Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which jewelry company used the slogan "A Diamond Is Forever"?

Answer: De Beers

In 1948, Frances Gerety, a copywriter for N.W. Ayer & Sons, came up with this line in her sleep. The slogan was still being used into the 21st century.
2. In the US, "It's better, not bitter" was a slogan for which product?

Answer: Carling's Ale

The Carling Brewery was established in 1818 in Canada, and began selling ale and beer in the United States in 1880. This slogan for Carling's Ale dates from 1949. More well-known is the jingle, "Mable, Black label" for Carling's Black Label Beer.
3. Which item fills in the blank: "____________, The San Francisco Treat"?

Answer: Rice-A-Roni

One of the most recognizable slogans, this one first aired on television in 1959. It helped a small business, the Golden Grain Macaroni Company, become a major one that was bought in 1986 by Quaker Oats.
4. Many years ago, when airlines served free meals on board, which US airline advertised that it had "The Best Bill Of Fare In The Air"?

Answer: TWA

TWA was a major airline from 1925 until 2001 when it filed for bankruptcy a third time and was purchased by American Airlines. "The Best Bill Of Fare In The Air" was accompanied by a picture of a Stewardess holding a tray loaded with food and drink. Other TWA ads included the line "Who Says 'It's A Man's World?'" with a picture of several well-dressed women disembarking from a TWA flight, and "Overnight OVERSEAS," with a background picture of an easily recognizable foreign landmark such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
5. "Nothing Outlasts The _________." Which battery goes in the blank?

Answer: Energizer

Since the 1980s, this slogan has been accompanied by the Energizer Bunny, a drum-beating, sunglasses wearing pink rabbit.
6. Which US brand of mustard fits best in this slogan: "Pardon Me, But Do You Have Any _____?"

Answer: Grey Poupon

This 1980s ad campaign had an aristocrat having a meal in his chauffeured limo. When the limo pulls up next to another car, he opens a window and asks this question.
7. In the 1950s television was available for and welcomed into most US homes. Of the many competing brands, which name fills in the blank in this ad: "You can't tell me about T.V. ... I've got a _______"?

Answer: Philco

Philco, a 1920s battery company, began manufacturing radios in 1928, eventually becoming the top selling brand for over 20 years. It started selling televisions in 1947 and introduced its line of Predicta sets in 1957 that featured a swivel screen with various screen sizes, wood and metal cabinets, table and floor models, and some with then-rare UHF tuners.

Unfortunately, the Predicta line was not a success, and it was discontinued in 1960. For Philco, it was as much a failure as the Edsel was for Ford (which coincidentally ran for exactly the same model years).
8. In the US, senior citizens who live alone are encouraged to get a device that will communicate with caregivers if something is amiss. Which such device used the slogan "I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up"?

Answer: Life Alert

Beginning in 1987, Life Alert used this slogan to reach oldsters who could have medical emergencies when they were alone.
9. Which US breakfast cereal used this slogan: "Hey Mikey...He Likes It!"?

Answer: Life

In 1972, this ad had three brothers having breakfast, but the older two are hesitant to try a bowl of a new cereal. Mikey, the youngest, who hates about everything, puts his spoon in and eats it all.
10. Which US brewery advertised its product as "the champagne of bottled beers"?

Answer: Miller

The Miller Brewing Company was founded in 1855 in Milwaukee by Frederick Miller. In 1903 it began marketing Miller High Life with the slogan on the label "The Champagne of Bottled Beers". Its high level of carbonation makes it quite bubbly, like champagne. (In 2015, Miller High Life uses the slogan "The Champagne of Beers.")
