1. This man was not even registered as a voter and was uninvolved in politics until 2008. By August 2013 he became president of his landlocked country in central South America. Who became a new face among world presidents?

Answer: Horacio Cartes

Cartes pursued studies in aeronautical engineering in America. As a young man of 19 years he started a currency exchange business that was extremely successful. He went on to buy or help establish 25 companies. Interestingly he served jail time while under investigation for currency fraud.

In one case the case was dropped and in the other he was cleared by the court. Already a wealthy man, he stated in his inaugural speech that he had not entered politics as a career or to get wealthier but rather to serve his people.

He was elected president of Paraguay on August 15, 2013.
2. Which former bus driver of Venezuela joined the new faces among world presidents in 2013?

Answer: Nicholas Maduro

Nicholas Maduro was employed as a bus driver for many years after leaving school. His political career began in the 1980s when he became an unofficial trade unionist for bus drivers of the Caracas Metro system. In the 1990s he founded a movement which was in support of Hugo Chavez who ran for presidency in 1998. Maduro served on the National Assembly and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In October of 2012, Maduro was appointed by Chavez as vice president.

When Chavez announced that he was once again battling cancer he requested that should he succumb the people should vote for Maduro to replace him. Maduro became president on April 14, 2013.

Tony Abbott's father was English and his mother Australian. He was born in London in 1957 and moved to Sydney with his parents in 1960. He was a Rhodes scholar at the Queen's College, Oxford where he pursued a number of degrees. Interestingly, Abbott became a seminarian with the intention of entering the priesthood.

However, after training for some time he came to the conclusion that he would not be an effective priest. In the 1990s he became actively involved in politics and served in varied capacities.

Dilma Rouseff became aware of the political situation in her country when she attended the Central State High School in the 1960s. After leaving school she became involved in guerrilla activities. In 1970 Rouseff was arrested and tortured. She was released from prison in 1972.

Rouseff became president of Brazil on January 1, 2011, becoming not just a new face among world presidents but also the first female to preside over Brazil.

Hernandez was a lawyer as well as a notary, having studied social and legal sciences and has a master's degree in Public Administration. He was also involved in coffee production and was the owner of hotels in Honduras.

Alexander Stubb became leader of the National Coalition Party in 2014. He served in several capacities before becoming prime minister. Stubb was a lover of sports and competed in marathons as well as triathlons.

Benigno Aquino III was from a family of politicians. His great grandfather, grandfather and father were all involved in politics in one way or the other. His father served as president and his mother was a senator. Aquino was the first bachelor to be elected president of the Philippines, as well as the third youngest elected president and the second president who is a teetotaller.
