Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are different types of F-15s, and this quiz concerns the F-15E Strike Eagle. The U.S. Air Force used the F-15s to replace what fleet of aircraft?

Answer: McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom ll

The primary role of the F-15E has been to provide close air support for ground troops in the Middle East. This craft was designed to play a dual role as it can also fly long range, destroy enemy ground positions, and continue fighting out of harms way.
2. The price tag on the F-15E Strike Eagle would feed and house many homeless people in the USA. When it was introduced, this aircraft was over budget and cost taxpayers how much overall?

Answer: $ 43 million

According to Air Force Daily, the number of F-15s in service in the
United States is 254 (222 in active duty and 32 in the Air National Guard).
3. In addition to the pilot, how many other crew members does it take to operate the F-15E Strike Eagle?

Answer: 1

The armament used by this craft is a 20mm multibarrel gattling style rotary cannon, 4 AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, and 4 AIM-120 AMRAAM's. It can also employ 8 AIM-120 AMRAAM's air-to-surface nuke or conventional missiles.
4. Some aircraft can have more than one primary role, and the F-15E Strike Eagle is one of these. What are the two main functions of this aircraft?

Answer: Fighter/Bomber

The wing span of this incredible weapon is 42.8 ft. or 13 meters. The length is 63.8 ft. or 19.44 meters. The height is 18.5 ft. or 5.6 meters. This thing is 5 times wider, nearly as long and 5.5 ft. taller than a tractor-trailer combination, or 'Big Truck' for you drivers. It can fly at an altitude nearly twice that of commercial airliners.
5. Pratt & Whitney is the manufacturer of the jet engines used in the F-15E Strike Eagle. A pilot can accelerate from idle power to maximum afterburner in a matter of seconds. How many?

Answer: 4 seconds

This aircraft is very capable of vertical acceleration. At sea level it can reach speeds of Mach 2.5 plus. It has an in excess range of 2400 miles or 3840 kilometers and carries a load capacity of 35,500lbs of fuel. Its weight is 37,000 lbs. empty and can carry a maximum take off load of 81,000 lbs. or 36,450 kg. Imagine enough power to accelerate something bigger and heavier than a 40 ton combination tractor-trailer at these speeds. (Big Truck for you drivers)
6. Part of the navigational ability of the F-15E Strike Eagle is achieved by GPS. What does GPS stand for?

Answer: Global Positioning System

The GPS is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Utilizing a constellation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, the system enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time.

It is also interesting to note that U.S. GPS satellites are under the control of the D.O.D. (Department of Defense) and have the ability to shut them down. So if you're lost in the woods and you are using a hand held GPS, good luck.
7. LANTIRN is an acronym for a portion of the navigation system of the F-15E Strike Eagle. What does this acronym mean?

Answer: Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infra-Red for Night

An addition to the F-15 E was a rear cockpit and the WSO (Weapons System Officer). On four screens the officer can display information from the radar, electronic warfare or infrared sensors, monitor aircraft or weapons status and possible threats, select targets, and use an electronic "moving map" to navigate. This is a piece of cake...no stress at all. The crew frequently have cakes and coffee on their breaks.
8. According to US Air Force statistics, how fast can the F-15E Strike Eagle fly?

Answer: 1903.01763 mph

At some altitudes where 1630 knots True Airspeed can be achieved (40,000+) and considering a good approximation of Mach 1 is 10 nm per minute, then 1630 knots TAS equates to: Mach 2.5 plus.

It's also questionable whether the true speed has ever been made public. What? Someone doesn't trust the government?
9. What was the name of the company responsible for manufacturing the F-15E Strike Eagle? (Remember, it's not the name of the company now).

Answer: McDonnell Douglas Corp.

The bids for this aircraft came down to three companies. One of the above got the bid. It's interesting to note that one of the men for whom this company is named was active in the occult. He preferred names for his aircraft, such as Phantom, Voodoo, Banshee, Demon, and the like. He agreed to using a bird name for the manufacture of the aircraft he and his partner had gotten the contract for. The name was that of a bird that can hunt in inclement weather.

During testing, this aircraft was stripped of it's gun, avionics, radar, tail hook, a generator and some hydraulic equipment and about 40 pounds of paint.

After climbing to a record 98,425 feet, (or 30 meters) this aircraft continued up to over 102,000 feet before falling over and starting its descent. This made it the obvious choice for delivering the ASAT anti satellite weapon.

One particular flight involved a retired P78-1 solar observatory satellite in a 345-mile (555 km) orbit which was destroyed by kinetic energy. USAF Major Wilbert D. "Doug" Pearson was the only pilot to successfully destroy a satellite in space.
10. The U.S. Air Force began having the F-15E re-manufactured or revamped in what decade?

Answer: 1980s

The aircraft body is relatively light though it is extremely strong. The wing spars (the support structures inside the wings) are made of titanium, which is lighter and stronger than steel. Most of the skin is made of lightweight aluminum. According to the Air Force, each engine can generate between 25,000 and 29,000 pounds of thrust. The normal aircraft weight is only 31,700 pounds, which means its thrust can actually be greater than its weight. Thus it accelerates quickly, even while climbing in altitude.

The aircraft also has very low wing loading, meaning it has a lot of wing area for its weight. Greater wing area means greater lift, which makes the plane more agile. It can take off, ascend and turn much more quickly than an ordinary plane, which has much more weight per square foot of wing space.
