At the time Santos-Dumont made his first flight, the accomplishments of the Wright brothers were not well known. The Europeans, at the time, thought that Santos-Dumont was the first person in the world to fly in a heavier-than-air machine.
2. Alberto Santos-Dumont once commented to a friend about a specific problem that confronted him while flying his dirigible. His friend, Louis Cartier, invented something that solved the problem. What was this new invention?

Answer: The wristwatch

Santos-Dumont told Cartier how difficult it was to check his pocket-watch while steering his dirigible. So Cartier invented the first wristwatch in 1904 and presented it to his friend.

Answer: Jorge Newbury

Newbury was born in 1875 and was the son of an American dentist. He studied in the USA between 1891 and 1895. His teachers included Thomas Alva Edison. He made his first balloon flight in 1907, and his first flight in a plane in 1910. He, accompanied by two others, made the first balloon flight across the Andes.

His dream was to make the first flight across the Andes in a plane but he killed in a plane crash before he could accomplish this goal.

Though he made it across the Alps, Chavez lost control of the plane as he approached the landing site in Italy. The wings of the plane fell off and Chavez plummeted to the ground. He died four days later on 27 Sept 1910. He was 23 years old. His last words were reported to be "Higher. Always higher." In 1957 his remains were returned to Peru. Peru's International Airport is named after him.

Gustavo Saline Camiņa (pilot) and an artilleryman, who were fighting for the Constitutionalists army, dropped bombs from a biplane thus defeating two Federal gunboats. This was on 15 April 1914. A few weeks later the War in Europe started and such actions became common.

However from as early as 1911, Italian aviators were dropping bombs on Turkish-held areas in Libya, however these bombardments had only limited success.
