Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which series was the first fully Australian built Valiant?

Answer: Ap5

The R and S series were mainly reassembled cars sent from the USA, the Ap5 was built at the new Tonsley Park car plant. AP means Australian Production.
2. How many Ap5 Valiants were produced?

Answer: 49,400

Just over 34,000 were sold in Australia, with the rest going to New Zealand. A very popular car in New Zealand, due to the good towing capacity.
3. The automatic gearbox offered with the Ap5 Valiant had what unusual feature?

Answer: Push button gear selection on dash

The Torqueflite gearbox was best gearbox ever made, till Chevrolet copied it in the late 70s. The push-buttons on the dash were a triumph in engineering and only in the last 3 years has the expensive sports-car industry caught on to how good the button on dash arrangement is.
4. In which Australian state were the Chrysler Valiants made?

Answer: South Australia

Valiants were built at Tonsley Park in Adelaide, South Australia from 1964 till 1981. Tonsley Park was a brand new car plant.
5. What was the cubic inch capacity of the six cylinder engine in the Valiants of 1963-66?

Answer: 225

The 225 was a slant six engine, meaning the block was on an angle, good for working on the exhaust, not so good with electrics. A massive engine that delivered great torque, this made the Valiant a great touring car and excellent towing vehicle.
6. What was the luxury version of the Ap5 and Ap6 called?

Answer: Regal

The Regal included such luxuries as a cigarette lighter, heater and air conditioning, an exterior sunshade and more stylish seats. The Statesman was the luxury Holden, Fairlane was the luxury Ford and the Monaro was a two door racing Holden.
7. By which name was the Valiant station-wagon called?

Answer: Safari

How apt considering the number of wagons sold and driven in the outback. Incidentally, the Chrysler Wayfarer was the first utility vehicle (ute), offered to the Australian public!
8. Which colour paint was the most popular on the Ap5-Ap6 Valiants?

Answer: White

Over 70 per cent of the Valiants were painted white, with the Ap6 getting a special acrylic enamel paint.
9. In mid 1965, the Ap6 Valiant was released, which were two of the design changes making it different to the Ap5?

Answer: The grille and the automatic selector

The grille was split in two by a nasty looking centrepiece and the amazing dashboard pushbutton selector was replaced by a boring column stalk shifter. Not great moves by the company and all keen enthusiasts seek the pushbutton automatic version.
10. The Ap6 was also available with a V8 option.

Answer: True

The first Australian made car to offer a V8, this 273 cubic inch V8 produced 180 hp and a top speed of over 100 mph. The same engine was in the American Plymouth Valiant.
