Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The frontline fighter aircraft in the U.S. arsenal upon entry into World War II were, while not obsolete, dated designs that were inferior in some ways to their Axis counterparts. As the war progressed, newer and better aircraft were produced that outclassed their opponents and were instrumental in the Allied victory.
After the war, the U.S. remained in the forefront of aircraft design, and with conflicts such as the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War, U.S. aircraft proved themselves superior to those of most other powers.
The Spitfire and Hurricane were RAF aircraft of the Second World War. The Yak was a World War II Soviet fighter, while the Zero was a Japanese airplane from World War II. The Mirage was the name of a series of French aircraft produced from the 1950s into the 1970s. The Tornado was an aircraft built from 1979-1998 by a consortium of Britain, Italy, and Germany.
