Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is considered the father of the U.S. Navy?

Answer: John Paul Jones

Despite all his exploits, Jones was never ranked higher than captain during his service to the United States Navy. However, he was given the rank of rear admiral in the Russian Navy.
2. What day in October is considered to be the U.S. Navy's "birthday"?

Answer: 13

Interestingly enough the United States Navy is older than the United States. The Navy was established October 13th, 1775, while the United States wasn't formed until July 4, 1776.
3. This ship was where the treaty ending WWII was signed. Its hull number is BB-63 and its nickname is Mighty Mo. What is this famous ship's real name?

Answer: USS Missouri

The USS Missouri was decommissioned in 1993 and now is permanently berthed in Pearl Harbor, HI, standing silent vigil over the USS Arizona Memorial.
4. Here's a terminology question. What was a "scuttlebutt" originally?

Answer: water keg

During the days of sailing ships, water was stored in kegs also known as butts. Sailors would gather around these kegs to get a drink of water and then, much the same as now, they talked. Rumors of current events were shared here, and eventually the term scuttlebutt came to mean rumor.
5. Keelhauling is a punishment used for major offenses onboard sailing ships. A rope was looped around the ship and the accused was attached to this loop and pulled under the ship from one side to the other, resulting in injuries or even death. The US Navy has never practiced keelhauling.

Answer: true

Much like walking the plank, keelhauling is strongly connected to pirates. Although never legal in the US Navy, I have met a few scurvy dogs during my career that probably deserved it.
6. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, how many aircraft carriers were in port?

Answer: 0

This fact along with the failure of the Japanese to destroy the submarine and fuel facilities, was a major reason why the attack did little more than awaken a sleeping giant. Had they taken out any one of these objectives, the US's ability to retaliate and wage war in the Pacific theater would have been greatly reduced.
7. The USS John F Kennedy was the world's first nuclear aircraft carrier.

Answer: False

The world's first nuclear power aircraft carrier was the USS Enterprise. Although she was originally supposed to be the first of six, production costs dictated that she would be the only ship of her class. As the oldest carrier in the fleet, she is scheduled for decommissioning in 2015.
8. The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship in the world.

Answer: False

Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, is the oldest commissioned warship in the world, while the USS Constitution, commissioned 30 years later, is the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. HMS Victory sits in permanent dry dock in Portsmouth, England.
9. Admiral David Farragut uttered what famous quote?

Answer: "Damn the torpedos full speed ahead"

During the Battle of Mobile Bay, Admiral Farragut gave his famous quote. "I have not yet begun to fight," is from John Paul Jones. "Give me liberty..." is acredited to Patrick Henry and General Douglas MacArthur spoke of returning to the Phillippines during WWII.
10. Where is "Shipwreck U"?

Answer: Annapolis MD

This is one of the nicknames for the US Naval Academy. Others include Canoe U and Boat School. The academy was established in 1845 on the grounds of what used to be Fort Severn, an abandoned Army post. During the Civil war the Academy was moved to Newport, RI from 1861 - 1865.
