In the 17th century the county of Shropshire was a rich source of raw materials including coal, iron-ore, limestone and water. The abundance of these materials attracted early industrialists such as Abraham Darby I to the area. The Darby family operated kilns in Coalbrookdale and it was Abraham Darby III who first proposed the idea of a bridge across the gorge.

Construction began in 1779. The bridge was opened on 1st January 1781.
