Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At a height of just over 554 feet, this is the world's tallest obelisk and tallest stone structure, and for a short period was the world's tallest building. To which notable American is it dedicated?

Answer: George Washington

The U.S. Congress first authorized a memorial to George Washington shortly after his death in 1799. Not until 1832, though, the centenary of his birth, was serious progress made. A competition was organized and a design finally chosen in 1836 and construction finally began in 1848. Work was completed in 1884 and the George Washington Monument dedicated the following year.
At this time, it was the tallest building in the world, a record it retained until completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889.
2. Unveiled in 1935 at the heart of the national capital, the 138-foot tall Freedom Monument is still the focal point of public meetings and official functions today. An important symbol of national sovereignty, it was built to commemorate soldiers killed during which European country's 1918-20 War of Independence?

Answer: Latvia

The granite, travertine and copper Freedom Monument is an important landmark at the heart of Riga, capital of Latvia. The sculptures around the base of the monument depict scenes from Latvian history. At the top is the copper figure of 'Liberty' holding three golden stars high above her head. When the Soviet Union occupied Latvia in 1940 there were plans to demolish the monument, but these were never carried out. From the unveiling of the statue in 1935 until 1940, a guard of honor was always present.

This was re-instated in 1992, and today tourists flock to see the ceremonial changing of the guard that occurs hourly between 9am and 6pm.
3. Continually guarded by an honorary escort, the 42-foot high granite obelisk of the Rizal Monument stands close to the point where the national patriot Jose Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896. An exact replica of the monument can also be seen in Madrid, Spain. The original can be found in the capital of which Asian country?

Answer: The Philippines

Originally called 'Motto Stella' (meaning "guiding star"), the building of the Rizal Monument began in 1908 and was completed five years later. The monument to the executed 35-year old Filipino nationalist hero stands in a square also named for him in central Manila, Philippines. A bronze statue of the man himself stands atop the mausoleum in which his remains are interred.
The changing of the Philippine Marine Corps' guard at the Rizal Monument is a daily attraction for tourists.
4. Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, is the home of numerous statues and memorials dedicated to the heroes of the Confederacy. The impressive monument in the photograph honours which man who was born in Kentucky and represented Mississippi in both houses of Congress before becoming U.S. Secretary of War in 1853?

Answer: Jefferson Davis

All four of the options are commemorated with statues along Monument Avenue in Richmond, although none quite as grand as that honoring the only president of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis.
Jefferson Finis Davis was born in either 1807 or 1808 in the small municipality of Fairview in western Kentucky. Here can be found the 'Jefferson Davis State Historic Site' and an obelisk built in his memory. He entered Congress as a representative for Mississippi in 1845 and two years later became a Senator for the same state. Four years as the 23rd U.S. Secretary of War during the administration of Franklin Pierce (1853-57) were followed by a further 4-year term in the Senate. A year after leaving the Senate, Davis became the first and, as it turned out, the only president of the Confederacy in February 1862, a role he occupied for just over three years.
Davis died aged 81 or 82 in New Orleans LA in 1889. The Jefferson Davis Presidential Library was opened in 1998 in Biloxi, Mississippi.
5. The 'Democracy Monument', commissioned in 1939 to commemorate the "1932 Revolution" is not that easy to get close to, situated as it is on a traffic circle on a very busy road. In recent decades the monument has served as a rallying point for democracy activists and protests here in 1976 sparked a military coup. In the capital of which Asian country can you find this monument?

Answer: Thailand

The Democracy Monument honoring the 1932 Siamese coup d'etat (or the "Siamese Revolution") is located in the centre of the multi-lane east-west Ratchadamnoen Klang Road in the centre of Bangkok, Thailand. Although difficult to reach on foot, the location of the monument here does mean that many tourists at least get to see it as they drive past.

