Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cracks can be found along the floor and ceiling of the House of Commons due to the slight tilt of which London landmark, renamed in 2012?

Answer: Elizabeth Tower

The Elizabeth Tower leans only about one-quarter of a degree to the northwest, but it is enough to show obvious cracks inside. It is believed that an underground parking lot and an extension to the London Underground is causing the tilt, which is slowly increasing - about one millimeter per year. I hope you didn't answer "Big Ben" - that is the name of the clock's hour bell, not the tower itself.
2. Known better as Tiger Hill Pagoda, the Huqiu Tower leans by three degrees in which country?

Answer: China

The tower is located in the city of Suzhou on Tiger Hill, is 154 feet tall and tilts due to the foundation being half rock and half earth. In 1957, concrete was pumped into the soil to prevent further tilting. During this process, Buddhist scriptures were found - one of which put the construction of the pagoda in the year 961 AD.
3. Which Dutch city, the resting place of artist Johannes Vermeer, features a church tower unwisely constructed on top of an old canal?

Answer: Delft

Delft's Oude Kerk (Old Church) bell tower was constructed between 1325 and 1350. The tower began to lean while still being built, the foundation consisting only of earth used to fill in part of the nearby canal. It was nearly torn down in the 1800s due to fears of it toppling.
4. The Nevyansk Tower in Russia leans by approximately three degrees, but this hardly makes it unique. Instead, this 18th century tower is surrounded by legends due to what oddity, unique among most buildings?

Answer: No idea why it was ever built

Nobody knows why or exactly when it was built. Legends regarding its purpose abound, ranging from a simple watchtower to secret laboratories, and that it was intentionally built at an angle. Soviet-era secret experiments have been claimed to have occurred in the tower as well.
5. Curiously, the pinnacle of this temple dedicated to Shiva remains perpendicular to the ground even though the building tilts wildly. What is the temple known as?

Answer: Leaning Temple of Huma

The temple is located in the village of Huma, in the Indian state of Orissa, and is part of a larger temple complex. It is believed flooding, or possibly an earthquake, caused the tower to lean, but the exact reason is unknown, as a few other temples within the same complex lean in the opposite direction.
6. Officially called Torre Nueva, which Spanish tower was demolished in 1892 because it was believed collapse was imminent?

Answer: Leaning Tower of Zaragoza

The tower already had a slight, but visible, lean after construction finished in 1504. When Napoleon besieged Zaragoza in 1808 and again in 1809, the tower was used for observation of the French forces. After demolition, most of the tower's bricks were used for the foundations of new houses.
7. Water can undermine even the best built towers. What water source is the reason the Bad Frankenhausen church tower leans?

Answer: Underground stream

Since 1640, the tower has been leaning further and further over. Today it leans nearly five degrees from vertical. All attempts to shore up the structure have failed, and the underground stream continues to erode the earth the tower was built on.
8. In May, 2008, engineers claimed to have stopped which famous tower from continuing to edge ever closer to collapse?

Answer: The Campanile of the Cathedral of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was stabilized in 2008, and engineers claim the tower should stand at least 200 more years. Efforts included removing earth from underneath the higher side, attaching stay cables, and removing the bells.
9. Capital Gate Tower, intentionally built leaning a whopping 18 degrees, can be found in which extremely affluent Middle Eastern capital city?

Answer: Abu Dhabi

In 2010, the Capital Gate Tower made a Guinness World Record - the "furthest leaning man-made tower". At 18 degrees, it leans nearly three degrees further than any other contender. Opened in 2011, it serves as a hotel as well as an office building.
10. In which North American city can you find Olympic Stadium, featuring the world's tallest intentionally leaning tower?

Answer: Montreal

The Tower of Montreal stands at 576 feet. The stadium was built for the 1976 Olympics, but the tower wasn't completed until 1977. The total cost of the stadium was just over $1.6 billion Canadian dollars ($1.2 billion US in 2017), and wasn't paid off until 2006.
