Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in the Ticino Canton of Switzerland, what is the alternative name of the Contra Dam?

Answer: Verzasca Dam

The jump made famous from the opening scenes of the 1995 film "Goldeneye", Verzasca Dam quickly saw a spike in popularity to become one of the more frequented bungee sites in Europe. It inevitably became a privately-owned jump spot. The jump here is 220m down.

Found in the Ticino Canton of Southern Switzerland (think the Italian border), Verzasca/Contra Dam is one of the largest in the nation and flows towards Lake Maggiore, one of the largest lakes in Italy.
2. At the time of its opening, what observation tower (depicted) became home to the world's highest commercial tower bungee?

Answer: Macau Tower

In addition to hosting a bungee jump, the Macau Tower is also known for its skywalk which perches visitors on the outer rim of the observation decks, allowing them to walk around the edge. The bungee, operated by popular bungee entrepreneur A. J. Hackett, has a 233m drop.

Macau Tower is 338m from its base to the top of its spire making it one of the tallest buildings in the territory. Some of the tallest skyscrapers, the Grand Lisboa Hotel and Casino and the Venetian Macau, are similarly tall, but find fame from their distinctive architecture (in the case of the former) or in the amount of floorspace (in the case of the latter). Macau Tower opened in 2001.
3. The Nevis Highwire Platform can be found in what nation?

Answer: New Zealand

Found near Queenstown on New Zealand's South Island, the Nevis Highwire Platform is strung between mountains over the Nevis River Valley. Anyone who treks out on a gondola to the platform is likely there to complete the 134m jump, one of the earliest commercialized jumps in the world after its opening.

It is one of the most famous sites for bungee in New Zealand which, in itself, is known for the activity because of the efforts of A. J. Hackett, who brought it back to his home country after a visit to Vanuatu.
4. This bridge between the nations of Zambia and Zimbabwe, known for its bungee jumps, is near what African natural wonder?

Answer: Victoria Falls

The aptly-named Victoria Falls Bridge sits atop the Zambezi River between two countries, not unlike the nearby Victoria Falls just upriver, and while it was originally built for rail travel in the 1900s, it eventually became a popular border crossing site for vehicles. Inevitably, it became a major tourist spot, one of the most-visited in both nations.

The Sheerwater bungee jump found on the bridge features a 111m drop and, if you're really interested in extreme drops, the Batoka Gorge swing is about a half hour east into Zambia.
5. If you're not afraid of anything, you could arrange for a volcano bungee into the crater of Villarrica, an active volcano found on which continent?

Answer: South America

Villarrica, found outside of the city of Pucón, quite a distance south of Santiago, is a volcano in the heart of the Andean Villarrica National Park. One of the nation's most active volcanoes, it seems like the perfect place NOT to perform a leap of faith tethered to a bungee cord, but sure enough, it's an activity that can be pursued in this adventurous, tourist destination in South America. Considering the obvious risk involved, it's been considered one of the most dangerous bungee excursions in the world.

At 350ft long, the jump is performed from a helicopter above the crater. Yes, there's magma. No, they don't pull you back in when it's done.
6. The viewing platform of the Donauturm is home to a popular bungee platform. The jump is made overlooking what European river?

Answer: Danube

Built in the 1960s in Donaupark, this observation tower sits on the Danube, and while it's found in the eastern reach of Vienna, it's visible form nearly anywhere in the city since it stretches to a height of 252m. This makes it one of the tallest buildings in the country.

The bungee platform is located on the first observation deck at a height of 152m and stretches eight meters out from the tower. With one step, you're out over the Donaustadt region.
7. Built as Africa's highest bridge, it's also been home to one of the world's highest commercial bungee jumps. Which of these is depicted?

Answer: Bloukrans Bridge

While there are many bridge jumps out there, the height of South Africa's Bloukrans Bridge (at 216m above the river below) makes it a particularly memorable one for avid fans of the activity. Built in the 1980s, Bloukrans was quickly scouted as an ideal bungee spot and has since become not only one of the highest for thrill-seekers, but one of the smoothest (partly due to the height). You only drop about three quarters of the way into the valley though.

Because of its significance, Bloukrans has also been home to several Guinness Record wins including 'most jumps in a 24 hour period' and 'oldest jumper'.
8. It may seem unreal, but people ascend these trees and then bungee from the tops. They can do so in Humboldt County in the northern reaches of what U.S. state?

Answer: California

The jump sites don't even need to be man-made! Instead, if you head to the mighty redwood forests found in Humboldt County's Redwood National and State Parks, you can have the opportunity not only to climb the protected trees, but to perform a harrowing descent through the woods while strapped to a bungee line.

The jump begins from a height of 200m, so it has all of the appeal of 'falling from a great height towards the ground', but it's also got that niche, unique angle too.
9. Built at the end of the nineteenth century, what narrow European canal, shown here, has since been used primarily by tourist boats and bungee jumpers?

Answer: Corinth Canal

Found on the Isthmus of Corinth, the Corinth Canal has been home to bungee jumping adventure tourists since 2002. Because of how narrow the canal actually is (just over 20m!), the setting provides for a very interesting jump; there's nowhere to go but down! Besides the bungee spot, the canal has also been used, historically, to allow ships to pass to and from the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf without passing all the way around a huge chunk of Southern Greece (the Peloponnese region).
10. Formerly the highest bridge in the world, the Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge in Colorado has featured ziplines and bungee jumps, sending visitors over what river nearly 300m below?

Answer: Arkansas River

After its completion in 1929, the Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge, extending Route 50 across the state of Colorado, became the highest suspension bridge on the globe (until 2001 when it was beaten by a Chinese bridge). This, of course, made it ideal for bungee enthusiasts since they could leap over the Arkansas River as it flows southeast.

The bridge is towards the center of the state in Fremont County near Cañon City.
