine briefly became King Louis XIX of France after the July Revolution in 1830. His father, Charles X, had reluctantly abdicated in the face of much opposition to his rule. Twenty minutes later, Louis-Antoine also abdicated and renounced his claim to the throne.

In 1908, King Carlos I of Portugal was returning home with his family in an open carriage. Two members of the crowd fired at the carriage as it passed down the street. The king was killed instantly. His eldest son and heir, Luís Filipe, was severely wounded. The carriage was taken to a nearby Naval Arsenal where he died twenty minutes after his father.
2. William Henry Harrison was the first American president to die in office and held the record for the shortest presidency up to the 21st century. What happened to him?

Answer: He died of pneumonia.

In 1841, William Henry Harrison became the ninth president of the United States. His inauguration speech lasted a whopping two hours in cold and rainy conditions. He contracted a cold, which later developed into pneumonia. He died from the illness just 32 days after he became president.

His wife, Anna Harrison was preparing to leave their home in Ohio to move to Washington D.C. when she heard the news that her husband had died.
3. Berengaria of Castile became queen for a short time in 1217. What bizarre accident enabled Berengaria to rule?

Answer: A roof tile hit her brother (the king) on the head and he died.

Berengaria of Castile acted as regent for her younger brother, who became king at just 10 years old. When he was 13, a roof tile came loose and hit his head. Berengaria kept his death a secret because she was worried that her former husband - and King of Leon - would try to take the throne.

She declared herself queen until her son, Ferdinand arrived at court. Three months after she became queen, she abdicated in favour of Ferdinand becoming the ruler of Castile.
4. Lady Jane Grey briefly ruled over England in 1553 before being executed in 1554. How long did she reign?

Answer: 9 days

In England in 1553, Henry VIII's only son, Edward VI was on his last legs. If Edward, died, the throne would have probably passed straight to his half-sister Mary. The problem for Edward and his supporters was that Mary was Catholic. At the time, England was divided over Catholicism and Protestantism.

The Duke of Northumberland persuaded Edward to declare his sister Mary an illegitimate heir. Instead, he presented Lady Jane Grey - fifth in line to the throne and a Protestant - as a preferable successor. Upon Edward's death, she reigned for nine days before Mary returned with overwhelming support.
5. One of the shortest reigning Catholic popes held the title for just 13 days. Which pope died of malaria in 1590?

Answer: Pope Urban VII

Giambattista Castagna was born in Rome in 1521. On 15th September 1590, he was elected pope and chose the name Urban VII. Unfortunately, he died of malaria on September 27th, less than two weeks after being appointed.

Stephen II was - according to some - pope for an even shorter time. In 752, he was elected to the position, but he died of apoplexy two days later. Over time, his name was scratched from the record books because he was not consecrated. As a result, subsequent Pope Stephens sometimes have two numbers after their name: one if the pope-elect has been included and one if he has not.
6. The Taichang Emperor died after only one month on the throne in 1620. He was one of the last emperors in his dynasty. Which one?

Answer: Ming Dynasty

The Taichang Emperor was the 14th and one of the last in China's Ming Dynasty. He took the throne upon the death of his father, but died a month later. The circumstances of his death have a mystery attached to them. Not long after he became emperor, Taichang became ill with severe diarrhoea.

After being sick for some time, a court official named Li Kezhou offered the Taichang a 'red pill' that would cure his illness. The emperor took the pill and reported feeling much better, so he took another that afternoon.

He was found dead the following morning.
7. As the Third Reich crumbled in 1945, who became Chancellor of Germany for a day after the death of Adolf Hitler?

Answer: Joseph Goebbels

Joseph Goebbels had been minister of propaganda in Germany since 1933. By 1945, the Nazis were headed for defeat and, knowing this, Adolf Hitler committed suicide on 30th April. In his will, he named Admiral Karl Donitz the head of state and Joseph Goebbels as the chancellor - the head of government. Goebbels' position lasted a day. On 1st May, he and his wife poisoned their six children and then also committed suicide.

Karl Kaufmann was one of the founding members of the National Socialist German Workers' (Nazi) Party. Josef Mengele was an infamous physician at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Manfred von Richthofen was the World War I fighter pilot known as the Red Baron.
8. How old was Napoleon II when he became Emperor of France after the events of the Battle of Waterloo?

Answer: 4

Born in 1811 to the title of King of Rome, Napoléon-François-Charles-Joseph Bonaparte, duke von Reichstadt was the only son of Emperor Napoleon I. As the French empire started to collapse, his father lost support and was forced to abdicate in 1814. In 1815, however, Napoleon I came back with a vengeance and reclaimed his empire. His rule was fleeting thanks to his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo.

The emperor abdicated again on 22nd June 1815, initially leaving the throne to the young Napoleon II. The title didn't last long: Napoleon I and his descendents were soon excluded from succession.
9. Rognvaldr Olafsson was temporarily the ruler of the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Looking at a modern map, where was his kingdom?

Answer: Between Scotland and Ireland

The Kingdom of Mann and the Isles existed on the islands in the Irish Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. Part of the Viking world, Rognvaldr Olafsson ruled over the islands for less than a month in 1249. He ascended to the throne after his older brother was shipwrecked off the coast of Shetland and died. A few weeks after he took the top job, a mysterious knight named Ivarr killed him.
10. Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev was technically the King of Nepal for three days, though he spent that time in a coma. In which year did the Nepalese royal massacre occur?

Answer: 2001

On the evening of June 1st 2001, members of the Nepalese royal family were having dinner. According to reports, the Crown Prince Dipendra argued with his parents over the woman he intended to marry. The argument escalated to the point where the prince went to fetch a gun.

He shot and killed both the king and queen, as well as other members of the royal family. He then shot himself, but remained in a coma for three days. Despite his actions, the privy council declared Dipendra King of Nepal as he was the next in line to the throne.

He died as a result of his injuries on 4th June 2001.