Its unusual design also makes it quite a memorable landmark. Although the origins of the monument are mostly long forgotten, it has been the centerpiece of a number of mass student demonstrations since, first in 1973 and later in 1976, which led to a change of government. During the 1992 protests against the regime of General Suchinda Kraprayoon in 1992, numerous demonstrators were killed.
6. The photograph shows the 150-foot tall 'Melville Monument', built in 1823 and modeled on Trajan's Column in Rome. It was erected to honour Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, even though he was the last person to be impeached in the UK. It was for him that Dundas Island in British Columbia was named. In which city can you find Melville Monument?

Answer: Edinburgh

Born in the village of Arniston in Midlothian, near Edinburgh in 1742, Henry Dundas became the first British Secretary of State for War in 1794, a post he held until 1801. He had formerly been Home Secretary. At one point, Melville was so powerful that he was dubbed "The Uncrowned King of Scotland".
An MP since 1774, Dundas was impeached in 1806 for 'the misappropriation of public money', and although he was subsequently acquitted of all charges he never again held public office.
The Melville Monument stands in Saint Andrews Square in the heart of Edinburgh's 'New Town' area. On the east side of the same square stands Dundas House, his impressive former mansion before it became the headquarters of the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1825.
7. 'The Monument to Martyrs of the Revolution 1830' (pictured) stands in what is now called Martyrs' Square, and more than 400 fallen heroes lay in a crypt buried beneath the surrounding cobblestones. In which European capital city is this reminder of past sacrifices located?

Answer: Brussels

The neoclassical-style square in the centre of the Belgian capital, Brussels, was named 'Place Saint-Michel' after the city's patron saint when it was first laid out in the 1770s. The streets around the square were the scene of fierce fighting and numerous barricades during the Belgian Revolution that lasted from August 25, 1830 until July 14, 1831.

The end result was the secession of the southern states of the Kingdom of The Netherlands and the subsequent formation of the Kingdom of Belgium under King Leopold I, former Prince of Saxe-Cobourg & Gotha and Duke of Saxony.
8. The photograph was taken at the "Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing", the world's largest cemetery for Commonwealth forces from any war. The region surrounding the cemetery was fiercely contested during which important battle?

Answer: Ypres

Tyne Cot Cemetery is located outside the village of Passendale in West Flanders, near to the town of Ypres in northwestern Belgium. Here lie 11,954 Commonwealth servicemen, 8,367 of them unnamed. Three winners of the Victoria Cross are buried here, one Canadian and two Australians, who were honored for heroic deeds during the WWI Battle of Ypres.
King Albert I gave the grounds here to the British in perpetuity in recognition of the sacrifice by commonwealth troops in the defense and liberation of Belgium.
9. Many monuments in Asia are truly spectacular, and the one pictured here honoring the 15th-century king Sejong the Great is no exception. Unveiled in 2009, the bronze statue is more than 20 feet high and weighs in at over 20 tons. In which capital city can you find this spectacular monument?

Answer: Seoul, South Korea

Sejong was born in 1397 in the Korean city then known as Hansung, and now called Seoul. A member of the House of Yi of the Joseon dynasty, the third son of King Taejong, he was designated as heir apparent and became king in 1418 aged just 21.
Blinded in his latter years by diabetes, he eventually died from the disease in 1450. He is one of only two Korean rulers to be known posthumously as "the Great", the other being the 4th-century monarch, King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo.
The pictured monument to Sejong, unveiled in 2009, can be found in Gwanghwamun Square in the Jongno district of central Seoul.
10. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the 202-foot high fluted Doric column located in the City of London near to the northern end of London Bridge was completed in 1677. It is the world's tallest isolated stone column. Known today simply as "The Monument" and even marked with its own Underground station, it commemorates which event?

Answer: The Great Fire of London

Located at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill, the 202-foot high column is also 202 feet from the Pudding Lane address where the Great Fire of London began on September 2, 1666. The Portland stone column is topped with a gilded urn representing fire.
The Underground stations of Bank and Monument have been interlinked since 1933 and the complex is today one of the busiest on the network.
The Monument could have been built to commemorate two of the three alternatives offered: Charles I was executed in Whitehall in 1649 and the Royal Society was founded in 1660. The Bank of England, though, was not founded until 1694, seventeen years after The Monument was erected.
