Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Citroën
Answer: DS
The DS was one of the most influential cars ever built.
When it first appeared, it contained mechanical innovations that took the motor world by storm.
It was the first car to use hydraulics for the suspension, and the hydro-pneumatic suspension gave it a superior ride quality. It was said the system was so good the DS could be driven with just three wheels on the road.
It was also a beautiful car to look at and almost 1.5m were made between 1955 and 1977.
The model name was based on the way DS sounds in French, déesse, which is also their word for "goddess".
2. Ferrari
Answer: Testarossa
The Ferrari Testarossa was another beautiful, sporty, car from the Italian maker.
It was in production from 1984 to 1996 and about 10,000 were made.
Initially in the UK they cost about £63,000, while in the USA they cost around $181,000 - not that Don Johnson, had to pay for his silver 1989 Testarossa, he was given it by Enzo Ferrari, who was a fan of "Miami Vice".
3. Ford
Answer: Crown Victoria
The Crown Victoria was loved by law enforcement organisations, which got a beefed-up version. Taxi drivers also loved the cars for their comfort and reliability.
The 'Crown Vic' was in production from 1991 to 2011.
In police interceptor mode, the car was widely used in the USA and Canada and had a top speed of 129mph, much faster than the civilian spec.
Just a note for the pedants, Ford also used the name Crown Victoria for cars in 1955 and 1956 and again from 1980 to 1991.
4. Honda
Answer: Civic
The Honda Civic went into production in 1972 and continued through a number of generations. It was still in production at the time this quiz was written in November 2017.
In that time, in excess of 16.5 million had been sold, making it the best-selling car model of all time.
Although Japanese by origin, Honda cars have been built worldwide, including the UK, the USA and Canada.
5. De Tomaso
Answer: Pantera
De Thomaso was an Italian company that began making cars in 1959.
Most of their cars had low production numbers and the Pantera - Italian for Panther - was to be their biggest seller. More than 7,000 were sold between 1971 and 1991.
The Pantera was designed by Tom Tjaarda, an American, and used Ford engines from the outset.
6. Jaguar
Answer: E-Type
Some say the Jaguar E-Type was the most beautiful car ever built. Frank Sinatra took one look and said: "I want that car, and I want it now".
Even rival sports car makers were envious of the E-Type's long bonnet and rounded cockpit. Enzo Ferrari called it "the most beautiful car ever made" - and he would know, having designed many fantastic looking cars himself.
Just 72,500 E-Types were made between 1961 and 1974.
The E-Type contained many industry innovations and with a top sped of 150mph could blow the opposition away.
7. Lincoln
Answer: Continental
The Continental was Lincoln's longest running model name. Some 1.6m were shifted over nine generations from 1940.
Lincoln, an offshoot of Ford, made luxury cars, and the Continental was initially a personal vehicle for Ford Motor Company president Edsel Ford.
8. Mercury
Answer: Grand Marquis
Between 1983 and 2011, about 2.4m were made in four generations.
Mercury was a Ford company and its cars were targeted at the luxury market.
9. Hindustan
Answer: Ambassador
For many years, the Hindustan Ambassador was an ubiquitous sight on India's road.
Between 1958 and 2014, 4m Ambassadors were made. They were practically a carbon copy of the British Morris Oxford. By 2014, though, they were totally outdated.
10. DeLorean
Answer: DMC-12
Marty McFly loved his DeLorean in the "Back To The Future" movies, and it was a beautiful car. It was just a pity about the reliability.
The DMCs were made in a factory at Dunmurry near Belfast after former General Motors boss John DeLorean persuaded (some say conned) the UK Government into providing the money - £100 millon.
At that time, Northern Ireland was mired in violence and the Government's hope was that by improving economic conditions more peaceful times would come.
In 1981 and 1982, 9,200 of the aluminium-bodied DeLoreans, with their futuristic 'gullwing' doors, were made.
The car was intended for the American market, so all production vehicles were left-hand drive
The company folded in 1982 after DeLorean's arrest for alleged drugs possession.
Many DeLoreans have been preserved and rebuilt by enthusiasts, and in 1995 the rights were acquired by an American company to build new DMC12s in Texas.
