1. One of the units from which the modern 75th Ranger Regiment derives its lineage is Merrill's Marauders. What was the Marauder's official unit designation?

Answer: 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional)

Merrill's Marauders had the distinction of having every soldier in the unit awarded the Bronze Star medal for valor, and earning the Distinguished Unit Citation for their gallantry and determination.
2. One detachment of 2nd Battalion Rangers scaled which steep French cliffs on D-Day in 1944?

Answer: Pointe Du Hoc

President Reagan gave a moving speech from the top of these cliffs in 1984, on the 40th anniversary of D-Day. His speech and the assault on these cliffs is retold in the book "The Boys of Pointe Du Hoc."
3. A separate detachment of Rangers assaulted which one of the Normandy beachheads in support of the 29th Infantry Division?

Answer: Omaha

When the assault on the Dog White sector of this beachhead stalled, General Norman Cota approached Major Max Schneider, Commander of the 5th Ranger Battalion. General Cota asked what unit this and the reply was, "The 5th Ranger Battalion, sir." To which Cota replied, "Well G_ddamn it, Rangers lead the way!" This phrase, "Rangers Lead the Way", has been adopted as the motto of the modern 75th Ranger Regiment.
4. The 6th Ranger Battalion executed one of the largest POW rescues in modern military history. From which Japanese POW camp did the Rangers rescue over 500 of their fellow soldiers?

Answer: Cabanatuan

This mission was successful due to the excellent training and planning of the Rangers as well as the help of the Filipino guerrilla forces. This story is retold in the excellent film "The Great Raid", starring Benjamin Bratt.
5. During the Korean War, the Rangers played an important role in deep penetration raids and other specialized missions. Which distinguished American hero led the 8th Ranger Company which would become the model for all other Ranger units during this conflict?

Answer: 2nd Lieutenant Ralph Puckett

Though consistently outnumbered, the Rangers in the Korean War relied on their stealth, cunning, and raw courage to change the tide of battles. Ranger Puckett set the standard for future Ranger officers by leading from the front and inspiring esprit de corps amongst his warriors.
6. The war in Vietnam gave the Rangers yet another opportunity to prove their courage and professionalism under fire. In this war, the Rangers often worked in small units called LRRP teams. What do the initials LRRP stand for?

Answer: Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol

LRRPs did much more than "sneek and peek" in Vietnam. They were also tasked with hunter/killer, sniper, tracking, fire support, and other missions more well suited to small, mobile, highly trained teams.
7. Operation Eagle Claw was the first large scale mission to put Rangers back into action following the conclusion of the war in Vietnam. What was the objective of Operation Eagle Claw?

Answer: To rescue American hostages held in Iran

Though the primary job of securing the hostages belonged to Delta, Rangers were tasked with key security and support roles in this mission.

Answer: Grenada

The Rangers parachuted in from 500 feet to secure Point Salines airfield for the follow on forces. They also led raids against reinforced enemy positions and secured the campus where the American medical students were being held hostage by Cuban and Grenadian forces. The operational name of this mission was Urgent Fury.
9. In 1989, the entire Ranger Regiment was mobilized to participate in a Joint Services assault on which Central American country?

Answer: Panama

This mission was code named Operation Just Cause and had the stated objective of capturing General Manuel Noriega and restoring democratic rule in Panama.
10. In 1993, Task Force Ranger deployed to Somalia. What was the name of the Somali warlord this element tried, unsuccessfully, to apprehend?

Answer: Mohammed Farah Aidid

Though Task Force Ranger apprehended many of Aidid's top advisors, the warlord himself consistently slipped through their fingers. After the events of October 3, 1993, the National Command Authority lost interest in General Aidid and withdrew all forces from Somalia.
