Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These four presidents all served during the years 1977 - 2001. Three of them were naturally left-handed; which was the only right-hander?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

After Carter, the next three presidents were all natural left-handers, although Reagan was forced to write with his right hand while at school, which is why photographs sometimes show him signing official documents right-handed.
2. Which president saw the most number of states admitted to the Union during his presidency?

Answer: Benjamin Harrison

Six states were admitted during Harrison's term: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming.
3. Which of the following presidents did NOT die on July 4th?

Answer: Zachary Taylor

Taylor died on July 9, 1850.
4. It is sometimes claimed that there is a curse on American presidents elected in a zero year. It is a fact that seven presidents in a row elected in a zero year died in office. Who was the first of the seven?

Answer: William Henry Harrison

The first president to die in office, he was elected in 1840. Every president after him elected or re-elected in a zero year died in office (including the other options shown here), until Reagan in 1980. Reagan was shot, but survived.
5. Up until the end of the twentieth century, who was the only US president to die in office, who had NOT been elected or re-elected in a "zero year" - a year ending in the number zero?

Answer: Zachary Taylor

Taylor died in a "zero year" - 1850 - but was elected in 1848. Garfield was elected in 1880, Roosevelt re-elected in 1940, and Kennedy in 1960.
6. Which of these US presidents survived more than one assassination attempt?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Ford had two attempts on his life, both in September 1975: one on the 6th and the other on the 22nd. Both took place in California. Kennedy and Garfield each had one attempt on their lives, both of which succeeded. Reagan survived the only attempt on his life.
7. It is well known that Grover Cleveland is the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms - at least up until the end of the twentieth century. However, he is not the only president to attempt such a feat. Which of the following did NOT run for a non-consecutive term?

Answer: Andrew Jackson

The 13 original US colonies or states were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
9. At which of the following US colleges did William H Taft, Gerald Ford, George H W Bush, Bill Clinton and George W Bush all study?
