Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's a beautiful day at Fort Somewhere and it's time for another day in the United States Army. Sergeant Bly tells Private Snuffy to go to the communications center and grab a box of chemlight batteries. What's the joke here?

Answer: Chemlights do not require batteries

Chemlights are activated by breaking and shaking them until they illuminate. They come in many different colors and even come in an infrared brand that can only be seen through the use of night vision devices.
2. While Private Snuffy is off getting chemlight batteries, Sergeant Bly realizes he needs a box of grid squares. In his military voice, he instructs Private Joe to grab him two boxes of grid squares from the maintenance section. What's the joke in this situation?

Answer: Grid squares are found on a map

This is one of my favorite pranks and was pulled on me as a young private. Grid squares are essential for map reading. They help get grids to places up to ten meters within the intended range.
3. Sergeant Bly instructs Private Jones to go to the maintenance shop and grab R2D2. Did he pull one over on Private Jones?

Answer: No

R2D2 is the nickname of the mobile grease container. This handy tool helps with greasing vehicles and doing track tension on tanks. It gets its name from the robot from Star Wars because it looks just like it. Most new privates think this is just another evil prank.
4. Sergeant Bly is starting to feel bad about all the pranks he's played so far. He gets serious for a moment and instructs Private Slim to retrieve the front slope indicator from the mechanics. What is the prank here?

Answer: The front slope doesn't need to be indicated; it's right in front of you on the tank

The front slope is the forward most part of a tank, usually where the driver slides onto when he gets out of his driver's hole. It is also another common place for soldiers to sit and eat chow or just shoot the breeze.
5. Sergeant Bly is getting ready to shoot a Tank Table VIII exercise with his brand new 2nd Lieutenant Tank Commander. After the daytime exercise, the crew dismounts the tank to get debriefed. Lieutenant Smiley can't seem to find his soft cap. "Has anyone seen my soft cap"? Lieutenant Smiley asks. Your reply would likely be what?

Answer: "Look down range about 3000 meters."

Here's another good one. This is the best way to break in a brand new lieutenant. The loader of the tank will sneakily place the lieutenant's hat in the gun tube and then load a round. When the gunner fires the round, it's so long soft cap.
6. Sergeant Bly needs his crew to do some serious maintenance on the tank after firing the Tank Table VIII exercise. He instructs Private Wrong to crawl around the tank with a hammer and lightly tap the hull. "Any hollow sounds you find need to be marked with an X with this piece of chalk" bellows Sergeant Bly. What is the prank in this situation?

Answer: There will be white X's everywhere on the tank due to its natural hollow sound when hit

I've walked into the unit motor pool many times to see tanks and vehicles with white Xs everywhere. Talk about embarrassing.
7. Sergeant Bly takes his young group of soldiers to the M16 range to qualify. Private Nino asks Sergeant Bly for his weapon. Sergeant Bly hands Private Nino's weapon to him with a smirk on his face and says, "Good luck." Private Nino attempts to fire the weapon but nothing happens. He turns and looks at his trustworthy NCO only to find him laughing and tossing a shiny metal object up in the air and catching it. What just happened?

Answer: Sergeant Bly removed the firing pin from the weapon

This has happened on more than one occasion. This is actually a learning tool instead of a cruel joke. Sergeant Bly was trying to make Private Nino understand the importance of inspecting every piece of equipment before using it.
8. Lieutenant Stan is both excited and nervous about his meeting with Colonel Heady. He swiftly picks up his beret and storms out the door. When he reports to Colonel Heady, he pulls off his beret and salutes. Colonel Heady returns his salute and says "Lieutenant Stan, what's wrong with your forehead"? Lieutenant Stan rubs his fingers on his forehead, looks at them, and notices a black mark on his fingers. Lieutenant Stan's reply should be what?

Answer: "My guys put shoe polish on the rim of my beret and it made this nasty black ring on my head, sir."

We only attempted this once and the officer in question did not find it as amusing as we did. The colonel on the other hand thought it was great.
9. After Lieutenant Stan returned from his brief meeting with the Colonel, he instructs Sergeant Bly that it's once again maintenance time for the tanks. Sergeant Bly agrees and tells Private Goodford to report to the maintenance shop to retrieve six new spark plugs for the tank engine. What's the prank here?

Answer: Tanks are run off of diesel or turbine engines and do not require spark plugs

Wow, here is another great one. This is the one that most soldiers, even seasoned veterans sometimes fall for. The tanks' diesel engine utilizes glow plugs instead of spark plugs.
10. After a long day of maintenance and weapons qualification, Sergeant Bly is ready to call it a day. As they begin to leave the motor pool, Sergeant Bly looks at his tank and notices something wrong. "Private Snuffy" he yells, "get up there and close those dog house doors". Private Snuffy turns to look at the tank and with a disgusted grunt agrees. What is the prank in this situation?

Answer: No prank, there really is a piece on the tank called the dog house doors

The dog house doors are two metal pieces that protect the gunners' sight. They close from the inside of the tank by pulling on two levers. I hope you enjoyed this quiz and if you ever join the Army, I just prepared you for some common pranks.
